What to Expect

The castle is located in the center of Kyoto city and designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994. It was originally built in 1603 as the official Kyoto residence of the first Tokugawa Shogun,Ieyasu. Nijo Caslte is one of the finest examples of early Edo period and Momoyama culture in Japan, as it makes splendid use of early Edo period building designs, lavish paintings, and carvings that Iemitsu generously commissioned. In 1867, when Yoshinobu, the fifteenth Tokugawa Shogun returned soverignty to the Emperor, the caslte became the property of the Imperial family. Inside Ninomaru Palace Yoshinobu summoned the coultry's feudal lords and declared that soverignty would be restored to the Emperor. There are two Japanese gardens. You can enjoy the bearutiful scenary.

“ Wonderful Night Photo Opportunies ”

Toshiyo did a great job taking us to two beautiful outdoor temples in the evening. We were interested in autumn color that was lit up at night. WOW! She picked two very different places, Toji Temple and 5 Story Pagoda, and then to Shoren-in Temple. The light show at Toji Temple was really spectacular, as was the line outside! She did a great job convincing us that we would get in, and she was right! So glad we didn't ask to leave when we saw the hundreds of people in a line three blocks long! She was very informative about the temple and the carvings, as well as the Imperial history, gorgeous paintings and beautifully lit garden of the Shoren-in Temple. Her English skills were excellent and we really enjoyed the evening with her.

“ Good tour; not enough time ”

We had a half day tour with Toshiyo, since we were coming in from Tokyo for the day and didn’t have enough time for a whole day tour. I had really wanted to see a Japanese zen garden, and Toshiyo said we would definitely see one. Unfortunately, one of our party had hurt her back a couple of days before and could only walk slowly. So, since I was unwilling to spend US$31 or so on a cab to go to a far temple, we went to nearer temples. Toshiyo willingly stayed an extra half hour to show us where to go to next and how to get there. However, even though it was only 4:10 p.m. when we got to the temple she recommended, the zen garden was already closed. So while we got to see a castle and a couple of other temples, we never got to see a zen garden.

“ We got our money's worth and then some. ”

From the very start, Toshiyo was very flexible with the meeting time due to certain circumstances we had with the shinkansen. From the get go, she made adjustments to our itinerary for the day, due to the massive volume of other tourists at Kyoto at the time. This goes to show that she really did put a lot of thought into the tour that she gave us. We managed to visit all of the places I really wanted to go to even though our tour was adjusted in some way. At every place we visited she gave interesting trivia and other facts for that certain place. She was pleasent to be around with, and is a prime example of how hospitable the japanese can be.

“ Experience Japanese Tradition and Personality ”

Toshiyos tea ceremony and calligraphy program allowed us to get to know the Japanese tradition as well as a bit of Japanese everyday life. It was a wonderful experience that we would not have gained without her and her friend. The afternoon was a special highlight of our 2 week stay in Kyoto and surroundings. If we go back to Kyoto, we will certainly book one of her other tours. She has extensive knowledge, good humor and an exceptionally sophisticated and elegant appearance. Japan at its best! We were very pleased!

“ Fantastic Tour of Kyoto ”

Toshiyo is an excellent tour guide. We learned much from her yesterday at Fushimi inari shrine, Arashiyama Bamboo forest and temple, and Kinkaki-ju. she also brought us to a nice, delicious ramen place for a hearty lunch. But the best part about Toshiyo is her service even before the day of the tour. I booked her from the Philippines, and with only our email correspondence via TripleLights, we were able to plan the day properly. she asked our preference for places, our lunch needs for the kids, and even messaged about the rainy weather. she replies at any time of day, and always pleasantly.

“ A great day in Kyoto with Toshiyo ”

We had a really good day in Kyoto with Toshiyo. She was very flexible when we changed the itinerary and very patient with my slow progress especially on the climb up the mountain to see the monkeys. After seeing the temple and gardens, and the bamboo forest in the Arashiyama area, we had lunch (Toshiyo had precooked a popular restaurant overlooking the Togetso bridge) and then went on the bus to the Gion area where we explored the fascinating streets and the temple. All in all a wonderful although exhausting day. Thank you again Toshiyo.

“ Exceeded our expectations! ”

Toshi was so very informative and relaxing to be with. Trips can be very hectic in large cities but she showed us more places than we expected and it was so much less stressful than when we visited places on our own. She gave us insight and details on the culture which we were really interested in. We had a very fun time, I would highly recommend Toshi!

“ Amazing, energetic and kind! ”

We loved getting to know Toshiyo. She is very energetic and a fast walker, which I loved. She is a hiker so can keep up with the best of them. She showed us all over Kyoto by bus and provided fast facts along the way. The restaurant we went to for lunch, owned by a tea company, was delicious. She also was a great photographer and got excellent shots of us. I would highly recommend her.

“ Kyoto Kyoto ”

Toshiyo is a terrific guide and an intelligent, lovely woman. Touring several places in Kyoto, she was knowledgeable, flexible and resourceful. We loved spending time with her and hearing about her high school year spent in Ohio. What a brace young woman! On our next trip to Kyoto, we definitely hope to see Toshiyo.

“ Wonderful help in experiencing Kyoto! ”

Toshiyo did a wonderful job helping us decide how to best share Kyoto with our family (three boys aged 6-10). Despite some significant rain/cold weather, Toshiyo helped teach us about the great history of Kyoto's temples, shared one of her favorite soba restaurants with us, and adjusted the itinerary as the day progressed to make the best of our time together. She did a wonderful job!

“ Great day with Toshiyo ”

We had a lovely time with Toshiyo. Toshiyo planned our itinerary based on what was the farthest away from our hotel and what would be the hardest to get to as tourists. We were able to see 3 sights and have lunch in a 5 hour day. Toshiyo is eru knowledgeable about the history of Japan and her English is very good. If you book with her make sure to request the Soba restaurant by the river!

“ Wonderful! ”

Toshiyo did a great job of showing us Kyoto. We covered the major sights all over the city, enjoyed a traditional soba noodle meal at one of her favorite spots, and learned to use the public transportation system. She enabled us to easily traverse the city for the rest of our stay, made recommendations for sights and places we would most enjoy, and helped us to better understand Japan and its wonderful peoples. We would definitely use her again.

“ Nijo Castle and Nishiki market. No castle proved to be a bit of a disappointment because it was quite bare and the paintings have been stripped for restoration. Nishiko market was very interesting. ”

It was a pleasure to have Toshiba as our guide for one morning. She was friendly, obliging and we could communicate well in English. She did a good job of taking us to the places we requested. I would happily have her as my guide again.

“ Wonderful Experience in Gion ”

Our family had a wonderful time in Gion with the help of Toshiyo. Our pace was just right, especially in that we were with my 75-year old mother, and Toshiyo was flexible enough to adjust the pace. We enjoyed the Kimono experience and the sushi lunch place she had reserved for us. She is able to suggest different activities apart from the usual sight seeing.
