What to Expect
Michelin Green Guide highly recommends 2 temples in Kamakura, Tokeiji Temple and Houkokuji Temple.
Tokeiji Temple is famous for 2 points. Firstly this temple had been known as "Divorce Temple" because they obtained the right to divorce for women from the Shogun in feudal ages. In those days women couldn't initiate a divorce, but this temple was the only sanctuary where women asked for help. Secondly this temple was the base of disseminating Zen to the world. The Abbot Shaku Soen & Dr.D T Suzuki , both were superbly bilingual, worked hard together to build a foundation for the development of Zen culture throughout the world.
Houkokuji Temple, also known as the Bamboo Temple has everything to represent Japanese culture. In this temple there are The Bamboo Garden made of 2000 bamboos, Rock garden, seasonal flowers, the Tea house and a historical Samurai cemetery. In the tea house we can have a cup of matcha tea.
This tour is only 3-hour long, but long enough to know much about Zen and Japanese culture. After the tour, just in case you want to walk around by yourself, I am happy to give you necessary information .
