Nageire-do has an unbelievable scene. It is in a cave of the steep cliff near the top of Mt. Mitoku (899m). How was this building constructed 1300 years ago? It has not been completely explained yet. Visitors who could reach there after 1 hour trek would surely get divine feelings.

What to Expect

Nageire-do is in Mt. Mitoku area, Tottori prefecture. You can experience a refreshing atmosphere of the mountain worship of Buddhism. Nageire-do is said that it is the most dangerous national treasure to see among about 1000 national treasures of Japan, but it is not so dangerous with careful trek.
I show you an example of the itinerary.
Day 1
We will meet at your hotel in Osaka or Kyoto in the morning. I will take you to the station (Osaka or Kyoto) by train or taxi. We will take "Super Hakuto" (limited express train) to Kurayoshi, Tottori prefecture. It takes about 3.5 hours. We will take lunch at some restaurant in Kurayoshi city and enjoy walking the old streets of the city. We will go to Mt. Mitoku area by bus (30minutes) and stay at a pilgrim lodging which is in the precincts of the Buddhism temple. Try a vegetarian dish (dinner).
Day 2
We will enter into the mountainous area of the temple after finishing breakfast. Trekking for about 1 hour. You can explore some ancient buildings of mountain worship in the way of steep slopes. When you finally witness Nageire-do, you must be touched by its divine beauty. We will have lunch at the pilgrim lodging after returning from the trek. I will take you to the Kurayoshi Station by bus and you will take "Super Hakuto" to Osaka or Kyoto (Your guide won't take the train).

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a child experience the trek to Nageire-do?

Yes, no problem. Even an 8-year-old child can do it.

We prefer fish or meat for dinner to vegetarian dish. Is it available?

Yes. Then, we should stay at a hotel of Misasa hot spring resort. It is 10km away from Mt. Mitoku area and the accommodation fee is rather expensive (10000~20000JPY per person).

I have a tattoo on my body. Can I take a hot spring bath?

In general, a person who has a tattoo is not permitted to take a public bath in Japan. I will suggest some hotels which have rooms with a hot spring bath. I will give you one more tip. You can enjoy a free hot spring bath in Misasa hot spring resort. The bath tub is at a corner of the riverbed, and a tattoo will not bring any problem here. You may feel supreme happiness soaking in the hot spring with hearing a brook sound. But it is a mixed bathing. You may need a slight courage.

“ Very knowledgeable local guide ”

Hi Shun-San was a pleasure to work with, very detail oriented before our arrival to Japan so we had a plan of what we would be seeing. We toured Matsue Castle, walked to old town. Went to a Samarai house and had the local special soba noodles. In the afternoon we went to Adachi Museum, a spectacular place! Overall, I would highly recommend. He was prepared, had great stories and knowledge or the area, a pleasure to work with. This area shouldn’t be missed.

Hi Cori-san, thank you very much for writing a review immediately. The honor is more than I deserve. To tell the truth, I had been concerned about your response. Since the weather was bad on the day, I supposed you couldn't have felt truly satisfied. However, Shimane is one of the least-unvisited prefectures in Japan, still largely undiscovered by international tourists. I wish you would visit this area again. Thank you, Cori-san.

“ Nice day in Japan ”

Shun was a great guide with excellent knowledge of his surrounding. We appreciated his choices of what we saw. The Tea Ceramony was one of the highlights of the culture that we witnessed. Shun gave us an itinerary prior to us going so that we had some input. None of our input was required because of the great choices he made. Thank you Shun. See you on our return. GT

Thank you for your review. I am greatly honored by your words. To tell the truth, I felt worried because I had not been sure that you had really enjoyed the tour in Matsue. My recommendation for lunch, "Izumo soba noodles", were they good ? Traditional style tea ceremony, was it actually enjoyable? However, I'm jealous, you are incredibly nice family. You told me about your experiences of other travels. How interesting! I realized again that meeting people like you is one of the perks of guide. I'd love to see you again.

“ The Director of an incredible day ”

Before arriving Mr. Shun very communicative and made an effort to learn our preferences, so we could maximize our day in Kyoto. He picked up at Kobe Cruise Terminal and travel with us to Kioto. On the way he handed a printed itinerary to every person as well as a timeline with the history of Japan with the important sites that we were going to visit. Mr. Shun walks fast and was tireless, took us to the best places, told us funny stories and interesting facts about Japan culture, history and his own life in Japan. We learned a lot by using different means of transportation. We spent 10 wonderful hours with Mr. Shun. An unforgettable detail, Mr. Shun received us with a bag of Japan sweets. We recommend him 100%, and we definitely will hire him again, he also tours others cities... read more

Hi Martha, Thank you for your review . You gave me too many nice words about me. To tell the truth, I had been concerned that I might have guided you with too difficult topics. But I feel grateful now to have read your review. By the way, I tried to send you the photo we took at Kyoto, but I failed. I have no idea the reason so far. I'll try it again later if possible. Anyway if you will have a chance to visit Japan again, please contact me. Thank you again. I hope you will spend happy days in your country. Shun

“ Kyoto Customized Private Tour ”

My friend and I booked a 6 hour custom private tour to specifically visit the Sagano bamboo forest in Arashiyama, Tenryu-ji Temple, and the Fushimi Inari Shrine in Kyoto. Shun met us at our hotel and we made our way to each spot via the train. At the Sagano bamboo forest, he mentioned that there was an option to see Okochi Denjiro's (famous past silent film actor private villa. We decided to do that and the views were great! The experience also included matcha tea overlooking the bamboo forest. Overall, it was super helpful to have a professional guide navigate the way, which in turn, creates a stress free experience. I highly recommend Shun. Prior to the tour, we communicated through email and he was very accommodating. He also took great pictures for us and picked out a good lunch spot. ... read more

Thank you, Tracy, for your review. The honor is more than I deserve. To tell the truth, I couldn't get correctly what you 'd like to see in Kyoto first. But I saw soon that you were really having fun in contact with different cultures in Japan. I was a little surprised by your eagerness for taking pictures. You and your friend were particular about photo angles at Arashiyama, weren't you? I hope the days you spent in Japan would be your unforgettable memory. And I wish you'll visit Japan again. There are a lot of wonderful places, especially in the countryside in Japan. Thank you, again.

“ Customized tour to kyoto and nara ”

Our trip to osaka, kyoto and nara was made memorable by Shun-san. He was very accomodating with all our requests... from meeting us at a place in osaka so we wouldnt get lost to arranging our itinerary to fit all the places that we want to visit in kyoto and nara for 2 days. Happy and grateful to have him as our guide. We wouldnt have covered a lot of places in 2 days without him... He was also very knowlegable about the places we visited and constantly provides us with great insights on japanese culture and language... hope to get him as our guide again on our next visit to Japan. :)

Sally-san, Thank you for posting your review. I suppose you and your friends are back to your daily life working at each place in Philippines. I'm now in my hometown and remember you. There happened a lot of things during our 2-day tour in Kyoto and Nara. First, it was raining all day. I thought how unlucky we were! But, I realized soon that you had really tried to enjoy the journey and had found something beauty at Arashiyama even in the rain. I couldn’t forget the scene in Nara. You were really enjoyable playing with deer. To tell the truth, I was concerned about the schedule at that time. Do you remember? When Lawrence-san successfully passed the hole of the post at the Great Buddha Hall, people burst into applause. There were some other impressive happenings. At the end of the tour, I... read more
