The island is characterized by its natural landscape typical of the subtropical zone—a dynamic and abundant natural environment comprising near-primeval evergreen forest with numerous rare animal species unique to this island including the Iriomote wild cat.
It takes about 60 minutes from Ishigaki island to Iriomote. Between two islands lies Sekisei Lagoon, great coral reef. More than 360 species of coral have been confirmed. Their diversity is on par with the Great Barrier Reef, the world largest coral reef.
Iriomote island provides visitors with places and opportunities for high-quality nature experiences, offering a wealth of land leisure activities such as trekking canoeing mangrove river as well as marine leisure such as snorkeling.
