What to Expect

Once the samurai capital of Japan, Kamakura is surrounded by hills on three sides and by an ocean beach on one side, which was the major reason for the first shogun Yoritomo to choose Kamakura as the site of his government. On this tour we first enjoy the beach area of Kamakura by taking a bus from Kamakura station to the extreme eastern side of Zaimokuza Beach to visit Komyoji Temple. This temple is the head temple of Jodo sect in eastern Japan, with the biggest wooden gate in Kamakura and two great ponds, one is a lotus pond where lotus floweres from 2000-year-old seeds bloom in summer, and the other is a rock garden with eight rocks representing Buddhas and great Buddhist masters. After the visit, we drop by a compound of huge tombstones belonging to the Naito family, enjoy walking of Zaimokuza Beach, where we can see Wakae-jima, the remains of the oldest man-made port which was the only international port in Japan around the 13th century, then go up along the Wakamiya-oji, the grand approach to Tsurugaoka Hachiman Shrine. At the Geba crossing, we turn left and take a bus at Rokujizo-mae to visit Great Buddha. Hase Temple, the second oldest temple in Kamakura, is several minute-walk from Great Buddha. After coming back to Kamakura station from Hase station by the Enoden Line, we'll enjoy shopping at Komachi-dori street.

“ A wonderful day in Kamakura with Eri ”

We booked 5 hours in Kamakura with Eri. We met at the train station and from start to finish enjoyed her guidance. She took us to three temples, an amazing ancient cemetary, a walk on the beach, a lovely place for lunch, a visit to a swordsmith and a walk through a lively shopping district. She provided abundant information about everywhere we went and was extremely attentive to our interests. We learned a lot and definitely saw more than we would have done on our own. It was also clear that she is well-respected as a local guide and we felt that we were privileged to be with her. If we return to this part of Japan we would absolutely try to have her as a guide again. Thank you, Eri!

Eri:

Dear Laulie, Thank you so much for such a wonderful review and so quickly at that! I'm so happy that we had a great time in Kamakura on such a beautiful day. We were very lucky to get to climb on the temple gate of Komyoji Temple, which was specially open to public at this time of the year. Not only the great ocean views from up on the balcony, but the recently repaired Buddhist statues which were colorfully painted really surprised and entertained us, didn't they? The amazing Naito family's graveyard and the beach walk with bare feet after that were also a lot of fun. You two were strong walkers and enjoying a considerrably long walk, that made me relieved so much. Seafood and a big omelet for lunch at a local restaurant and beautiful spring peonies at Hase Temple were also among many o... read more

“ Beautiful Kamakura ”

On May 29th of 2019 we (the group of 6 people from Russia and USA) booked the trip to Kamakura with Eri. Our meeting pount was at Kamakura Station. There were a lot of people as usual at the station, but we recognized Eri immediately as she was wearing beatiful kimono and desperately looking to find our group. That was so nice, elegant, unusual that we understood from the start that our tour will be great. Eri was extremely interesting narrator, she told us many interesting facts about Kamakura and Japan in general. She was willing to answer all our questions, even the stupid ones. Eri helped us to organise a very fast traditional luch as this was our requiremet in order to come back to Tokyo in time. Everyone from our group have enjoyed time with Eri and we are very thankful for her for t... read more

Eri:

Dear Yulia, Thank you so much for such a great review! It was a little chilly on our tour day, however everyone of your group was so cheerful that I felt warm inside from the moment I met you all. It was a lot of fun to help you get green tea at a shop on Komachi-dori shopping street and to explain how to make greentea in the bus on our way to Great Buddha. You were great listners! And we enjoyed this simple, hot buckwheat noodle with only chopped green onion on top, which we ordered because it was the fastest to be served at busy lunch time. And it turned out quite right to save the time. I remember many more fun moments with you during the tour. It was great meeting you all and I hope you are enjoying a nice cup of greentea! Best wishes, Eri

“ Excellent Day in Kamakura ”

Eri is a fantastic guide! She is kind, knowledgeable, and a great communicator. She was very patient and thoughtful with our 3 year old. The day was like being shown around town by a friend. We really enjoyed taking in Kamakura with Eri and highly recommend her to all!

Eri:

Dear Tom, Thank you so much for your review! I'm very happy to read it. Walking with a three-year-old kid was a lot of fun. She made everyone around her smile and she learned this Japanese word "kawaii". Yes she was "totemo kawaii", very cute and a good girl during the tour. We leisurely enjoyed our lunch time at a noodle restaurant and got to take a photo with the 24th generation sword smith at Masamune Sword and Blade Workshop. Thank you for visiting Kamakura and it was really great meeting you all! Best wishes, Eri

“ Fabulous day in Kamakura with Eri ”

We are a family of 3 who took a day tour with Eri in Kamakura. She was simply lovely and easy to communicate with. Upon arrival at the station, she was easy to find, impeccably dressed in a lovely kimono. We visited several temples as well as walking through some lovely back streets giving us an intimate view of local life. Her English was terrific and she even had handouts with her as she gave us a detailed history of all the sights. We have taken several tours all over the globe and we all agreed she was one of the best guides we have ever had. Be aware that this is a walking tour. Our Fitbit registered 6.8 miles by foot that day.

Eri:

Dear Helene, Thank you so much for your review, which was great, and I'm very happy to know that you all enjoyed the tour. The weather was perfect for a walking tour on the day, wasn't it? Although the buds of cherry trees were still stiff, we enjoyed magnolias, Japanese quince and some other seasonal floweres here and there on our way around. I was surprised and happy at a lunch reatautrant, because all of you loved a bowl of soba, buckwheat noodles so much that you finished them with big smiles. I hope this tour will be remembered as a good memory of Japan for you for long. It was really great meeting you all! Best wishes, Eri

“ Wonderful day with Eri in Kamakura ”

We had a great day with Eri in Kamakura. Not only her knowledge was so good. She share it with such a wonderful way and with so much enthusiasm and love for her country. She also was so patient with us when looking at the different shops around letting us understand what we see and what we eat. I highly recommend to Eri as Kamakura tour guide!!

Eri:

Dear Michael, Thank you so much for your review! Althouth it was only a 3.5-hour tour, we enjoyed a lot of talking while getting around the places, didn't we? You were listening to my explanation very earnestly, even taking a note sometimes, which showed your deep interest in our history and culture. It was such a fruitful time and so great meeting you two! Best wishes, Eri
