Richard was hands down the best guide we have ever had when traveling. We had only a day and a half in Osaka and wanted to see everything possible in a day. Richard created a great itinerary that included going to Koyoto and Nara for the entire day to see the main temples and shrines. He was so knowledgeable about the history of Japan and answered any questions we had. We learned so much in a matter of 13 hours that it was truly a great tour. Not only did he take us to temples and shrines, he took us to a really neat Tea ceremony. Overall, this was a great day with an incredible guide and now friend.
Richard's love of Japan and his knowledge of its culture & history make him an excellent choice as a guide. As Richard can see things from a 'local' perspective and a non-Japanese perspective, he really knows what will be interesting to visitors. Highly recommended!
Richard was very entertaining and also responsive to changes and customisation. His interests are varied and so makes for interesting conversations. A student of Buddhism, he has strong views about the topic. His passion for the preservation of Japanese culture is evident. My sons enjoy learning from him.
Excellent guide who knows yoshino. Friendly and knows the locals. Definitely recommended
Our sake tour through Namba in Osaka was the highlight of our time in Japan. For my son and nephew in particular (both in their late 20's) - it was the first time they felt like they moved from being a "tourist" to truly being enmeshed in the local culture. Richard does a phenomenal job of bridging the divide, bringing you to tiny back alley Namba bars, educating you on sake, but most importantly, allowing you to gain access to the people (from the bar owners to the patrons) in a way that you wouldn't ever experience on your own - unless of course you were both fluent in Japanese and had lived in this area for many years. (Note, I've done plenty of local private tours in Japan over the years, and this is a unique experience to gain such access!) Given that this was a Saturday night in busy Dotonbori, to say the night was lively doesn't quite do it justice:) We ended the evening in a small karaoke bar where the night moved from simply magical to riotous. Thank you Richard for an unforgettable evening.
