Toshiyo did a great job taking us to two beautiful outdoor temples in the evening. We were interested in autumn color that was lit up at night. WOW! She picked two very different places, Toji Temple and 5 Story Pagoda, and then to Shoren-in Temple. The light show at Toji Temple was really spectacular, as was the line outside! She did a great job convincing us that we would get in, and she was right! So glad we didn't ask to leave when we saw the hundreds of people in a line three blocks long! She was very informative about the temple and the carvings, as well as the Imperial history, gorgeous paintings and beautifully lit garden of the Shoren-in Temple. Her English skills were excellent and we really enjoyed the evening with her.
We had a half day tour with Toshiyo, since we were coming in from Tokyo for the day and didn’t have enough time for a whole day tour. I had really wanted to see a Japanese zen garden, and Toshiyo said we would definitely see one. Unfortunately, one of our party had hurt her back a couple of days before and could only walk slowly. So, since I was unwilling to spend US$31 or so on a cab to go to a far temple, we went to nearer temples. Toshiyo willingly stayed an extra half hour to show us where to go to next and how to get there. However, even though it was only 4:10 p.m. when we got to the temple she recommended, the zen garden was already closed. So while we got to see a castle and a couple of other temples, we never got to see a zen garden.
Toshiyo shares her love for Kyoto with you through her historical descriptions and cultural stories about different sights. She is responsive to your interests and background in planning her tour.
Toshiyo was wonderful. Her English and communication were excellent and she had a lot of patience with our group of 7 which included both children and an older family member with walking difficulties. Highly recommend!
From the very start, Toshiyo was very flexible with the meeting time due to certain circumstances we had with the shinkansen. From the get go, she made adjustments to our itinerary for the day, due to the massive volume of other tourists at Kyoto at the time. This goes to show that she really did put a lot of thought into the tour that she gave us. We managed to visit all of the places I really wanted to go to even though our tour was adjusted in some way. At every place we visited she gave interesting trivia and other facts for that certain place. She was pleasent to be around with, and is a prime example of how hospitable the japanese can be.
