Setouchi regions, which includes the Seto Inland Sea’s islands and coastal areas, will host the Setouchi Triennale 2019, a major art fair held in three seasonal installments.
Naoshima is one of the major sites of the art fair. The island is full of art sites including “Chichu Art Museum”. In the tour, we will go around museums, outdoor works and special exhibition for the art fair.

What to Expect

First, here is the basic information about the art fair.

" 2019 Setouchi Triennale"

Session :
Spring ( Encounters) : April 26th - May 26th ( 31 days)
Summer ( Gatherings) : July 19th - Aug 25th (38 days)
Fall ( Expansions) : Sep. 28th - Nov 4th ( 38 days)
Total 108 days

The venues:
12 islands : Naoshima Teshima, Inujima, Shoudoshima, etc.
2 ports : Uno port ( Okayama prefecture) and Takamatsu port ( Kagawa Prefecture)

Participants :
184 groups (from 30 countries and regions)

191 artworks and 27 events including dance performances and plays

Second : about of the tour
“Setouchi” regions, which includes the Seto Inland Sea’s islands and coastal areas, was ranked 7th in the top 52 places to Go in 2019 of the New York Times.
That area is also on “The Cool List 2019” of British major travel magazine, National Geographic Traveller. So the area has been attracting lots of attention from the world now.

Naoshima is one of the most popular art islands of the area and full of art sites. It is impossible to visit all of them in one day. In the tour, we will visit two major museums and a couple of art-house projects, which is the same contents as the regular tour.( See the information bellow ) During the art fair, some of them will be replaced by a special exhibition or a event. Unfortunately, they have not been disclosed yet at this moment ( 2019 Jan, 20). As soon as the new information has been released, I'll put them on this site.

During the art festival, it is expected that there is a lot of congestion in each venue such as museums, cafe and shops or buses. Depending on the situation, the course of the tour may change. Whatever situation you might have, I'm sure you will be fascinated and satisfied with the outstanding harmony of nature and art at the end of the tour.

If you don't like the congestion, please choose a date other than the festival period. Even a regular course, I'm sure you will fully enjoy the unique contemporary art island, Naoshima.

The information about a regular tour course.

Art sites in Naoshima are located in three different areas, such as Museum area, Art House Project area in Honmura and Miyanoure area. First we will go to Museum area, where there are three museums. ( But we will enter the next two museums because of time limit.)

1. Chichu Art Museum: The museum was built mostly underground to avoid affecting the beautiful natural scenery of the Seto Inland sea. Art works by Claude Monet, James Turrell, and Walter De Maria are on permanent display in this building designed by the globally famous architect Tadao Ando.

2. Benesse House Museum: This museum is a facility that integrates a museum and a hotel designed by Tadao Ando, based on the concept of “coexistence of nature, art, and architecture.”

◆ There are many outdoor artworks around the Museum Area, including yellow Pumpkin by Yayoi Kusama.

Then we’ll move to Art House Project area in Honmura by the local bus, only 6-7 minute-ride. This is a project to transform old houses, which enable artists to turn the space themselves into very unique artworks. You may encounter some unexpected style of houses.

Lastly we will visit, actually come back to Miyanoura port area where the ferry arrives. You’ll find some unique huge objects around the port, such as “Red Pumpkin” by Yayoi Kusama. You can’t miss this artwork because it must be one of the best picture spots in this trip.

Though seeing around only one island, at the end of the tour, you’ll realize you need more time to enjoy and appreciate both beautiful inland-sea scenery and a number of distinctive artworks.

I'm looking forward to sharing a wonderful time with you!

“ Hiroshima one day guide ”

We met Chizuru promptly at 9.30 am in our hotel lobby. Our day was well organised and the timing of our visits to The Peace Museum and Miyajuma were not hurried. Chizuru speaks excellent English and is very knowledgeable. She went out of her way to help us buy some items in the supermarket after our trip. We thank her very much and would recommend Chizuru as a guide. J and K

Hi Kathryn, thank you for the tour review with a high evaluation. I’m very happy to receive it and glad to know that you enjoyed the tour very much. That was the most perfect day for sightseeing. It was a little cloudy day. The temperature was not so high. We enjoyed walking. And any sightseeing spots were not so crowded. Everything went so smoothly. So we could add one more spot. That is a beautiful Japanese style “Migratory garden, Shukkeien” That garden is a place to rest and relax for the people of Hiroshima. I’m glad to see you enjoy one of Hiroshima specialties, Okonomiyaki. Thank you for the wonderful time with you. Chizuru

“ One day trip to Naoshima from Kyoto on May 28th, 2019 ”

Chizuru was an excellent guide, and she did an outstanding job helping us move quickly and comfortably to and from Naoshima Island by way of the Okayama Train Station, where she met our family on the morning of our day trip from Kyoto. We are a family of three adults, and we only had one day available to see Naoshima. She sheparded us from Okayama to Uno Station, then the ferry to and from the Island. We covered the Chichu Art Museum, the Benesse House Art Collection and the Art District in Honmura. We had lunch at the cafe in the Benesse House. Chizuru was very knowledgeable about the various art collections as well as the outdoor art installations and the history of the island. Her English language skills were excellent, and her friendly and kind demeanor made the trip with her very enjo... read more

Hi Steven, thank you very much for the tour review with lots of complement. I'm happy to receive it. I had a great time with your family. Before the tour you wrote me many times to inform me of your preference and requests. That helped me make plans and look for a restaurant for dinner and so on. I was impressed by your son. He is knowledgeable about the art and artists. I felt happy when I saw your son find and be excited about some artworks by the artists he knows. I appreciate that you spent some time at “ Izakaya” in Okayama and enjoyed the special products of Okayama after the tour. They are “Sawara, Spanish mackerel” and “Hiruzen Yakisoba, noodles baked on the hot iron plate”, which won the Grand Prize in B-class gourmet competition. I believe you enjoyed the whole day in Naoshima an... read more

“ Great day in Hiroshima & Miyajima ”

Chizuru met us at our cruise port and took us to the beautiful Miyajima and then Hiroshima. There was a little confusion at the port on the ships end and she managed to adapt our schedule and we fit everything in that we wanted to see!! Chizuru was very knowledgeable and her English was excellent. It started to rain quite hard while at Peace Memorial Park and she managed to quickly show us the highlights!! Much appreciated by a few with no coats or umbrellas!!! We had a a great day!!

Hi Sandi, thank you for the tour review. I'm glad to know that you enjoyed the tour of two World Heritage sites in Hiroshima though unfortunately the weather was not so good. I was also happy to have a very enjoyable time. Thank you for sharing a wonderful time with you.

“ Great 2 days on the Art Islands ”

Chizuru did an outstanding job coordinating my 2 nights/3 day stay in Naoshima. She sent me a detailed daily itinerary with the times for the trains and ferries. I took the Shinkanzen to Okayama and then she met me and to save time hired a taxi to take us to the port of Uno. Took the ferry to Naoshima. The Benesse shuttle took my luggage to the hotel and we started touring right away. She had purchased tickets to the Chichu museum ahead of time so we lost no time. Then we did the Art House Project area. Took the shuttle back to the Museum Hotel where she went over some of the highlights and told me I could see more of it when I stayed there the 2nd night. Then we walked to the Park hotel seeing some of the art work along the way. The 2nd day we took the ferry to Teshima and had a... read more

Hi Patricia, thank you so much for your detailed tour review. That is very nice. Your review contains a lot of information about the museums in both islands Naoshima and Teshima, the art project and transportation. They will help future visitors make their tour plan. Thanks to the private transportation, we were able to use the time very effectively. Weather was nice and everything went smoothly even though the art festival is held. Thank you for a wonderful time I spent with you. I believe you are having a good time traveling around the southern part of Japan and will enjoy the northern part of Japan. Though it is still in May, but summer seems to have already started. The temperature is getting very high. Please take moisture well so as not to get heat stroke. Take care and enjoy yoursel... read more
