What to Expect

Kamikochi (上高地) is a popular resort in the Northern Japan Alps of Nagano Prefecture, offering some of Japan's most spectacular mountain scenery. It has been preserved in its natural state within Chūbu-Sangaku National Park. It is designated as one of Japan's National Cultural Assets, on the list of Special Natural Monuments and Special Places of Scenic Beauty. It is sometimes referred to as the "Japanese Yosemite Valley," although it is considerably smaller than its Californian counterpart.

Kamikochi is a high mountain valley approximately 18 kilometers in length. The average elevation of the Kamikochi mountain valley is roughly 1,500m above sea level. It is located in the "Northern Alps" of the Japanese Alps. The surrounding mountains reach 3,000m, you can view the third highest mountain in Japan. Kamikochi is bordered on its northern end by Mount Hotaka, and on its southern end by Mount Yake, an active volcano.

There are quite a few pretty hotels and lodges to stay near Kamikochi Bus Terminal or Kappa Bridge. Some hotels have ONSEN hot springs open to public.
Mr.Weston, a British missionary first visited this wonderful mountain from Western world in mid-19th Century, and he introduced this mountain ranges as "Japan Alps" and introduced to Europe. You can find memorial monuments of Mr.Weston near bus terminal, and they also celebrate "Weston Festival" in June every year for the memorial.

Kamikochi could be good base for further mountaineering such as Mr.Yake, Mr.Hishi Hotaka, Mr.Dakesawa, etc. (It takes 7-8 hours to climb these mountains from Kamikochi bus terminal, and you need proper mountaineering or trekking gears.)

It is open from mid April to mid-November, and shuts down during winter. Accessible in about 1 hour from Takayama. It has a variety of trekking courses.
