What to Expect

This tour features both hiking and visiting a stunning, rarely visited world heritage site. Hiking in Mt. Hiei, one of the three holy mountains in Japan, will reveal to you the iconic Japanese scenic beauty of mountains and a lake. We take the same route of ancient pilgrimage and hike gently up to Enryaku-ji temple, a world heritage site. Overlooking Lake Biwa, the biggest lake in Japan, we will enjoy glorious sightseeing and come down, according to your preference, on the same or a different route or by Japan’s longest cable car. Time-permitting, we will explore the bottom of the mountain with many quaint temples and shrines. The area is often used for locations for filming. This refreshing hiking tour gives you a chance to imbibe Japan’s authentic verdant beauty and rich history.

Hello! My name is Ryoji Shimada. I am a Japanese national, professionally qualified and fluent English-speaking tour-guide for inbound tourists. Although I received my tour-guide license this year, I have been voluntarily involved in introducing Japan to non-Japanese people extensively for the past 19 years. I set up an international cultural exchange organization in 1997 where Japanese and non-Japanese can get together through diverse cultural activities such as visiting various cultural places or enjoying outdoor activities like hiking and skiing. The organization, SIEN, is still very active and I have been the head since its foundation.

SIEN received an award from the local government, in Saitama where I'm from, which is north of Tokyo. Also, I have visited all 47 provinces (prefectures) in Japan and know various excellent spots and attractions throughout Japan, especially in my old and new hometowns in and around Tokyo and Kyoto (Nara, Osaka, Wakayama and Shiga) where I currently live. It has been my greatest passion ever since my childhood to meet non-Japanese people and introduce Japan to them. I am very happy to see them enjoying Japanese culture and society and mingling with local Japanese. I like visiting historical sites and outdoor activities like hiking. Hiking is a great way to appreciate Japanese nature and scenery. I can coordinate all aspects of many unique hiking tours, outdoor tours and regular tours visiting main tourist spots.

So please contact me anytime, as I'm delighted to discuss creating tailor-made tours to fulfill your own special needs and interests at very reasonable rates. read more

“ Nice walk! ”

I ended up traveling solo so booked the evening Gion tour with Ryoji who was very knowledgeable and accommodating. It was especially nice to see the quieter areas away from all the crowds. The secret garden is just lovely.

“ A Wonderful Day in Kyoto ”

Despite the fact that we had different age gaps in our group (from a 6yr old to 84yr old), Ryoji was very patient and extremely accommodating to all of us. He took us to the most amazing sites in Kyoto, all the while telling annecdotes and histories of each place and taught us some of the Japanese culture. He made sure each of us had an awesome experience to remember, took us to the best places to eat, helped us find all the little keepsakes we wanted and made sure we got on the right train back home! Best tour ever!

“ Night tour of Gion/Kyoto area ”

We had a great time with Ryoji. His English is very good. He was very interesting and accommodating--we were late arriving from Tokyo and he patiently waited for us. Very interesting to see the city at night--especially the Gion area.

“ Kyoto Night Experience Autumn Leaves ”

Ryoji-san provided an excellent introduction to the beauty of nighttime Kyoto during the beautiful autumn leave illumination time. Ryoji customized our walk to incorporate highlights of the autumn leaves. When in Kyoto I highly recommend Ryoji to help make your visit very special.

“ Great guide in Kyoto - loved our conversations about real life ”

My wife, son (13) and I spent an evening with Ryoji in Kyoto in late October. My goal was to see the off the beaten track Kyoto and really get to know the city through a local. Ryoji met us for an evening tour, took all of our requests in and showed us some great things in Kyoto. What I/my family like the most was a dinner we had together at the end of the tour. We talked about real life in Kyoto/Tokyo/Japan and he gave us a real sense of what his life was like on a day to day level. Exactly what I wanted my 13 son to to understand. Great guy, took care of us, decent English speaker and willing to talk about real things.

I enjoyed my evening stroll through Gion with Ryoji. The route we took was very beautiful. Ryoji shared the history of the area in an engaging way. His English is excellent and he is an all round pleasant person. I would thoroughly recommend Ryoji's tour - enjoy the secret garden, the historical anecdotes, and seeing sights which by daylight are too crowded to appreciate.

Ryoji was an excellent guide! He was very articulate and patient with us (there were small children in our group). He was also very flexible and I hope we didn't confuse him too much with our indecisiveness (where and what to eat, etc.) I highly recommend Ryoji.
