Setouchi regions, which includes the Seto Inland Sea’s islands and coastal areas, will host the Setouchi Triennale 2019, a major art fair held in three seasonal installments.
Naoshima is one of the major sites of the art fair. The island is full of art sites including “Chichu Art Museum”. In the tour, we will go around museums, outdoor works and special exhibition for the art fair.

What to Expect

First, here is the basic information about the art fair.

" 2019 Setouchi Triennale"

Session :
Spring ( Encounters) : April 26th - May 26th ( 31 days)
Summer ( Gatherings) : July 19th - Aug 25th (38 days)
Fall ( Expansions) : Sep. 28th - Nov 4th ( 38 days)
Total 108 days

The venues:
12 islands : Naoshima Teshima, Inujima, Shoudoshima, etc.
2 ports : Uno port ( Okayama prefecture) and Takamatsu port ( Kagawa Prefecture)

Participants :
184 groups (from 30 countries and regions)

191 artworks and 27 events including dance performances and plays

Second : about of the tour
“Setouchi” regions, which includes the Seto Inland Sea’s islands and coastal areas, was ranked 7th in the top 52 places to Go in 2019 of the New York Times.
That area is also on “The Cool List 2019” of British major travel magazine, National Geographic Traveller. So the area has been attracting lots of attention from the world now.

Naoshima is one of the most popular art islands of the area and full of art sites. It is impossible to visit all of them in one day. In the tour, we will visit two major museums and a couple of art-house projects, which is the same contents as the regular tour.( See the information bellow ) During the art fair, some of them will be replaced by a special exhibition or a event. Unfortunately, they have not been disclosed yet at this moment ( 2019 Jan, 20). As soon as the new information has been released, I'll put them on this site.

During the art festival, it is expected that there is a lot of congestion in each venue such as museums, cafe and shops or buses. Depending on the situation, the course of the tour may change. Whatever situation you might have, I'm sure you will be fascinated and satisfied with the outstanding harmony of nature and art at the end of the tour.

If you don't like the congestion, please choose a date other than the festival period. Even a regular course, I'm sure you will fully enjoy the unique contemporary art island, Naoshima.

The information about a regular tour course.

Art sites in Naoshima are located in three different areas, such as Museum area, Art House Project area in Honmura and Miyanoure area. First we will go to Museum area, where there are three museums. ( But we will enter the next two museums because of time limit.)

1. Chichu Art Museum: The museum was built mostly underground to avoid affecting the beautiful natural scenery of the Seto Inland sea. Art works by Claude Monet, James Turrell, and Walter De Maria are on permanent display in this building designed by the globally famous architect Tadao Ando.

2. Benesse House Museum: This museum is a facility that integrates a museum and a hotel designed by Tadao Ando, based on the concept of “coexistence of nature, art, and architecture.”

◆ There are many outdoor artworks around the Museum Area, including yellow Pumpkin by Yayoi Kusama.

Then we’ll move to Art House Project area in Honmura by the local bus, only 6-7 minute-ride. This is a project to transform old houses, which enable artists to turn the space themselves into very unique artworks. You may encounter some unexpected style of houses.

Lastly we will visit, actually come back to Miyanoura port area where the ferry arrives. You’ll find some unique huge objects around the port, such as “Red Pumpkin” by Yayoi Kusama. You can’t miss this artwork because it must be one of the best picture spots in this trip.

Though seeing around only one island, at the end of the tour, you’ll realize you need more time to enjoy and appreciate both beautiful inland-sea scenery and a number of distinctive artworks.

I'm looking forward to sharing a wonderful time with you!

“ Fantastic lady and a great guide ”

I had a small group of 7 people, all well travelled and looking for satisfaction in every aspect on a visit to Hiroshima where Chizuro San led us beautifully. Her personality as well as her knowledge of the area was amazing. She very kindly helped me with advance hotel arrangements which need a change I could not manage myself. I just wish she could have led us on the complete trip of Japan.

Hi Kevin, thank you for the tour review with the high evaluation and lots of complements. I appreciate it. I'm glad I could help Judy find the portrait and the profile of her friend’s sister who past away as a result of Atomic bombing at the research library in “Hiroshima National Peace Memorial Hall for the Atomic Bomb Victims”. During lunch time, we enjoyed “Okonomiyaki”, most popular local food in Hiroshima, at the Teppan-Yaki restaurant which the taxi driver recommended. I ate Okonomiyaki many times so far, but the Okonomiyaki in that restaurant was the number one!!!

“ Chizuru is a wonderful guide, who worked tirelessly both before and during the tour to enhance our experiences ”

Chizuru spent a lot of time before our tour trying to find and organize some specific requests we had for our special hobby interests. Chizuru knows how to fade into the background when you are happily occupied ,but to step forward immediately when you have need for her. She was very solicitous of my bad knee, always pointing out a ramp, elevator, to aid me. Finally, Chizuru is friendly and charming to be with. Her English speaking ability is good, you will be able to understand her. I highly recommend Chizuru, the time you spend with her will be one of the highlights of your Japanese trip

Hi Richard, thank you so much for your review with a high evaluation and lots of complements. I’m very happy to hear that you enjoyed the tour. You will be one of my forgettable customers because of a huge number of e-mails we exchanged, more than 50 times. What I’m most sorry to say is that I couldn’t make one of your wishes come true, MT factory tour. I wonder how many or much “Japanese paper and Washi tape” Zia bought. I hope she will make a lot of wonderful works by using them.

“ Great tour ”

We had a great tour with Chizuru. She was very knowledgeable about where to go, how to get there and what we saw. The tour was a highlight of our trip. Thank you.

Hi JD, thank you very much for your quick review with the high evaluation for the tour. It was Sunday and in the middle of Spring break of Japanese school students. I was worried that the museums would be very crowded. But fortunately, we could see paintings and experience unique art projects without waiting for a long time. The tour went very smoothly. Thank you for your cooperation and I appreciate the wonderful time you shared with me. Thank you JD & Damon

“ A day to reflect on history ”

Chizuru was a great guide and I would recommend her. She met us at the train station and walked us to our hotel to drop off our luggage, which was very nice and helpful. Chizuru was very informative and navigated our way through several locations very easily. Chizuru explained the history of the bombing and gave us historical facts all throughout the bomb site, museum and children's monument. It was a good experience to reflect on the history of nuclear war. Next we went to Miyajima which was also excellent. I would highly recommend visiting both sites in the same day. We did NOT feel rushed, and it was a great day. Thank you Chizuru!!!

Dear Karen, Thank you very much for your highly evaluation with a lot of complement. I'm very happy to receive it. Though the starting time was a little late, everything went well including the weather. I'm very glad to meet a nice family like you. I appreciate that I could have a pleasant time with you. Thank you Karen!
