Overview

Let’s enjoy Nikko World Heritage. Nikko stands for one of the spiritual centers of Japanese society. The most significant place in Nikko is Toshogu. I will explain about back-ground stories. By learning these stories, you will get deep knowledge about Japanese culture. In November, you can enjoy a beautiful leaf coloring in World Heritage area.

What to Expect

In November, you can enjoy a beautiful leaf coloring in World Heritage area.
Without the historical and artistic knowledge, you cannot enjoy or learn anything from Nikko Toshogu and Nin-no ji.
I will explain (1) Tokugawa’s Political strategy (2) Shinto syncretism (3) difference of Buddhism statues (4) 17C-18C Japanese art schools (5) Yin Yan thought, (6)12 Chinese zodiac, etc.
If you are really interested in arts or architecture, let’s discuss why BRUNO TAUT, a German famous architect in 20 C, criticized Nikko’s elaborated architecture saying that "Japan's architectural arts could not rise higher than Katsura Rikyu, nor sink lower than Nikko".

Let’s enjoy wonderful nature and history together in Nikko.

“ Well prepared, resourceful, delightful guide ”

It was clear before we got to Tokyo that Mari took her work seriously and was determined to provide us with the type of tour we desired. Mari showed great versatility on subjects and an ability to quickly adapt to changing circumstances. She is fun to be with and did a great job getting us interacting with shopkeepers. Mari quickly picked up from conversations that we needed to buy train tickets to Kyoto and to use an ATM. Before our tour ended she made sure those tasks were completed. She also was great about instructing us on subway use and cultural rules. We highly recommend Mari!!

“ Narita (NRT) Layover tour ”

Mari did a great job of putting together a private 3 hour layover tour for me. She met me at the airport and in the short time we had we visited a temple, a shrine, did some shopping, sake tasting and tried some fresh eel. I would highly recommend if you have a long layover, to look her up and get out of the airport :)

“ An amazing if short visit ”

I had a 5.5 hour layover in Japan and thought it would be fun to see something of Japan that wasn't the airport. I found Mari on TripleLights and wrote her a note. She responded right away and said that 5.5 hours was plenty of time to see the small town of Narita. She was amazing! She sent me a photo of where we would meet and held a sign with my name. She had come to Narita before our meeting to find some good souvenir shops and a ramen shop. As promised, my flight landed and Mari was at our agreed upon space with her sign. She helped me put my bag in a storage locker and off we went. She was immensely knowledgeable about the temple in Narita which was wonderful. She also took me to a little shrine, the Shrine of the Fox and talked about the differences between temples and shrines. We then stopped in shops to buy the things I told her I was interested in finding, she took me back to the airport, got my bag and sent me on my way. I had an amazing time with Mari. She is very knowledgeable and easy to be around. Her English was great and her explanations of things were easy to follow. In short, she is a fantastic guide and we will definitely tour with her on our big trip to Japan. I am so glad I found her and didn't spend my layover in the airport! Thank you, Mari for a fantastic time! Michele

“ Experienced more of Tokyo with Mari than we could have on our own! ”

My wife and I were in Japan for our first time. We arranged a 4-hour tour with Mari for our first full day. Then had a needed day of rest (we walked A LOT, which we were happy to do) and then a second 4-hour tour. Mari made excellent itinerary suggestions and we were efficient but never rushed. Always informative, especially with architecture notes (my wife is an architect). Mari is very attentive and prepared and abides by your preferences (modern vs history, or both). She also has a great sense of humor! Mari is a fantastic, knowledgeable guide and definitely recommended!
