I have been an Interpretive Tour Guide for 20 years. I have lived in Japan for 17 years. I provide private and semi-private interpretive guiding services for English-speaking visitors in the Kansai region of Japan. I am a Shrine and Temple professional. As an ex-Executive Assistant Food and Beverage Manager/Director, I know food and I know Japanese Sake and I want to show you how fun and interesting Japanese food and sake can be!

My husband who was first skeptical about traveling to Japan now wants to come back. Thanks to Richard! Richard was professional, knowledgeable, but more important- FUN!!! We visited all my wish list excursions but Richard manages to include off the beaten path experiences which ended up being our favorite. We can’t thank him enough for making our trip so memorable. He’s so knowledgeable with the Japan culture- book him early because he books up fast!
Thank you Lisa, you and Steve were a hoot. Thank you for the two days and please remember that sake is always officially allowed to be drunk at 10:17am (LOL). I am glad you guys had a good time and hope to see you and any of your friends in the future. If you have time to write me up on TripAdvisor, under Spirits of Japan, I would appreciate it and let them know you found me on TripleLights. Again, thank you and if you need anything else while in Japan, please let me know. Kind regards, Richard
Thanks Richard for a really enjoyable day in Kyoto. We tried a whole lot of foods that we otherwise wouldn’t have and a real highlight was the tea ceremony. Thanks for pulling it all together at such short notice. Loved your stories.
Thank you Rachel. I really enjoyed you and your family. A lot of walking but I appreciate your perseverance and fight to pull through a semi-rainy day. Please let me know if there is every anything I can do for you in the future. Kind regards, Richard
My family (me, my wife and our 18 and 21 year old sons) spent two full days with Richard expiring Kyoto and Osaka, which was the highlight of our Japan trip. He is one of the most passionate and knowledgeable guides we have ever hired (in Japan or anywhere else). He took us to temples, shrines, forests, martial arts training centers, markets, tea ceremonies and a private lunch throughout Kyoto. Our Osaka street food/sake tour in Dotonbori is one of the most fun (and delicious) experiences we have ever had. Richard (and his wife) helped us track down and recover a lost wallet on Shinkansen, that could have really put a damper on our vacation, for which we are truly grateful. If you are looking for a guide in the Kansai region, Richard is the man!
You guys were absolutely amazing. We did do a lot didn't we? It all worked out on the wallet because we got to see Osaka at night. There's a reason for everything! I thought it was great that we got to see you again when I was with another group on a different day. You loved those Wagyu skewers didn't you guys!!! LOL Thank you for coming with me and I'm so glad you guys had a great time. Please send your friends my way! Kind regards Richard
Best -2 days ever Home made lunch at a traditional home Lots of off the beaten trail stuff and Richard has so much knowledge of Kyoto / Nara and Osaka From museums to Yakitori and karaoke Would recommend him to anyone wanting a great tour in anyone of these city’s we are big fans now of Richerd!
Thank both of you for such kind words but you guys are so appreciative of everything! You are like kids in a candy store here in Japan and I love being able to tell things that get people excited. (Sorry for walking in the mugginess, hard to concentrate when you are sweating.....LOL). Please let me know if there is ever anything I can do for you!!! Kind regards, Richard
Wow! Where to start? Richard doesn't deserve five stars...or six stars...he should get seven! We booked 2 days with him for our family group of seven people. He not only knows all of the sites in Kyoto and Osaka, but knows more Japanese history than anyone I've ever met in Japan! He was able to banter with my two teenage boys, while also keeping tabs on my mother-in-law (who is in her seventies). We visited seven cities on our recent trip and hired a guide in each city. Richard was the best of the seven guides that we hired. Everyone in my family indicated Kyoto as the highlight of our trip once we got home, with all noting that Richard made it great.
Wow! Thank you! I think I had tabs kept on me the entire time. Nothing gets past her!!! LOL Thank you so much for your review and I am glad you made it home safe. Hope the boys liked the 'culture' and it will be something they will cherish and not forget soon! Please do come again, we still have to determine who got that last piece of Wagyu!!!! LOL Kind regards, Richard
