Hi! Welcome to Japan. My name is Shoji Kitamura, a licensed English-speaking tour guide. Please call me Shoji that is the same sound as a sliding screen made of wood and paper you may have seen in a traditional Japanese room.
I was born and raised in Yokohama next to Tokyo but lived for work in several beautiful and historical cities such as Nikko, Hiroshima, and Ise which have world heritage sites and/or national park. I fully enjoyed the nature, culture and lives in each city where I lived.
I retired after 36 years with a national research institute of fisheries in 2016.
During my career, I visited 5 continents except Antarctica, more than 20 nations for attending international scientific conferences, conducting collaborative research or teaching some technologies, etc. In Japan, I often took foreign scientists and government officers sightseeing. I had great times in these opportunities.
Such experiences made me decide to become a licensed English-speaking guide interpreter after retirement to introduce Japanese nature, culture, foods, etc. properly to many tourists coming to Japan from all over the world.
For more than 20 years I’ve been living in Nikko, which is located about 150km north of Tokyo, and designated as a World Heritage site and a National Park. If you consider a day trip from Tokyo, I strongly recommend coming to Nikko by 2-hour train ride from Tokyo. I am looking forward to showing you around in this historical and beautiful town.
Besides Nikko, I can also guide you in Yokohama, my home town, and in neighboring city such as Tokyo and Kamakura.

Our first time in Japan.. Shoji has an easy going communication style through which he provided historical information and cultural nuances about the sites we visited. Based on our food preference he took us to a wonderful resturant that enhanced our Japanese experience. Shoji provides a high quality experience.. We highly recommend his services.
Thank you very much for your kind words. I’m so glad that you enjoyed the tour with me. I had a great time with you too. Sorry we couldn’t see the parade of the Emperor. I hope you come back to Japan in another season and look forward to seeing you again.
Shoji was excellent. He was knowledgeable and and able to explain the cultural and historical significance of the sites visited . He was wonderful and caring with the two 9 year old girls with us . Shoji was a gentleman and we all enjoyed his company and valued his guidance . He was great .
Thank you, Allan and Jo for your kind words. They really encourage me. I enjoyed the time with you very much. I hope to have such pretty grandchildren soon. Thanks again for joining my Tokyo tour. I hope you will come to Japan again some time.
Shoji is a consummate tour guide. He is knowledgeable, has very good people skills, and a great sense of humor. He arranged our itinerary in such a way as to maximize our experience. In just one day, I felt that I learned a great deal about the Japanese people and the country's culture. Shoji met and exceeded our expectations as a ģuide.
Shoji is a wonderful tour guide who was not only knowledgeable about the areas of our tour, but a very kind and thoughtful guide. Shoji was able to tailor our route to accommodate my husband’s needs having some difficulties walking some steps so we were able to take public transportation to experience what it is like to ride the train in Tokyo to some of our destinations. We would highly recommend Shoji for a guide when visiting Tokyo.
Thank you so much, Audrey for your kind words. Your heartwarming words greatly encourage me. It was nice meeting you and being your guide. You and John are very good couple. I really enjoyed John’s jokes. Please say thanks to him for me. I hope you had a great time in Tokyo and also in other places you visited. Thanks again for joining my tour.
Shoji was very communicative from the time I booked the tour. I only had one free day in Tokyo, and this was exactly what I was looking for. He guided me to several sights around the city and gave interesting and insightful historical and cultural context. I really enjoyed taking the public transportation to get a glimpse of life in Tokyo. Having Shoji lead me around saved so much time and stress. I highly recommend Shoji!
Thank you very much for your kind words. I was really encouraged by your words. I had a great time with you on the tour and learned a lot from you. I hope you will be a big fun of Japan and will come again in another season. Be careful of the strong typhoon!
