What to Expect

《You can experience Test cutting of Shizan(to be detailed later)which is most suitable for learning the Samurai spirits. Moreover, old swords produced in the 15th to 16th centuries, which are said to have excellent sharpness ever, are used!!》
Mugairyu school Iai, the classical samurai art of drawing the sword was created by the founder of Mugairyu school,
Tsuji Gettan Sukemochi(1648~1727). Mugairyu was exceedingly practical Iai to be useful for actual combat.
Additionally, considering the importance of the mental aspects of swordsmanship, Gettan joined the Zen seminary at KYUKOU-ji temple and studied under the famouse SEKITAN Zen bishop.
Incidentally, KYUKOU-ji temple near Shibuya station was founded on Azabu-Sakurada-cho in Edo(present Nishi-Azabu,Minato Ward, Tokyo)in 1650,and reportedly relocated to current location in the early 1700's.
Gettan was finally spiritually awakend with Zen Bishop Sekitan's help in the 19th year of his Zen study. For this reason, this temple is worshipped as the birthplace of "Mugai-ryu".
Gettan and his Mugai-ryu became so famous in its day. Not only samurai but also Daimyo or feudal lord joined this school. And, Mugai-ryu greatly flourished especially among high class samurai including Shogun’s retainers during the Edo Period(1603~1868).
Head Master of the school who restored the old Iai-swordsmanship style with a historical background under the school name of “Edo-Mugairyu-Iai Hyouhou” directly teaches you the Samurai spirit through Shizan(Test Cutting)modified for beginner!!
Shizan refers to the Test Cutting, which is a practice of cutting a simulated target(rolled tatami mat top layers of being soaked in water to add density) with a descending diagonal cut from the upper right to the lower left using a real Japanese sword from unsheathed position.
Shizan was popularized in the Edo Period for testing the quality of Japanese swords.
This practice requires practitioner’s concentration and courage, as might be expected of a practice performed with a real Japanese sword.
Head Master of "Edo-Mugairyu-Iai Hyoho", who is placing high value on the mental aspects of Swordsmanship like Gettan, created this Shizan experience program to provide beginners the opportunity to try Shizan and to be exposed to the samurai spirit while sufficiently giving consideration to the safety of the attempt.
And,Head Master himself spoon-feeds you considering an individual difference such as physical conditions and a physical strength!!
For example…
A towering figure…
An affectionate Madam…
A cute ten-year old boy…
A fine gentleman in his 80's…
Literally, anybody without regard to the age and gender can enjoy this Iaido lesson!! (See the video)
Success in the attempt doesn't matter, because this program's purpose lies the experience of the Samurai spirit!!
Just feel the Samurai spirit trying test cutting seriously with a real Japanese sword !!

Additionally, while commemorative photographing(dressed like a Samurai holding a Japanese sword)is of course carried out, you may also take pictures during the experience program and dojyo staff films your attempt!!
That’s why you can capture this rare and wonderful experience thoroughly!!

Furthermore, you can enjoy a kind of antique weapons collection tour during the break time!!
In addition, those are not replica but genuine ones which are supposed to be exhibited in museums!! And, unlike museums, you can film them and even touch them!!

After the lesson, amazing demonstration performed by Head Master of the school is waiting for you!!(See the video)

So, see you in the dojo!!

“ Great guy, fun tour ”

Hiroki was extremely helpful and considerate. We did the iaido lesson, and I really enjoyed it.

Hiroki:

Dear Aaron, Thank you very much for taking the "Iai-do experience tour to learn Samurai spirit" and giving me the excellent tour review!! Since the Iaido lesson includes not only how to cut a simulated target of a tatami roll with a real Japanese sword but also the appreciation of the museum piece Japanese sword and the Samurai Armours once possessed by highest ranking Samurai warriors called “Daimyo feudal lord” actually having those historic weapons in your hands, I’m sure you’re able to fully enjoy the lesson !! Thank you again, and please enjoy the rest of your stay in Japan!! Sincerely, Hiroki

“ Fake food! ”

Hiroki met us at our hotel and took us to Asakusa train station, we wanted to do a replica wax food workshop that required a guide to be with you, he arranged the booking for us and paid and organised anything, before the workshop he took us around the area and talked to us about the history and we also got to ask some of our burning questions we’d been dying to find the answer to during our trip in japan. He was lovely and insightful and knowledgeable, thank you so much Hiroki!!

Hiroki:

Dear Freya, Thank you very much for taking my private tour of Walking around Asakusa with workshop and giving me such a wonderful review !! It’s just an hour walking tour in Asakusa near the workshop venue, but your questions to the point during the tour and the wonderful replica wax food making workshop made the tour meaningful and memorable one !! Needless to say, Asakusa is the one of the best destinations being able to give you enough satisfaction, moreover, your desired workshop was more than experiencing to make replica food !! I think experiencing the traditional replica food making method (Everyday ingredient of wax turned into life-like replica food such as “Tempura” after being dipped into the hot water by putting a little ingenuity !!)greatly helped you have a real experience o... read more

“ Tokyo Cultural Tour ”

We spent a very busy, but enjoyable day with Hiroki. Before the day of our tour I corresponded with Hiroki and requested he focus on cultural highlights. Hiroki planned a full day and showed us many different areas of Tokyo. We traveled using the Tokyo's extensive subway system and he provided excellent commentary as we toured many different sites. Per our prior discussions Hiroki scheduled a special tea ceremony for us (at additional cost) which was a real highlight! He also did not miss a beat when we made a special request for lunch during the tour. It was a long day (my phone said more than 20,000 steps!), but most enjoyable. I highly recommend Hiroki as your Tokyo tour guide.

Hiroki:

Dear Mark, Thank you very much for taking my tour and giving me such a wonderful review !! During the tour I really had a great time with you and your wonderful family, too !! Also, your son’s knowledge and sincere attitude towards Japanese language and culture really impressed me !! Honestly,it’s a bit difficult to squeeze in a tea ceremony satisfying you including your son on a day trip touring Tokyo’s highlights, but I’m so glad you fully enjoyed it !! It’s a simplified half an hour tea ceremony but, the special one performed in the authentic tea-ceremony room using antique tea bowls in the antique ceramic shop with a history of over 100 years seemed to give you full satisfaction. Thank you again, and please give my best regards to your family !! Sincerely, Hiroki read more

“ Hiroki the best tour guide ”

Had an amazing time. First class service and very knowledgeable of the history of Japan. Enjoyed the tour even with the rain.......

Hiroki:

Dear James, Thank you very much for taking my private tour of Samurai Town & Narita-san Temple and giving me such a considerate review despite the tour in the bad weather !! While we had to unluckily skipp the last destination of the temple due to the rain getting heavier, it’s so good that we could visit not only the Samurai houses built in the early 19 century but also the private museum opens only a few days a week to appreciate the valuable antique Japanese swords from the early Edo Period owned by the museum. Thank you again, and please enjoy the rest of your stay in Japan !! Sincerely, Hiroki
