Unfortunately, our cruise to Japan was canceled due to Coronavirus and we had to cancel with Richard. He was absolutely terrific during the booking process and very understanding when we had to cancel. When we get back to Japan,. will definitely schedule with him again!
Ron, Ron, Ron! OMG! You are soooooooo fortunate! Even though things may look bad at one moment, you never know! They have still not allowed the cruise ship to go anywhere and if you would have gotten on board, you would still be on it! It is all about timing and even though we could not get something scheduled this time around, I will work hard to make sure things are extra special when you return. So do not fret! You could still be on the ship! Crazy things I tell ya! Glad you had a safe trip back and I look forward to seeing you guys in the future!!!! Kind regards, Richard
Thank you Richard for a one of a kind experience, your knowledge on Japanese history, culture and everything else was fascinating and engaging. Very rarely is there a perfect combination of happy engaged parents and kids... but you did this every day. This was very much appreciated, all 4 of us look forward to meeting you again.
Thank you Kristy. Cora and Carter were awesome. I know we ran them ragged but absolutely good sports! They did really well, trying food and feeding deer!!! Love your kids. I guess I like Clay also!!! LOL. Thank you guys so much and if you do write a review on TripAdvisor please let me them know you found me here
Thank you Richard for an amazing day in Kyoto, we learned a lot. Richard is a superb guide with endless stories and jokes. He is a walking google of Japanese history and culture. We thoroughly enjoyed the day walking around Kyoto and got ourselves thoroughly immersed in Japanese culture and history. The food tour in Nishiki market was unforgettable! Grandma’s little bar tucked away in a super tiny location was the best place for sake. The tea ceremony he organized for us was really special. Highly recommended!
Thank you Girlie, I am glad you guys had a great time! Now that you have had the real Japanese 'sit down' on tatami experience, you are good! You can check that off your list!! Angela says hi and thanks you guys for coming to the Tea Ceremony! Have a safe trip home and if there is ever anything I can do for you, do not hesitate to ask!! Kind regards, Richard
As a family with young adults we wanted a tour that was both informative and fun. Having never been to Japan before we needed someone to show us the ropes. Richard was excellent. He is passionate about Japanese traditional culture and Buddhism. He also showed us how to navigate the Kyoto train system. We visited a beautiful Japanese temple and shrine with magnificent Japanese gardens. Then onto Nijo castle to see how the shoguns lived. Richard told us so many fun anecdotes about Japanese history and also gave us great advice on how to communicate with the locals. Next we visited the Nishiki markets. We had an amazing experience trying fabulous Japanese cuisine. Richard knew all the best places and foods to eat. We also made a few sake stops as well. The food was fabulous. We walked throu... read more
Thank you Sally. I am so happy you and your family had a great time with me. We got to visit a lot of places and I hope you learned a little bit about Japan that sparked your interest to come back again in the future. Hope you loved the sake and are more inclined to order it now!!! LOL. Again thank you so much and I hope you guys take care and have a great and safe trip Richard
Richard's tour was a highlight of my trip to Japan. He was kind enough to show me around Kyoto on New Year's Day, a day when many things are closed in Japan, but Richard still turned it into an enlightening and fun tour. We visited temples and shrines, but rather than just visiting them for the sake of seeing them, Richard explained the significance being each one, which really gave me a deeper appreciation for their importance. We also ate some great food along the way, drank fantastic sake, and had some great conversations. I cannot recommend Richard highly enough. If you really want to appreciate the Osaka/ Kyoto area, I highly recommend you book Richard. Thanks for a wonderful tour, Richard!
Dylan, thank you so much. Like I told you, I usually don't do tours on that day but I had a wonderful day with you and I am glad I got to start off my new year that way. I wish you so much good luck I hope you'll be able to return someday!!! Until then take care, Richard
Had a great day with Richard exploring Kyōto. We covered so much and he entertained us at each stop. The food component was a highlight 😀
YAY! Glad you had a great time and I hope you were stuffed! Please come again and have a safe trip! Kind regards, Richard
A fun filled/ educational/culturally enlightening day was had by my wife, son, and myself. Richard has a great personality, and really goes the "extra mile" to give his clients a great, unique experience, customized to any specific likes/dislikes. I truly feel that you would get so much more out of your visit with Richard than most other guides, especially if you are English speaking, due to his tremendous knowledge, but also playful and engaging way that he presents it.
Thank you Robert. I am happy that you guys had a great time despite the drizzle and I commend you on sitting at an authentic Japanese table for okonomiyaki!!! LOL!! I hope we blended the 'quite' with the crowds! Take care and let me know if there is anything else I can do for you guys!!! Kind regards Richard
Our family of five had a great time eating and drinking our way through two neighborhoods in Osaka. Richard was a master at handling our three overtired and surly children and he took us to some of the best meals we had in Japan, with the sushi approaching all time status. Make sure you come hungry and thirsty for sake along the way, with plenty of cash on hand. You will be the only foreigners in many places, and Richards Japanese is so good that the natives are in awe. He is also a wise and kind guide, who has an easy way with kids, and will tell them to get with the program in ways a parent can’t. Highly recommend!
We had a great time with Richard. He was very accommodating with our itinerary, taking us to the places we wanted to see despite how crowded they were due to the New Years holiday! Richard was very knowledgeable about the history of Kyoto which is exactly what we wanted in a tour guide. We thoroughly enjoyed the day and all the stories Richard shared with us! We would definitely recommend him! 😀
Yay! You never mentioned the sake! LOL That's why we fought through the crowds, Ha ha ha. Thank you so much for your review and if you guys ever in the future come back please let me know!!!!!!
Amazing experience thanks to Richard. He kept our teenage boys engaged with all his knowledge about the culture and history of Japan. He planned our days perfectly. And he knows his foods... thank you Richard for all the details that made our trip so much more memorable! Arigato!
Yay!!!!! I'm so happy you guys had a great time and I'm glad the boys had a great time also. If you ever get the chance to come back will go a little deeper in Japan!!!!!! Kind regards Richard
Richard has spent years living in Japan so he is very familiar with the culture and very knowledgable about the history of the sites we saw with him. He is also a very nice guy and takes great photos which he sends to you at the end of the day. All in all, we had a great day with him.
Thank you guys so much for allowing me to drag you around Kyoto. I hope you learned a little about the culture and history and please let me know if you head this way again. Kind regards, Richard
We spent just about 2 full days with Richard in Japan, traveling around Kyoto and Osaka. We travel a lot, and we always try to link up with a local to show us around properly. Richard was by far the best and most helpful guide we've ever crossed paths with. Usually these things tend to lean more towards history, or sight-seeing, or just straight food & drinks. We got it all and then some with Richard. He's American, but has lived in Japan 30+ years - so perfect English & fluent in Japanese. Most importantly, he literally knows everyone & all the best places for everything. Every single stop we made, we were greeted with big smiles, hugs, and a round of sake! It was truly the perfect combination of sight-seeing the historic landmarks, eating incredible market food (which wou... read more
Hey Melanie!!! Thank you guys sooo much! I am happy you guys had a great time. Most of the pics I took of you two, you guys had food in your presence!!! LOL I hope you got all the pics and I saw Lisa the other day, from one of the bars we went to, and she said you guys were such a sweet couple. Again, congratulations and have a great New Year!!! If you have the time to write something on TripAdvisor also, it would help so much for me, (Spirits of Japan) please let them know you found me here on TripleLights!!!! Take care and hope to see you again next year!!! HA HA You know, 1st anniversary!! LOL Kind regards, Richard
Richard met us at our cruise ship as scheduled. He designed an interesting tour for us. We had a very interesting "tasting" lunch at the market, including sake (Richard likes sake!!). We would use Richard again.
Thank you Fern, you guys were a lot of fun. Took a few trains to get there but we made it! Hope you took some greta memories home with you! Hope to see you again. Kind regards, Richard
Richard is the real deal. He is full of information, history, stories and insights. He also knows all the little, local, out of the way places that are fun to see and that most guides do not share. He also was a lot of fun and we went to seven different areas in one day! We tasted all kinds of great local foods and sake. I am really happy thst I spent the day with him. Saw so much that I would not have been able to see on my own. It is obvious that he loves Japan and he shares his passion with you. He is also a great photographer. Fabulous day. I highly recommend him as a guide and new friend in Japan.
Thank you Roxanne! I am so happy that you had a good time and it was a lot of fun covering both Kyoto and Osaka. Remember, I only take eight by tens! LOL. You were very fun and have a great sense of humor and I hope you have a safe trip home and let me know if you need anything Kind regards Richard
Our group of four spent one day and another evening with Richard. It was a great mix of culture and food and sake. We are now all sake converts! He readily accommodated all our requests and we had an awesome time. His commentary was colorful and he is spontaneous and great fun. Richard went beyond the call of duty, providing ideas for our days on our own. Thank you Richard!
Thank you! So I have successfully converted you? My plan is working! And remember sake is for sipping!!! Thank you for spending time with me and you guys were so much fun even though we almost lost you and Scott once!!! LOL Hope to see you again someday Kind regards Richard
Richard could not have been a more gracious guide on our first visit to Kyoto. He not only impressed me with his knowledge and passion of Japanese history and culture but he won the hearts of my two teenagers with his charismatic personality! We truly enjoyed seeing the beautiful autumn leaves, tasting the unique flavors of the region and learning the uniqueness of the countries culture alongside our wonderful guide, Thank you for an amazing day!!
You and your kids were amazing. They are open-minded, fun and get my jokes (most importantly) LOL. I hope you took home some great memories and please thank Fin and Emma for trying things they were not comfortable with (HA HA)!!!! A little rain at the end didn't damper our spirits either! Please be safe and if you need anything, please let me know! Kind regards, Richard
The four of us had a great 2 days with Richard and driver/van with Richard. He was fun to be with, very knowledgeable, and listened to what we wanted to do. We saw the major highlights of Kyoto and are very glad we toured with Richard.
Yay. Hey Carol. Having the driver on that other day really made the difference so that we can get around and get another place in. I am so so so happy you guys had a great time and I hope you have some awesome memories that you will not soon forget about Japan Kind regards Richard
Richard was awesome! Richard showed us all around Kyoto and after being on a guided tour with him, my kids and myself wished we planned more time in Kyoto to explore more. From visiting the Monkey Park, Bamboo forest, having lunch, visiting the market and even getting lucky to see (3) Geisha's walking around the Gian district, we sure packed a lot of things into one day. Richards knew the in's and out's of the city and train routes. He met us at our hotel on time (actually early) and in a few moments we were on the train heading to the opposite side of the city. Richard was able to answer every question my kids and I had from the city places and landmarks to the Japanese culture. It was awesome to watch him in actions when it came to interacting ******* and bumping into people ... read more
Yay!!! We were tearing up the town were we not? LOL. Thank you for booking me and entrusting me with torturing your kids! I am not sure Zach trusts me yet though... ha ha.... Please, anytime, come back and let me take you guys a little deeper. Bring the wifey next time too and take care of those babies at home! Kind regards, Richard
Richard had organised a really interesting schedule for our day. Rather than take us to the very busy main tourist sites Richard took us to some wonderful places that gave us a real feel for the old 'Imperial Japan'. We also spent an hour having a walking lunch at the Nishiki Market, what was amazing about this is he managed to get my very fussy eater brother to try most of the delicacies on offer! Richard's knowledge of both the city and history really made for a great day.
Hey Ken!!! Thank you so much for everything and I'm so happy you had a great day. I will never forget the picture I took of you guys eating Wagyu Beef at Nishiki Market!!! I hope we made some awesome memories for you guys!!!! Kind regards Richard
Charming Kyoto experienced with and thru the eyes of a guide who truly appreciates his city. We enjoyed the people, the history, and the food. Our experience included a Shogun castle, culture of the samurai, Western Kyoto, imperial Kyoto, and two geisha sightings in Gion, lunch in the market, tapas style. Transportation by subway, bullet train, and the power of walking. Truly memorable!! Aregato!!
Yay!!! You did not mention the sake, which in all reality, made this day possible. LOL I'm so happy that you remembered so many things. Thank you for understanding the long trip from the port in Osaka and I hope you guys took back some awesome memories of this part of Japan!!! Kind regards Richard
If you like a fun , food, sake during your tour Richard is for you.
Yay! Thank you Julia. I am happy you guys had a great time and thanks for getting the car on both days! We saw more than we would have! Please tell Ron, Mike & Patty they were a blast and take 'sips' when drinking sake! Ron never got me beck either!! LOL Take care and let me know if there is anything I can ever do for you. Kind regards, Richard
A great sampling of Dotonbori’s little kitchens. Friendly and inviting. Strongly recommend to all.
Nancy You guys were so much fun and if you think you had a good time last night, wait till I get you in Kyoto next week. I promise you you are going to have some great memories to take home with you
We are mum, dad and son of 23 who booked Richard for a day in Kyote. I wanted a mix of history, culture, food and drink, we had all of those packed into an entertaining day. Richard's modern take on history and culture was both light and accessible, his explanation of events and places was fun and energised. The food and drink tour of the market was great fun and my particular highlight was a vist to a small side street restaurant where an 84 year old former Geisha was now using her culinary talents as well as her intellectual ones to entertain. We loved our day and thanks for the additional retaurant tips Richard, we followed those up the day after!
Thank you Virginia for the day and I am sooooooo happy you guys had a good time. I hope I was able to convey Japan overall in one day and I thank you for allowing me to drag you around Kyoto!! Please come again to Kyoto and I hope you have safe travels until then!! Kind regards, Richard
Did not meet reasonable expectations. Would not use again.
REALLY? So, to let you know, even though the four of you seemed to have had a great time on the trip, all these years this is the second time I have received a less than five star rating, and the other one was just the other week. Both of these ratings come from people that have come off a cruise ship. Because of both of you, I will never take another cruise ship customer again Kyoto is so far from the ports. I attempt to let you know that. So whatever the case, both you and the other lady who hated walking have screwed it up for any cruise ship passenger for me in the future My recommendation to you is to stay on the ship. That is probably where you belong. In any case, I am sorry you did not have a good time but it definitely was not because of my lack of knowledge, experienc... read more
we had a wonderful, very interesting, easy going day with richard and a lot of fun. he is the best guide we imagine. he loves temples, buddhism, food and sake, as we do.
Thank you so much Daniela! I really hope you and Peter had a good time and I thank you for allowing me to drag you around Kyoto. I am also happy that you enjoyed drinking sake!!! Please let me know if there is ever anything I can do for you Kind regards Richard
Saw and did things we would not have seen on our own. If you like food, drink, and Japanese culture, Richard is your guy.
Hey Joseph. I wish I would've had you for another day. You guys are amazing and thank you very much for allowing me to drag you around Kyoto!!!!!!!!
My 28 year old daughter and I came to Japan From the US for a 6 day holiday and had many guides to choose from. Richard was an awesome guide and took us around the Kyoto area to experience Japan from a perspective different than Tokyo. His knowledge of the countrY’s history, people and culture is brilliant and has a great way to deliver the information as a story teller. You can tell guiding is his passion and it comes through every step of the way. His itinerary that he made for us was just the right amount of activity and perfectly executed. A truly good guy and a guide my daughter and I will use again!! We are going to refer friends for sure. Make your plans around this man’s availability. It’s worth it! Thank you Richard!
Thank you Damian, you and Christiana were a treat! Glad you got to finally get out of Tokyo on one of your trips, so please make sure Osaka is also on your itinerary next time! Especially for the sake!!! LOL Please be safe on your way home and if there is anything I can ever do for you, please let me know. Kind regards, Richard
Our group of four thoroughly enjoyed our time with Richard. He is knowledgeable about Japan and we saw many interesting sights in Osaka and Nara. Richard shares of himself and his background and he took good care of each member of our group. We ate and drank well, learned a lot and had a lot of laughs. We recommend Richard highly.
Hey Susan, I think you guys were laughing at me right? LOL Thank you so much for allowing me to drag you around this Kansai area of Japan (ookini). Please let me know if there is ever anything I can do for you. Kind regards, Richard
Richard was the first and only guide we have met on our multiple private tour experiences around the world who believed that because he had sent a picture of himself that he didn’t need to have a sign. He said “she knows what I look like”. The resulting inability to find our guide started our day late and was irritating to say the least. Richard is an American ex-pat who’s tour experience in Japan could be described as “extreme sport tourism”. Our time was short and we had a long way to travel from Osaka to see Kyoto, however we didn’t really have to power walk through the subway and train stations and whisk through the market so quickly. Was it partly my fault that we were so rushed? Yes. Did he listen and slow down? No. He said he couldn’t walk that slowly but would always wait for u... read more
I am so sorry that you have been the only one to not recognize me as you knew what I looked like from my video, and we got started on time anyway, as you had come down before the 12:30pm start time at the Ship. The whole misstep maybe lasted five minutes at the most as your husband went back to get you after he recognized me. All I wanted to do is get you through the itinerary you requested in the short amount of time I had to get you back to the Ship, and even though I do walk ahead, (as I lead the group), I always stop multiple times to allow everyone to catch up. I told you if you could not walk we should get a car and you did not do that. It would have been easier on all of us, though the other two people in the party that you had met on the ship and brought along, did not complain ... read more
We ( two couples) spent 3 days with Richard in Kyoto,Osaka (Food tour) and Nara . We couldn’t wish for a better guide! He is incredible! We learned and experienced so much Richard knows everything about Japan, his knowledge of Japanese history and Japanese food is encyclopedic! His amazing personality and sense of humor make you feel as if you are traveling with a friend. He is caring and eager to help with all your needs and answer all your questions We already miss him Thank you, our dear friend!
Thank you Anna. Love you guys too! It was so fun with you guys and all of you are just fun-loving people full of wonder and adventure. I do hope to see you again someday. Truly. Thank you and hope to keep in touch! Please tell Daniel and Boris and Jenny hello for me. You still have a few days in Japan, so make sure you drink more SAKE!!! LOL Kind regards Richard
What a fabulous experience we had with Richard for two days. He was very personable, extremely knowledgable and overall a very good guide. He made it feel like you were out with a friend showing us around the city. He was very mindful of what we were looking for and continued to provide advice on visits even after the two days were completed. It always felt like he was looking to provide us with what we needed and the best experience he could provide. We would highly recommend him to anyone who was looking for someone provide an in depth experience of Kyoto area. Richard & Nicky
I have no idea what you're talking about. I intentionally try to misguide you. you have foiled me again! LOL I sincerely hope you had an amazing time and I thank you for entrusting me and allowing me to drag you around. Have a safe trip home and if you need anything you let me know! Kind regards Richard
Richard’s knowledge of Japan, temples and shrines, and history and culture combined with his gregarious personality made for a truly memorable day visiting several sites in Kyoto. Richard explained and pointed out so many things that helped us appreciate what we were seeing. We three couples enjoy food. His familiarity with its vendors and foods made our time at Nishiki Market, trying many different items including sake that Richard selected, a marvellous adventure. We enjoyed experiences that would have been impossible without this guide. What a great time! Highly recommend.
Thank you Linda. Your family was a lot of fun and I hope the boys are alright with the sake drinking we did... LOL The Melon Bread stands have no chance against you guys!!! Have to make a business plan once you get back home!! Please let me know if there is ever anything else I can do for you! Kind regards, Richard
Richard is engaging, knowledgeable, flexible, and fun. His personality is icing on the cake. If we return to Japan, we will make sure we hire him for several days, not one like this time. He facilitated the best memories we’ll have from this trip.
Thank you Elena. You guys were so much fun. Please let me know what I can do for you. I will plan on seeing you guys again. Kind regards Richard
Super knowledgeable and fun. We did a 1 day tour around Kyoto and saw such a nice variety of things - castle, temple, shrine, and market. He knows it all and is so good at explaining things and sharing his knowledge. Highly, highly recommended.
Thank you guys so much!!! I am happy you had a good time and thanks for trying things I pushed in front of you. LOL If you need anything, let me know!!! Kind regards Richard
Taking my family of 5 to Kyoto for the first time, hiring Richard as our guide for two days was the best decision I could have made. We had a great combination of 'must see top 10 sites' and quieter contemplative experiences at less visited Temples and Shrines. Each member of the family will have their favourite moments, as Richard made sure to connect with each of them individually, but for me eating the best food and drink at Nishiki market and other local bars and eating places was awesome and something we could never have managed either wandering around on our own or being part of a big tour group. Even better to be welcomed into a family home for four course traditional Japanese lunch! If you're in the Kansai region, hiring Richard as your guide will be money very well spent.
Thank you Andrew for your kind words. It was very nice to be able to spend time with your amazing family and I really hope your kids take the time to come back to Japan even for a few months. It seems like all of you connected in some way to Japan and I was happy to be able to be a part of your memories. If you need anything else while you're in Japan you let me know immediately. Have a safe rest of your trip Kind regards Richard
From start to finish, the day was perfectly organized and hit all the highlights. Really felt like we saw all of Kyoto in just one day. Richard was particularly accommodating to my daughter, and included her in everything. He has a great ability to navigate Japanese culture while talking to you like an American!
Hey Christopher, hope you guys enjoyed staying up in Northern Kyoto. You guys were a lot of fun and I hope Sawyer enjoyed her trip with her dad!!! Thank you guys so much and let me know if you ever come again. Kind regards, Richard
Richard was the best. We had a 6 year old and he helped tailor the event to accommodate her. Very knowledgeable about things. He also gave logistic suggestions (e.g. ICE card). He had ideas of what to do, but was able to make on the fly changes rather easily. Make sure he takes you to the food markets. He knows the right places to eat and tries to keep the price down by picking high value food items. Even though he is anglo-American, his knowledge of Japan makes you feel he has lived in Japan all his life
Hey Jim, thank you for your kind words and the two days you booked with me. You and your family were the best. I hope Arielle takes care of those chopsticks! LOL Please tell Amy thank you and if you guys ever need assistance again, please let me know. Hope you learned a lot on my tour, hope to see you again. Kind regards, Richard
The best one day tour, Richard your communication and organisation was impeccable from the start. Thank you for showing us just how amazing Japan can be. We look forward to seeing you again in the future, thank you!
You had better come back! I want more time with you guys. Thank you for letting me drag you around and I do hope to see you guys again! If you have the time to write this on TripAdvisor and tell folks you found me here on TripleLights, I would deeply appreciate it. Kind regards Richard
What an amazing experience to have someone who could explain Japan and Kyoto from a western and eastern perspective. His knowledge from food, to history, and mysticism were a highlight of our trip to Japan. Every place and experience was better than the last. Place yourself in his hands and enjoy. We look forward to returning to explore more of Japan and Richard would have to be a part of that! Highly recommend.
You want 'more of Japan' with me??? Oh no, you will be in trouble! LOL Thank you so much for everything and I am so happy you enjoyed yourselves. I hope you guys come again and let me take care of you on your next Japan trip! Kind regards, Richard
My wife and I were visitng Japan in the very hot summer months of July/August. We had the pleasure of doing a single day tour of Kyoto and the next day a tour of Osaka with Richard. He was very knowledgeable about the history and culture of each city. Touring with Richard is like touring with a friend that you have known for years and can causually speak with. He is also someone that can show you all the local ******* that you would never venture into on your own. With Richard having lived in Japan for several decades he is familiar with the locals in each city making the tour seemless. Thank you Richard for proving us with a wonderful experience.
Thank you guys for coming and sorry for the heat. I appreciate your kindness and for allowing me to drag you around Osaka!!!! Kind regards, Richard
The tour with Richard was wonderful. We learned many new things about Japan and the culture. Our boys especially enjoyed it and bonded with Richard. He was great with kids. Thank you for a great tour.
I really do not understand why you did not leave the children with me??? I thought we had agreed I could care for them and teach them the ways of the Samurai.........LOL. Okay... maybe next time. Thank you so so much for allowing me to drag you around and show you the amazing history and culture of this amazing country. Oooooookini!! Kind regards Richard
We did multiple temples and learned deep insights into the Buddhist teaches. We had amazing food and beverages at all meals that allowed westerners to enjoy the real tastes of Kyoto and Osaka. He knows the Saki well and provided a great introduction. We learned a lot about the farmhouses, the castles, and about some of the wonderful food and shopping locations in the two cities. He was lots of fun and allowed us an opportunity to learn to cook local foods as well. We also saw the new Mitsubishi regional jet factory. Excellent guide!
Thank you so much for everything. I'm glad James found his footing in Japanese food and he was a real trooper to try everything. I hope you make it around town to all the places I showed you, let me know if we have forgotten something. I do apologize for the heat. Hope we all lost a little bit aw thank you so much for everything. I'm glad James found his footing in Japanese food and he was a real trooper to try everything. I hope you make it around town to all the places I showed you, let me know if we have forgotten something. I do apologize for the heat. Hope we all lost a little bit of weight!!! LOL
Richard is a fantastic guide. He took our family on a full-day memorable Northern Kyoto tour. His knowledge of the area, Japanese culture and most everything else is impressive. We liked him so much we added an equally memorable Osaka food tour. We highly recommend Richard!
I have no idea what you are talking about. I just followed you guys around for two days!! LOL I am happy you had a good time and thank you for letting me drag you guys around. If you do find the time to write me up on TripAdvisor as well and say you found me here on TripleLights I would be most appreciative. Anything you need, let me know and tell your friends. If they mention you Ill charge extra!!!! LOL Just kidding. Take care and again, thank you. Kind regards, Richard
My husband who was first skeptical about traveling to Japan now wants to come back. Thanks to Richard! Richard was professional, knowledgeable, but more important- FUN!!! We visited all my wish list excursions but Richard manages to include off the beaten path experiences which ended up being our favorite. We can’t thank him enough for making our trip so memorable. He’s so knowledgeable with the Japan culture- book him early because he books up fast!
Thank you Lisa, you and Steve were a hoot. Thank you for the two days and please remember that sake is always officially allowed to be drunk at 10:17am (LOL). I am glad you guys had a good time and hope to see you and any of your friends in the future. If you have time to write me up on TripAdvisor, under Spirits of Japan, I would appreciate it and let them know you found me on TripleLights. Again, thank you and if you need anything else while in Japan, please let me know. Kind regards, Richard
Thanks Richard for a really enjoyable day in Kyoto. We tried a whole lot of foods that we otherwise wouldn’t have and a real highlight was the tea ceremony. Thanks for pulling it all together at such short notice. Loved your stories.
Thank you Rachel. I really enjoyed you and your family. A lot of walking but I appreciate your perseverance and fight to pull through a semi-rainy day. Please let me know if there is every anything I can do for you in the future. Kind regards, Richard
My family (me, my wife and our 18 and 21 year old sons) spent two full days with Richard expiring Kyoto and Osaka, which was the highlight of our Japan trip. He is one of the most passionate and knowledgeable guides we have ever hired (in Japan or anywhere else). He took us to temples, shrines, forests, martial arts training centers, markets, tea ceremonies and a private lunch throughout Kyoto. Our Osaka street food/sake tour in Dotonbori is one of the most fun (and delicious) experiences we have ever had. Richard (and his wife) helped us track down and recover a lost wallet on Shinkansen, that could have really put a damper on our vacation, for which we are truly grateful. If you are looking for a guide in the Kansai region, Richard is the man!
You guys were absolutely amazing. We did do a lot didn't we? It all worked out on the wallet because we got to see Osaka at night. There's a reason for everything! I thought it was great that we got to see you again when I was with another group on a different day. You loved those Wagyu skewers didn't you guys!!! LOL Thank you for coming with me and I'm so glad you guys had a great time. Please send your friends my way! Kind regards Richard
Best -2 days ever Home made lunch at a traditional home Lots of off the beaten trail stuff and Richard has so much knowledge of Kyoto / Nara and Osaka From museums to Yakitori and karaoke Would recommend him to anyone wanting a great tour in anyone of these city’s we are big fans now of Richerd!
Thank both of you for such kind words but you guys are so appreciative of everything! You are like kids in a candy store here in Japan and I love being able to tell things that get people excited. (Sorry for walking in the mugginess, hard to concentrate when you are sweating.....LOL). Please let me know if there is ever anything I can do for you!!! Kind regards, Richard
Wow! Where to start? Richard doesn't deserve five stars...or six stars...he should get seven! We booked 2 days with him for our family group of seven people. He not only knows all of the sites in Kyoto and Osaka, but knows more Japanese history than anyone I've ever met in Japan! He was able to banter with my two teenage boys, while also keeping tabs on my mother-in-law (who is in her seventies). We visited seven cities on our recent trip and hired a guide in each city. Richard was the best of the seven guides that we hired. Everyone in my family indicated Kyoto as the highlight of our trip once we got home, with all noting that Richard made it great.
Wow! Thank you! I think I had tabs kept on me the entire time. Nothing gets past her!!! LOL Thank you so much for your review and I am glad you made it home safe. Hope the boys liked the 'culture' and it will be something they will cherish and not forget soon! Please do come again, we still have to determine who got that last piece of Wagyu!!!! LOL Kind regards, Richard
We left it to Richard to devise a slightly off the beaten track itinerary for us in Kyoto and we enjoyed several temples and shrines that were not at all crowded. He was quite a character and entertained us with some history of shinto and buddhism and the shogun era. He hosted a sake tasting which was interesting but ultimately a bit pricey.
Thank you so much for your kind words. I did try to take you to places that were off the beaten path and teach you things that you would've not learned with any other guide. I am not sure why ¥3000 per person for a premium sake tasting of sakes you will probably never get to experience again was high for you in an authentic 300 year old former Samurai residence with homemade Japanese appetizers was expensive to you but....... Six years first complaint. I do apologize. If you ever get a chance to come again we will not book that. Kind regards Richard
Richard was fantastic. He’s knowledgeable... lots of local, prefect and national history, philosophy and religion. Got along great with my 3 teenage boys. We connected and he ensured we had a good time. Certainly the best guide of our tours. Highly recommended.
Thank you guys so much!!!! Your kids are awesome and Jake still has me flustered over the countries he knows!!!! LOL I hope you enjoyed the game and got there and back easily. Please let me know if I can ever help you in the future. If you have the time to also write on TripAdvisor and tell them you found me here on TripleLights, I would deeply appreciate it. Please check out Bottle Logic Brewing and let me know how it goes. Ha Ha Ha... I know you love your beer! Kind regards, Richard
We thoroughly enjoyed our day in Kyoto with Richard. We visited fabulous sites including the Temple of the Golden Pavilion, the bamboo forest and Zen temple and the Fushimi-Inari Shrine. A highlight of our visit was a traditional Japanese lunch at a private home. Richard was very engaging, knowledgeable, entertaining and genuine. His sense of humor was contagious. We recommend him without reservations.
Richard spent a day and a half with four of us in Kyoto. We had a marvelous overview interspersed liberally with sake and tasty tidbits at the market stalls. He is knowledgeable and engaging with ready wit and an endless store of tales, more or less credible! We experienced sake tasting, a tea ceremony, evening with an apprentice geisha, a day trip to Arashiyama temple and bamboo forest. Our time there was packed with all manner of sensory stimulation not least because Richard knew where to take us and what to do in our limited time. It was also nice to be able to communicate in a language in which all of us were fluent. Great guide! Fun trip! Thanks Richard. We enjoyed ourseives.
Well I'm very happy you guys had a good time Only 4 stars? Wow. You guys laughed the entire time. Whats up with that? LOL. I will have to be on my toes when you return then so I can top that! Thanks for allowing me to pack your trip in and I hope you took home some great memories of Japan. :)
5 Stars seems wholly inadequate to rate our experience with Richard these past two days. We had an absolutely unbelievable experience. Our first day included several shrines, feeding monkeys at a monkey park up a mountain, a delicious authentic Japanese lunch at a private home and the greatest walk through a food market of my life (stopping to taste the best roasted duck, fatty tuna, sake, wagyu beef and more) and much more! Our second day was highlighted by a castle tour and a traditional Japanese tea ceremony. I have been on private tours around the world and Richard ranks among the absolute best guides I have ever had. He kept my family of five engaged and having fun the entire time. He is a consummate storyteller as well as a food and drink connoisseur which was so appreciated by a... read more
Thank you so much Todd, for the kind words. I am sorry I had to drag you everywhere and I hope my pace was not too bad. But strategically placed sake spots assisted us along the way and we were even able to avoid your 4 o'clock slump!!!! LOL You have an amazing family and I was honored to be able to take them around. If you ever need me for anything, never hesitate and let me know. Have fun in the country! I'm a little jealous. Kind regards Richard
Richard is knowledgeable, passionate and above all fun to be with. He guided us over two days with attention to detail and provided us some with memorable experiences. The food and sake we sampled with Richard was incredible, without him we would never have tried such things. He is a natural storyteller who brings history and culture to life. He is very funny and enjoys a joke. His tours are well planned without any faffing! Keep up the hard work Richard and thank you for letting us into your home. A truly unforgettable experience. See you next year, we will return for more tours and fun.
As long as we keep the Faff out, I'm good!!! LOL You guys were so much fun and I am honored to have been your guide! Awaiting your return for our next anti-Faff Tour!!
Our group of two middle aged, active couples, recently returned from Japan and three days with Richard. Unique and uniquely qualified are the words best describing our three days. Even though he is not Japanese by heritage, Richard has enough years of varied experience to fill many lifetimes. He is proficient in ALL aspects of Kyoto/Nara/Osaka life from food and beverage (saki expert), temples and shrines (he is approaching the qualifications for becoming a Buddhist monk) and just about anything else you can hope for. Almost everybody on the street knows him and his fun and convivial personality carry the day. I promise that by hiring Richard in any capacity you will get experiences of a lifetime.
You guys are not only kind but you were so fun to be with. I am glad our chance meeting turned into a few days. Thank you so much and I hope you have the chance to come back someday (and go to Osaka! LOL). Take care and see you soon! Kind regards, Richard
To walk and share time with Richard, as he shared a wealth of knowledge of the many phases of Japanese history, the Sameri culture, and religious institutions; with a pleasant sense of humor and appreciation of fine food and drink, was a memorable and delightful experience.
You are so kind Eileen. Thank you for taking the time to understand and take part in Japanese culture. Please come again someday and let me know if there is ever anything I can do for you. Kind regards, Richard
We had a full day with Richard, walking through Kyoto, as was our preference. Very informative and friendly person - Richard, who is an American with fluent Japanese, is passionate about the country and its history. Highly recommend Richard and hope to have him guide us again in Kyoto or Osaka. Joe Oxley
Thank you Joe, you and Annette were a treat. I hope you enjoyed your Samurai House visit, your time at the market and our almost out-of-the-way places, LOL. Look forward to seeing you again and if you have time to write on trip advisor and tell them you found me here on triple lights I would appreciate it
Enjoyed our day with Richard. He was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about Kyōto. Nishiki Market was a highlight where we did the food tasting. Having said that enjoyed the aqueduct, gardens and temples equally. The sake tasting was also very good! Thank you Richard for your time and expertise.
Whether he is talking about Japanese history/mythology or sake or food, Richard is a guy who really knows his stuff. And all this is interlaced with a keen sense of humour. We had a fabulous day with him and are happy to recommend him very highly.
Thank you Toni and John for a wonderful day. From the shrine to the breweries and then to the market, I hope your day was filled with liquid happiness! If you do a trip advisor for me, please let them know you found me here. If you need anything let me know!
OMG we had the best day with Richard. His knowledge of the culture and history was astonishing. His sense of humour resonated with us too. He was very professional and I cannot recommend him more highly.
Richard provided a great overview of Kyoto and shared his deep knowledge of Buddhism and history. I learned so much about how religion influenced the culture of Japan.
Hey Alvin, thanks so much for inviting me to be your Guide. I am happy you had a good time and thank you for the review! Kind regards, Richard
Thank you Richard for the wonderful time we spent together. I told you on a number of occasions that you went above my expectations and your professional duties. Most probably I wouldn't venture into some dishes on the market and sake time if I was alone so thank your your guidance. Thank you also for accommodating the needs of my 4 year old son. For all others reading this, I can just strongly recommend Richard's services as being flexible, professional, entertaining and engaging.
Entertaining and full of knowledge, my husband and I really enjoyed our touring with Richard. We left the itinerary up to him and we covered a variety of locations and experiences including a Tea Ceremony at a previous Samurai Residence, Temples, Shrines, Markets and tastings. Perfect!
Thank you Meredith. I am happy that you and Richard had a good time. It is always a delight to take people around who enjoy seeing various things. I think we had a full menu. Please do not hesitate to come again. There is much to see! Kind regards Richard
We had a wonderful day with Richard in Kyoto. We did the must see Shinto shrine. Then the day started with an exciting trip to the market. He knew all the food outlets. We ate and ate great food. Then to his Samurai House for some food and a tasting of 9 Sakes A day to remember Lawrence. Montreal
Thank you sir. Your wife and friends were a hoot! A lot of fun! I am happy you enjoyed the day. We were even able of holding off the rain for the most part! Have a safe cruise and let me know if you need anything! Kind regards, Richard
We thoroughly enjoyed our day visiting Koyasan with Richard! Knowledgable, personable, entertaining and passionate about Japan and Japanese culture, Richard is a wonderful guide. Book him soon! You will be very happy pleased!
Thank you Judy. It was a long ride, wasn't it? But we missed the rain and it turned out to be a nice day. It is always a pleasure for me to go there since my grandfather (in-law) is buried there. What an amazing cemetery and the trees!!! Thank you for letting me take you to the little Izakaya on the way home. The sake was yummy wasn't it? Again, thank you and take care. Hope to see you again! Kind regards, Richard
We did a tour with Richard to Kyoto & Richard, He was very good ,picked us on time and we as very informative on everything that we visited. We saw deer walking the street, He explained to us about Buddha religion. We had a nice lunch of noodles and also tasted sake. We finished the day with a traditional Japanese tea ceremony
Thank you Cassie. I am so happy you had a great day and I loved playing with your kids at the park while you had your Tea Ceremony. I really hope you enjoyed our 300-year-old Samurai Residence. Sorry for the low ceilings! LOL Hope to see you guys again!
Richard was amazing! All our friends enjoyed this tour and we unanimously decided it’s the highlight of our trip - and we went everywhere from Hong Kong to Taipei, shanghai, Osaka and Tokyo. Thank you Richard for not only very accommodating to changes and for giving us a great time! We saw a lot, ate well and enjoyed a lot of sake!
Way too kind! I am so happy that you got to see the Okami, Serena, at our Samurai House. I hope her dance and Japanese harp will always stay in your heart. Please let others know and let Brian know that he is much appreciated !!!
Richard was everything we could have hoped for. We were a group of 8 who were on a cruise and spent two days at Kobe Port. Richard arranged for us to see places that were significant in Japanese history and also enjoyable for us. A highlight of our day in Kyoto was the Tea Ceremony in the Samurai House hosted by the proprietors, a newly married couple. They not only did a memorable tea ceremony but because of Richard shared their special wedding sake with us. Nara was also enjoyable especially the shrine of 10000 lanterns and the deer running wild. We were also provided with information about Jaoanese culture and Buddhism throughout the trip. Richard is very knowledgeable about Japanese culture and history and we highly recommend him.
Judy, you and your group were a delight to have. You guys had a genuine interest and I was honored to have you as my guests. I am so happy you enjoyed our 300 year-old Samurai House and I am happy you enjoyed their sake. I didn't;t get any.... LOL Just kidding. Please come again and tell your friends you know a crazy American guy in Japan! Kind regards, Richard
We spent two days in Kyoto, visiting Himeji Castle and a number of shrines and temples in Kyoto. Mr. Richard is an excellent guide. His animated discussions about Buddhism, Shintoism, the political powers of Japan ensured there was never a dull moment in places which were otherwise steeped in history. My son too had a lovely time with him. His objective view of Japan and its culture were interesting.
Thank you Samhita for your kind words. I am happy you guys had a good time and I hope we did not wear mom out. I hope she had a good time as well. Please come again and tell your smart son to keep up the good work. He is amazing!
Our family of 5 with teens 16, 14 and 11 years had a great day with Richard. He was flexible, warm, knowledgeable and aimed the day correctly for teens and parents to enjoy. We highly recommend him as a guide in Kyoto.
Thank you guys! So much! Sorry for the rain, it puts a damper on things. Hope you enjoyed the Samurai House. Special day indeed. If you could take the time to write something on TripAdvisor and tell them you found me here on Triple lights, I would appreciate it deeply. Thank you again for a fun day!!!!! Kind regards Richard
Richard was well prepared, energetic and easy going. Extremely knowledgeable on local culture, particularly regarding Osaka’s Shogan past and religious events. A vast amount of information to absorb in one morning and we were greatfull that there was no exam to follow up! The food and sake destinations were just what we hoped for and his regular contacts among the small food vendors made for a great culinary experience. His recent discovery of the historical Living Village and tour of the market were highlights.
Thank you John and Sandy. I am so glad you had a good time. Thought I asked the Cruise Ship staff to leave the tests in the room...... odd..... Have a great trip and hope to see you again Kind regards, Richard
Richard met us at our hotel on time. good start. We had a marvellous day. He is so informative about all things japanese. He was very patient and caring as sometimes we were a bit slow moving. In addition we had a new guide learning, Sirena is a gorgeous person couldn't speak highly enough of her as well. We would highly recommend Richard for a tour of Kyoto. Memorable day. Thank you Richard
Richard was great. He has lots of stories, history and fun facts to share as we went on our tour...and his passion for Japan is very evident....great & fun guy , we had a really nice time and certainly recommend him to show you around Kyoto .
Thank you guys so much for coming with me on the tour and letting me drag you around Kyoto. I think you guys took my train cards, and if possible could you throw them in an envelope and send them back to me? Please come again, but next time let's make a little more time as you were pressed for time this time. Kind regards Richard
Quite a character! Full of energy, knowledge and perspective. Growing up in the states yet 20 years in Japan makes the experience even more connected and meaningful. We would recommend him highly.
Thank you sir, you and your wife were both gracious and fun to be with. Sorry to drag you around like I did but you said you liked walking! LOL. I hope you guys have a great cruise and if you need anything, please let me know! Kind regards, Richard
If I could give him 6 stars I would. From the very first correspondence with Richard via email his ideas for our 2 days in Kyoto were great and had our whole family excited for our first trip to Japan. Our first day started at noon since we had a tight 7 days schedule and were arriving from Hakone. Richard immediately took us to experience an authentic homemade Japanese lunch at a historical home in Kyoto. We visited several temples and shrines and Richard always had great knowledge of all the places we went to. A highlight of the tour for us was visiting the monkey park. The kids loved feeding them. We visited Nishki market where we enjoyed alot of wonderful foods. Richard is a wealth of information about Kyoto and the surrounding areas of Japan. He was great with 11yo boy girl t... read more
Well, Hensley and Wesley are awesome kids.... smart too. They stumped me a couple of times! Thank you for the kind review and please do come again. Much to explore! I am soooo happy you guys had a good time and I hope you savor the memories! Kind regards, Richard
He gave suggestions of places kids would like to see. He talked to them not down to them. He also gave good suggestions for foods to eat.
We contacted Richard the evening before our morning arrival. He created a tailored agenda and handled all logistics for a seamless visit to best utilize our limited time available. He was very knowledgeable of local customs and history and brought a lot of enthusiasm to our day. We all hope to come back soon and have Richard arrange an extended visit to the area.
Thank you Paul, you guys were great. Thanks for letting me take you around to get an overall view of this little city. Hope your game and party went well and if there is anything I can ever do for you, please let me know!! If you do have the chance to write on TripAdvisor for me, I would deeply appreciate it. Under Spirits of Japan. Tell them you found me here on TripleLights! YAY! Tell Matt & the girls I said hello and have a safe trip home! Kind regards, Richard
Rich was knowledgeable, entertaining and most of all welcoming. My girlfriend and I both agreed that we didn’t feel like we were with a tour guide, we felt we were visiting a friend! We both learned so much not only about the city we visited but much more regarding Japanese history and culture. The tour started off with something new which was a museum that showed the day in the life of a Japanese citizen during the Edo period. It was a great learning experience and something we both found to be fun and educational, we hope Rich continues to start his tours off this way. The tour ended exactly how we were hoping, with great food, drink and conversation. Rich was very well-informed about all the shrines and temples (shremples) we visited but our favorite part were all the hidden gems ... read more
We had a great day with Richard in Kyoto. A good selection of what you want to know about Japan: History, traditions, religion, but also some anecdotes and some food (and Saké) sampling. He understood what we were expecting and he managed to create a very entertaining day for all of us (and kept our two 12years old captivated for more than 8 hours).... and he is extremely friendly. :-) I highly recommend him as guide.
What are you talking about? Ella and Rose kept me entertained! LOL Thank you guys so much for allowing me to take you around and I am glad you had a good time. Please do not forget about me. TripAdvisor also if you have time and tell them you found me here on TripleLights! PLEASE...... I need reviews!!!! LOL HA HA. Take care and please let me know when you or your friends are headed this way! Kind regards, Richard
We decided to do the Triple Lights private tour with Richard instead of a chartered tour. This was the best decision we made. He was very knowledgeable of the places we visited and so entertaining. It was customed to what we wanted to see and we weren’t rushed to move on to the next site. Richard is very passionate about his experiences all over the world and it shows through in his tour. Everyone was so pleased with our Kyoto experience that we want to go back. I will recommend Richard to all my friends and family traveling to Osaka and it’s neighboring areas like Kobe, Kyoto, and Nara. He gets 10 stars from our group
YAY! Woohoo! Thank you guys so much, you were all such fun. Glad you also liked the Homemade Japanese Lunch! It is my pleasure to serve, especially clients like you. Please also take the time to write on TRIPADVISOR if you have time and tell them you found me on this site. I would DEEPLY appreciate it!!! Kind regards and hope to see you again, Richard
We loved every minute !
Thank you Janice!!!! Please hit TripAdvisor also when you have time and tell them you found me on TripleLights if you could! Thank you guys so much!!!! Kind regards, Richard
Could not have asked for a better guide! Knowledgable, great sense of humour, & fantastic way of imparting knowledge in an entertaining way. Loved some of your stories Richard :-). You created memories for us that will always be treasured. Long days that were in no way boring. Richard is the consummate tour guide/ story teller. Richard we lost your email for our photos. Ours is **********. Thankyou again for bringing Japan to life for us! Ian & Cathy
We spent 3 days with Richard on a wonderful adventure. Starting with a sake/foodie tour of Osaka, we found places, tasted foods, met people we would have never experienced if not for our guide. Followed by two unique days touring Osaka and Kyoto, which were hand picked for us. Richard has a great knowledge and passion for Japanese history and lifestyle. He took care of us as if we were lifelong friends. I would not hesitate to recommend Richard to anyone visiting Japan. Thank you Richard, we will always treasure our three days with you. Jan
Jan I'm sorry if you ever thought that we were going to be lifelong friends... because if you thought that, you are grossly mistaken. We are family now!!! My only desire is to take you and show you places that I would show my close friends and family. Thank you so much for entrusting me with that. And thank you dearly for trusting me with three days of your time! I will never forget you and I hope you take the time to come back and spend a little more time with me so I can show you a little more of what Japan is about Sincerely Richard
One of the best tour guides we’ve ever had. Very knowledgeable and interesting Took us to great site and was also considerate We really had a fun day
Hey Mervyn. Thank you guys so much. I'm glad you had a great time and I hope it doesn't rain too much in Tokyo. Please let me know you get my mail today and have a great rest of your trip. Richard
What can we say, Richard is truly unique and not to be forgotten! We chose Richard as we were most intrigued by a non-Japanese living in Japan for a number of years who has fully embraced the Japanese way of life with passion and respect. We chose Richard for a day trip from Kyoto to Osaka and he did not disappoint! We wanted to experience Osaka not only for its usual exciting sites that all visitors want to see, but for its wide variation of foods and local cultures that foreign visitors would not think to experience. Richard treated us to all of these things (and then some) and left us with the feeling that we truly “stepped into Osaka” if only for a brief period of time. We loved our time with him and would highly recommend Richard for any type of experience you might be seeking in ... read more
We had a great time with Richard seeing temples, bamboo forest, shopping areas and restaurants. He was very flexible to help us in many ways. Had a very clear English and good knowledge about Japanese history and culture (is married to Japanese woman, only uses Japanese clothes). We hired him with only 2 days-notice, so some of our intentions could not be included in the tour because of lack of interactions. We are referring him to other friends from Brazil. I think the TripleLights app has a lot to improve, conversation could be more friendly (requires many clicks to allow chatting), new messages are harder to be noticed (vs in ******* with a dedicated communication group), some of my messages were lost before I could send them. ******* is way better.
My Fiancé and I were in Osaka on a house hunting trip. We will be moving there shortly. We decided a personal Sake tour would be a great way to get to know some of the local spots and some of the culture around Sake. What a FUN experience. Richard was a great guy, with a in-depth knowledge about Sake and took us to some smaller out of the way establishments to do some tastings. The owners and patrons were so much fun. They made us feel welcomed and shared some of their personal stories, which we would never have experienced on our own. I would highly recommend calling Richard. We will be using him again as we have friends and family come to visit. Thank you Richard.
I'm glad you guys had a great time and I look forward to helping your friends have a great time too. If there's anything you need you let me know immediately, do not hesitate!
I rarely write reviews but I feel I have to today. My wife and I had such a fun day with Richard, and I think we both feel we made a new friend. You'll hear not only the detailed history of the sites he takes you to, but you'll also get some great stories that make the information fun. It's almost impossible to really figure out on web sites who to choose for a guide, but you'll be safe with Richard for sure! Have fun.
Thank you John, you guys were a hoot! I am happy you had a good time and thank you for hanging in there with the area we covered! I will try again upon your return with more sake samples LOL! Please take care and come again! Kind regards, Richard
I can not recommend Richard more, it was a great experience spending the day with him. As it was our first day in Kyoto and Japan he helped us to understand customs and guided us through places we could never had found ourselves.
Thank you Rebecca, you are so kind. It was a pleasure spending time with your family and please come again. We will go more local next time!! :) Kind regards, Richard
Richard provided our family with a fun and very informative tour of Kyoto. He was as accommodating and knowledgeable as a guide could be. He gets a 10.
I traveled to Japan with my 2 college age sons and had arranged 3 1/2 days with Richard to tour us in Kyoto, Osaka and Nara. The best choice I could have ever made!! We had a blast! Richard was super knowledgeable but most of all he was fun and he made us feel so welcome. It was like touring Japan with a dear friend. We made some terrific memories with Richard and can’t wait to come back to tour with him again!!! Thank you for all the memories Richard. You are the best!!! Fondly, Jill, Jared and Asher
Thank you Jill, you guys were amazing! Both Jared and Asher you can see are going to go far. Can't wait to see Asher on TV someday! LOL Wish your husband would have made it. Next time sedate hime with Sake before the flight. You are pro now! Thank you for everything and let me know if there is anything that I can ever do for you. Enjoy the Umeshu!!!! Kind regards, Richard
Richard's passion for Japan really shines through - you can feel his deep respect for the country and his insight into Japanese history and culture. Our tour took us to truly off-the-beaten paths that even some native Japanese miss out on. Our tour was a very long day (be prepared to walk and travel) but definitely well worth it. And the sake tasting definitely helped. I wholeheartedly recommend Richard for his expertise, friendliness and passion. You won't find a stronger advocate for Japan!
Thank you guys fr coming along on such a long day but to be able to see the oldest Shrine in Japan and the place where the first Emperor walked, is like you said, something most Japanese do not do. Hope you liked the Lunch also! Oh, and Sake ALWAYS helps! Thank you again and I hope to see you again. If you could take the time to write on my TripAdvisor page and let them know you found me on TripleLights, I would deeply appreciate it. https://*******/Attraction_Review-g298566-d13416350-Reviews-Spirits_of_Japan-Osaka_Osaka_Prefecture_Kinki.html
Booked a tour with Richard for our family of 4 with 2 teenage boys. He was great right off the bat engaging them and getting to know our family. We had limited time and I worked With him in advance to schedule and cram in as much history/fun/ food/culture/sake as possible. It was PERFECT!!! He really knows his stuff - from the best places to eat and drink to side streets to avoid crowds and hustle aroun the trains/subways. He really helped us to make the most of the time we had here! Just wish we had more time for him to show us more cool things! Richard was great with story telling the history in a way which engaged the boys and wasn’t boring but instead exciting and cool! Richard was great and I would Highlyyyyy recommend!! He was a highlight of our trip!
Well you know, I am still a teenager at heart! Thank you so much for your kind words and I am glad we could get most of everything in you wanted to see! Please come again and send your friends!!!! Kind regards, Richard.
Richard has great energy, apreciation for food and sake! It was a great and fun day!
We spent 4 amazing dates with Richard last month and he took us to some out-of-the-way places and had auténtic food we did not expect to have. He took us way out in the country and we discovered the oldest Shrine in all of Japan, ate Swimming Somen noodles (which we would love to bring back to New York) and just had an amazing time listening to his stories and his understanding of Japanese History, Shinto and Buddhism. We will return back hopefully next year
Richard met us at our hotel and proceeded to fill our day with fascinating stories, fabulous experiences and boundless friendship. He's knowledgeable and also well known so as you travel, you get a plethora of history, culture and good fun. He also knows the folks he speaks of and to, so there is an intimacy to the day you couldn't get on your own. Don't miss the Samurai house. What a remarkable treat.
Yay! I am so happy you had a good time! No mention of the delicious sake we had? LOL Thank you sooo much and please do come again! I wish you much good fortune for the both of you and please tell Hart it was fun talking to him. What a nice son you have! Take care.
richard is awesome!! his knowledge of kyoto is v good. we enjoy his tour throughly esp the girls. and he is good wif the gals wif his jokes and all. totally enjoyed our day wif him. will engage him again when we return
Please, please let me show you more. There is so much and your kind words and the time you let me spend with your family. THANK YOU!!!!
I had an exellent tour to Ise and Oharaemachi with Richard. We visited both the Inner and Outer Shrines and he told me a lot about Shinto and Japanese culture. His stories of Japanese mythology were really interesting. He is an energetic and knowledge guide, easy to be with. In the end of the day we had a lot of oysters, sake and fun. Thank you very much Richard.
Me and my wife travel to Kyoto for two days. Richard was a great guide. He show us the city as we were part of his most closest friend. Good things about his tour: You will know great places. He knows the best spots for food. He knows a lot!! about sake. (If you dont like Sake, he will find one you liked). You will understand some chapters about the history of the city and cultural curiosities. You will walk a lot. And finally: At the end of the tour you will have a new friend in Japan and you would like to book another tour with him. Note: if you want to live the tea ceremony experience, he can take you to a great place.
Thank you my friend. Inam so happy you chose ne as your guide and I am so happy that you loved the tour. Pkease take the time to come again. Ooookini!!!
I booked Richard based on his excellent reviews and I am pleased to say all my expectations were well and truly exceeded. Richard developed a custom itinerary for a tour of Osaka that gave my partner and I the chance to soak up a little bit of the culture while also eating and drinking like locals. It is noteworthy that locals remarked that we’d managed to visit a number of key areas of Osaka in a relatively short time. Richard is a knowledgeable, likable guide who is able to anticipate your needs and adapt the tour to give you the best experience. As someone from a western culture, he’s uniquely positioned to highlight local customs and points of difference that are particularly interesting to visitors. Richard has a wicked sense of humour and is generous with his advice about places... read more
Thank you Kieren. You are seriously going to brave another tour with me? You are indeed the one with the wicked sense of humor! Your mastery of sake tasting knows no bounds!!!! LOL I am so happy you had a good time and I look forward to our next meeting!!
