About

I have been an Interpretive Tour Guide for over 20 years. I have lived in Japan for nearly that amount of time broken up by a 12 years stint in Hawaii for 12 years. Still came over every month bringing tours though. I provide private, interpretive guiding services for English-speaking visitors in the Kansai region of Japan. I am a Shrine and Temple professional.

As an ex-Executive Assistant Food and Beverage Manager/Director, I know food and I know Japanese Sake and I want to show you how fun and interesting Japanese food and sake can be! My minimum is eight hours and I do not do half day tours. I promise your time with me in-depth and informative, but we will make some amazing memories while we are at it.

I also do KYOTO, NARA, ISE, as well as OSAKA.

“ Okini Richard ”

Thank you Richard for a one of a kind experience, your knowledge on Japanese history, culture and everything else was fascinating and engaging. Very rarely is there a perfect combination of happy engaged parents and kids... but you did this every day. This was very much appreciated, all 4 of us look forward to meeting you again.

Richard:

Thank you Kristy. Cora and Carter were awesome. I know we ran them ragged but absolutely good sports! They did really well, trying food and feeding deer!!! Love your kids. I guess I like Clay also!!! LOL. Thank you guys so much and if you do write a review on TripAdvisor please let me them know you found me here

“ Fantastic time in Kyoto with Richard ”

Thank you Richard for an amazing day in Kyoto, we learned a lot. Richard is a superb guide with endless stories and jokes. He is a walking google of Japanese history and culture. We thoroughly enjoyed the day walking around Kyoto and got ourselves thoroughly immersed in Japanese culture and history. The food tour in Nishiki market was unforgettable! Grandma’s little bar tucked away in a super tiny location was the best place for sake. The tea ceremony he organized for us was really special. Highly recommended!

Richard:

Thank you Girlie, I am glad you guys had a great time! Now that you have had the real Japanese 'sit down' on tatami experience, you are good! You can check that off your list!! Angela says hi and thanks you guys for coming to the Tea Ceremony! Have a safe trip home and if there is ever anything I can do for you, do not hesitate to ask!! Kind regards, Richard

“ Excellent introduction to Japan. ”

As a family with young adults we wanted a tour that was both informative and fun. Having never been to Japan before we needed someone to show us the ropes. Richard was excellent. He is passionate about Japanese traditional culture and Buddhism. He also showed us how to navigate the Kyoto train system. We visited a beautiful Japanese temple and shrine with magnificent Japanese gardens. Then onto Nijo castle to see how the shoguns lived. Richard told us so many fun anecdotes about Japanese history and also gave us great advice on how to communicate with the locals. Next we visited the Nishiki markets. We had an amazing experience trying fabulous Japanese cuisine. Richard knew all the best places and foods to eat. We also made a few sake stops as well. The food was fabulous. We walked throu... read more

Richard:

Thank you Sally. I am so happy you and your family had a great time with me. We got to visit a lot of places and I hope you learned a little bit about Japan that sparked your interest to come back again in the future. Hope you loved the sake and are more inclined to order it now!!! LOL. Again thank you so much and I hope you guys take care and have a great and safe trip Richard

“ Absolutely Wonderful ”

Richard's tour was a highlight of my trip to Japan. He was kind enough to show me around Kyoto on New Year's Day, a day when many things are closed in Japan, but Richard still turned it into an enlightening and fun tour. We visited temples and shrines, but rather than just visiting them for the sake of seeing them, Richard explained the significance being each one, which really gave me a deeper appreciation for their importance. We also ate some great food along the way, drank fantastic sake, and had some great conversations. I cannot recommend Richard highly enough. If you really want to appreciate the Osaka/ Kyoto area, I highly recommend you book Richard. Thanks for a wonderful tour, Richard!

Richard:

Dylan, thank you so much. Like I told you, I usually don't do tours on that day but I had a wonderful day with you and I am glad I got to start off my new year that way. I wish you so much good luck I hope you'll be able to return someday!!! Until then take care, Richard
