Overview

Japan Open Air Folk House Museum (Nihon Minkaen) in Kawasaki celebrated its 50th anniversary last year.
It has 25 folk houses, water mills & a stage collected from all over Japan.
After approximately thirty-minute train ride and fifteen-minute walk, we could timeslip to the old days of Japan, centuries ago.
We'll also visit the free observation deck of Tokyo Metropolitan Government.

What to Expect

You can see beautiful Japanese folkhouses from the samurai period to the former century carefully preserved. Some are from the same area with Shirakawago, the World Heritage. They make you feel travelling back to the past as if we used a time machine. These houses are built without using nails.

The farming tools, weaving machines and daily utensils are also displayed, so I would explain about the Japanese culture, and answer your questions about them. Some of the houses were moved from Gokayama many years before it was acknowledged as a World Heritage. If you don't have the opportunity to visit Gokayama or Shirakawago, you can get the feel of it by visiting the houses in this museum.

After going up the hill and exiting the open-air museum, we'll walk ten minutes or so to Mt. Masugatayama, where we could view the Metropolis Tokyo.

Traveling back to Shinjuku, we will go to the observation deck of the Tokyo Metropolitan Office. During the twilight, we might be able to have a better view than daytime.

If you still have enough energy, I can walk with you to the one of the following options: 1)Samurai Museum (1900 yen, children 3-12 800 yen) , 2) the entrance of Robot Restaurant, 3)the entrance of a beautiful Japanese restaurant using a former mansion (yashiki):Reservation is desirable, so please tell me if you would like me to book it for you. They could serve vegetarian cuisines if booking three days in advance, 4) Gonpachi, the Kill Bill restaurant in Roppongi, using Subway, or 5) Shibuya crossing by eight-minute train ride.

“ Full day in Nikko ”

We (me and my 12 year old son) scheduled a full day tour of Nikko with Yoko. We could not have been happier with the service she provided. No way we could have seen everything we did or navigate the trains/buses so efficiently without her. She also provided terrific insight into the history of the area as well as provided us with a great overview of current Japanese customs and culture. She is amazing. Travel with her, you will not regret it.

Yoko:

I appreciate that you wrote such a warm and kind review. Even we couldn't see Kegon Falls that day because of the thick fog, Jack found interest in the Tamozawa Imperial Villa thanks to the bus ride. Both of you were so nice that I also enjoyed the Nikko visit very much. I hope you enjoyed Kyoto, too. I wish to show you around more places in the future. Thank you again for everything.

“ Fun and informative Day ”

Had a really fun and informative day with Yoko. We started and ended on time even with a very aggressive schedule of activities. Yoko was pleasant and had taken considerable time to pre plan the day to ensure my desired touring locations were all achieved. I would certainly recommend her.

Yoko:

Thank you so much for your review. Well, your hotel was a little too south to finish on time, but we can squeeze in many places. We visited Imperial Palace Plaza with the view of Double Bridge instead of the Imperial Palace. Please visit the Imperial Palace when you become one of the US's dignitaries some day. There are still so much places to see in Tokyo and we can also see the Great Buddha of Kamakura, so I will be waiting for you to come with your wife on vacation. BTW, the icecream flavor that we had as dessert is the same flavor that President Obama called "unforgettable.":-)

“ Day trip to Nikko ”

Yoko was great. We had a lovely rainy day in Nikko. The rain didn’t matter we still saw lots of sights and had fun. Yoko was very knowledgeable and even gave us great tips for the rest of our stay in Japan. She even sent me links to restaurants and links and directions to make sure I purchased the right train tickets. I would highly recommend her!!

Yoko:

Wow, thank you so much for writing such a sweet review on the way to Mount Fuji area!! It was raining cats and dogs but made the Kegon Falls and the Daiya River along the Kanmangafuchi Abyss much more dynamic. It was an amazing day for me to spend nearly the whole day with you and your wonderful family, Aaron, Molley and Faith, which made me feel just like ♪Singing in the Rain.♪ I wish you enjoy your stay at the Ryokan with Onsen, hot springs, and the rest of your stay. I will be dreaming of seeing you on your next visit some day.

“ The lesser visited Shrine and Temple ”

Saw a wedding. Yoko is very flexible on the itinerary. I liked the less crowded sites. Tea was very nice.

Yoko:

Thank you for your review, sir. I like Eishoji Temple, too, which is less crowded than Houkokuji Temple and also quite beautiful. You can relax and enjoy tranquility there. On some Sundays you can even have tea there, but we could see a Japanese wedding at Tsuruoka Hachimangu Shrine that Saturday. I hope you will come again and I can take you to Zen Temples. Please take care till then. Thank you again!!

“ Did and learned more with Yoko than I would have ever imagined ”

I had about a half a day extra in Tokyo and she made it a great and productive experience with lots of local insights.

Yoko:

I appreciate your great review so much. It was like a "bullet train" talk day. I will go to see "RBG" this week. I'm quite grateful you were so interested in Japanese culture and people. I had a great time talking with you, sir, and thank you so much for your generosity. I'll be looking forward to seeing you coming with your kids next time.
