Yanesen is a quite unique area in Tokyo. Because this area has escaped from major disasters like big Tokyo earthquake in 1923, it still maintains old nostalgic streets and many historical temples in quiet atmosphere. Let's explore this area with me looking for "hidden gems".

What to Expect

You will find not only impressive temples, Buddha statues and nostalgic streets but also unique crafts shops.
You can buy Japanese sweets and snacks at traditional shops.
If you want, you can try Japanese matchya green tee with an authentic tea bowl with additional fee. ( 1000 yen for one person)
You may meet street cats also.

Highlights

  • Tennouji Temple
  • Yanaka Cemetry

“ Great Hidden Gems Tour! ”

We had a fantastic experience with Mack. He is very knowledgeable, helpful and showed us some great hidden gems that we would not have otherwise seen. He created a perfect 6 hour tour including temples and shrines in Yanesen, a great ramen lunch and a tour and happy hour in the district we were staying in Kaguruzaka. I also enjoyed the historical context that Mack gave along the way, very interesting. Tokyo can be a virtual maze and you can easily miss very cool things that you could pass over many times without a knowledgeable guide like Mack. Highly recommended!

“ A Great Guide with a genuine passion to please his guests ”

Had a wonderful experience with Mack. He went all the way to ensure that we are comfortable and taken care off...his good command of English as well as advance preparation made our trip very meaningful...last minute requests were also accommodated without fail. Since we are Muslims , he ensured that we had Halal food throughout the trip. He also had huge patience considering that we had a 3 year old toddler and a 3 months baby .

“ Enlightening Japanese History ”

The tour provides an in depth information of Japanese history which was quite enlightening. We visited the Asakusa Temple, Ueno Park, Meiji Shrine, Imperial Palace and the Tokyo Metropolitan Gov't Building. It was a long tour but well worth the time and effort in 7 hours. We also experienced riding the Tokyo subway and train system which was quite an eye opener. We would be lost without Mack, our very knowledgeable guide.

“ For the Best "Hidden Gem" Tour of Tokyo -- Pick Mack! ”

Mack gave us a first class tour of Tokyo. We wanted to avoid the tourist traps. We wanted a "Hidden Gem" tour -- and we got it! Mack took us to some very unusual places. We joined a Buddhist ceremony (drums and all). We wandered through narrow streets in old neighbourhoods of Tokyo surrounded by wooden homes. We had a traditional tea ceremony in one of these homes. And -- we visited some unique artists along the way. Mack's english is very good. He studied in the US -- and has an MBA from Duke University. He was very good at answering our questions. Bottom-line -- Mack is an excellent guide. We highly recommend him.

“ Tokyo Fish markets, Toyama restaurant and Ozawa Shuzo Sake brewery ”

Really well organized tour and well timed so we could fit in everything Mack planned for the day. Mack even went to the trouble of doing a pre visit to the fish markets to ensure we could get front row for the Tuna cutting.

“ Amazing guide! ”

Mack was superb! He really likes what he does, and it shows! We were sooo lucky to have him as our guide to Tokyo! We saw so much more than we expected, traveled in bus, subway & walk to so many places in the city...all impossible to do by ourselves... he really surpassed our expectations...now we feel that we have a friend in Tokyo! Thanks Mack!

“ A fantastic day ”

Mack was recommended to us so we decided to book a day with him and we are so pleased we did. With an allergy to msg and seafood, Mack worked hard to find somewhere suitable for lunch. We had an informative day off the beaten track, seeing a side of Japan that tourists don't usually see. Mack showed us the most wonderful little eateries, shrines, temples, ancient tablets and provided us with a thorough understanding of the history of Japan. Mack is an articulate, intelligent guide and a very wonderful, authentically caring person. Thanks for a great day Mack.

“ Excellent History Tour ”

Mack is knowledgeable in the history of Tokyo. He is very accommodating. My sister walk slow and he slow the pace to the point that we were over the end time. He also pick us up at the hotel and bring us back to the station near the hotel even though I told him that it was not necessary. I will not hesitate to book him again.
