We booked four hours in Nara with Toshi. We missed our train so we were a little late getting to our agreed connection point at the train station but Toshi was there waiting for us. I think that Toshi wanted to make sure we got to all the previously identified locations, so off we went at a pretty quick pace which was right in step with my gate but a little too fast for my wife and daughters. Toshi's command of English was good so communication was not an issue. More often we needed to ask for explanations or historical background rather than having it offered. If Toshi didn't know the information we requested she would ask someone; so we always got answers to our questions. Toshi was happy to engage in conversation of any kind.
Toshiyo was punctual. I decided to get a guide as I was travelling with 2 elderly people, one who requires a wheelchair. She was very patient. She bought tickets for places we wanted to visit and suggested lunch places. She works with you to plan the itinerary, Highly recommended.
Toshiyo was an excellent guide who took us to Arashiyama and Fushimi Inari-taisha. She provided us with the history of the sites we visited and answered all types of questions that we (4 of us) had. Having Toshiyo gave us a better insight to the people of places of Japan. She was also very helpful in clearing a misunderstanding we had about our JR pass, and saved us money in buying unnecessary tickets. Although Toshiyo is listed as a tour guide, she was just an all around very helpful person.
Our party of four (one who broke his foot 2 weeks prior to the trip) were so fortunate to have Toshiyo for 3 days in Kyoto. She is extremely professional, flexible, sensitive, and made outstanding suggestions. Considering there was one day of rain and challenges of a wheelchair/scooter, we were not able to see two areas of our pre-arranged itinerary. I consider that amazing! Her suggestion for reserving seats for the Aoi Festival and a reservation at a fantastic kaiseki lunch was spot-on. She is knowledgeable and very easy to understand. Being a local you can definitely see her passion in letting you get to see her city. When we return to Kyoto, we definitely want her as our guide! Thanks for a very memorable time in Kyoto!
Communication was haphazard prior to the trip and set off some red flags but I thought it could be due to the delayed messenger service by TripleLights but turned out that the guide did not pre-arrange the imperial palace visit application as requested. Despite exchanging phone numbers, she did not reply to my messages either. I also read one of the reviews that Toshiyo was supposedly good with older tourists but not true during my time with her; she basically walked way in front, leaving my parents far behind (as they are older and hence walked slower), leaving me to fill the gap and constantly looking out for her.
