Tosho-gu Shrine, and another shrine and temple are on the list of World Heritage. Nikko was designated as World Cultural Heritage in 1998. In Ancient Japan, Nikko was a famous sacred training place for the "mountain worshippers." The Tosho-gu Shrine was built after the death of Tokugawa Ieyasu, founder of Tokugawa Shogunate, as his mausoleum. You can see about 5,000 colorful carvings here.

What to Expect

It is said that there are mainly two religions in Japan, Shintoism and Buddhism. Shintoism is Japan's original religion and Buddhism was introduced to Japan via Korea and China in 6th century. In Nikko you can see many structures which demonstrate the syncretism of both of them, such as the Five-story Pagoda, normally found in Buddhist temples, which was restructured in 1818 and the Stone Torii Gate, one of the biggest in Japan. Torii gate is typical of Shinto shrine.

He was very accommodating in changing our tour schedule His English was exceptable , He always seemed concerned about us , always made sure we were on train before he got on, never ran ahead. Knew answers to most of our questions at lunch asked permission before he ordered And thanked us after. I would recommend Akira for a tour in Japan We had a very enjoyable day in Tokyo

“ Delightful day with Akira ”

Akira made our visit to Tokyo very special. He was a pleasure to deal with planning the day, and was very responsive to our wants and needs. I requested a tour of the Diet Building and he arranged it so we could see inside the beautiful building and the legislative chambers. Our visit to the Fish Market was an amazing experience and Akira guided us thru an excellent lunch at a market sushi bar. He helped us understand Japanese history, gardens and culture in a very interesting and enjoyable way. I cannot recommend him more highly. Should I be lucky enough to return to Tokyo, I would definitely want Akira as my guide.

“ Wonderful custom full day Tokyo tour ”

My family of four (including our boys, ages 11 and 13) plus our two friends had the pleasure of spending a full day in Tokyo with Akira. He planned the itinerary for the day and made great suggestions. My favorite part of the day was visiting the fish market. It was handy to have Akira with us because he knew how to get into the inner market, which was the best part, and he arranged a beautiful sushi lunch for us at a quiet restaurant just outside the market. My other favorite part of the tour was Akira's trivia questions and prizes - what a brilliant way to liven up the tour. Akira's English is perfect and he was very responsive on email. Highly recommend!

“ Excellent Guide ”

We had the pleasure of Akira's company for 2 days. My family and I went to Meiji, Asakusa, Harajuku, Kamakura and more. He was very accommodating and made sure everybody was comfortable and enjoying the sights. Thank you for sharing Japans history and traditions with us. The children especially enjoyed your quizes and prizes at end of the day. Communication with him before the tour started was great. Highly recommended! Hope to see you again soon.
