What to Expect

The deer of Nara Park is unique as they have long protected as messenger of Japanese God.
These deer acutually bow when greeting you, especially ehen deer crackers are ready to feed them.

The five-storied Pagoda and the Tokon-do of Kofuku-ji temple have been burnt down five times and the present buildings date back to the 15th centry.
Once this temple contained more than 170 buildings, but many have been reconstructed each time. This is typical example that people in Nara support Kofuku-ji temple and love it historically.

Great Buddha statue(Daibutsu) at Todai-ji temple is the largest bronze Buddha in the world. It weights approximatelly 380 tons, and the height is 15 meters tall.

Hello, I’m Makoto (Mac) Yokoyama and I'm a national-licensed tour guide.

My previous career as an automotive engineer, gave me the opportunity to learn English and to live in the US, Germany, and England. After I retired, I learned more about the Japanese history especially focusing on Nara and Kyoto to become a historical specialist of the Nara area. I now live in Ikaruga town in Nara prefecture, where the UNESCO World Heritage, Horyuji temple is located. I regularly offer guides on the Fujinoki tumulus, which is located near the Horyuji temple. It contains very interesting Archaeological findings from the end of the Kofun Period.

Recently, there are many foreign tourists who come to Japan, and I hope they enjoy learning about the culture and history of Japan. I would like to help tourists have a broader and deeper understanding of the Japanese culture and that is the reason why I decided to become a tour guide to help and support their experience in Japan.

Nara is the place where Japan started. The capital was located in Asuka, Fujiwara and Nara before it moved to Kyoto. Therefore, there are many places to visit in Nara to trace the original history of Japan, which I have a depth of knowledge.
Let’s explore the roots of Japan together!! read more

“ A great day in Kyoto ”

Our first trip to Japan was a wonderful experience! We only had one day in Kyoto, but Mac gave us his full attention and expertly guided us in our tour. He is knowledgeable, engaging, and particularly thoughtful. We would highly recommend him as a guide....thanks, Mac!

“ Fun, interesting, energetic, outstanding guide! ”

Makoto is a fantastic guide. He was funny, energetic, interesting, and spoke great English (he lived in the US for 10+ years.) We had so much fun on his tour. Makoto (actually, he goes by “Mac”) lives in Nara so he knows the area inside out. We saw so many beautiful temples and gardens that I would have completely missed if I just walked around with a Lonely Planet book. We fed the deer, marvelled at beautiful samurai swords and gigantic ceremonial drums, and even saw the piano that Einstein played when he visited Nara. Best of all, Mac shared so many aspects of everyday Japanese culture, like which pickle stores offer free samples, and where to buy recycled kimono, and why the 3, 5, and 7-year old kids were all done up in traditional dress at some of the shrines. We even got lucky and saw a traditional wedding in progress. Amazingly, he even knows where to shop! Mac said his wife trained him well, so ladies, don’t hesitate to ask for a quick whirl through some of the most interesting shops along the way. I recommend him 100%. He was worth every penny. I will definitely hire Makoto when I come back for cherry blossom season.
