Overview

Genbi-kei Gorge's rocky landscape was shaped by the erosion of the river throughout the years. The beautiful scenery of the changing seasons has been listed as a National Site of Scenic Beauty and a Natural Monument.

When we visit the grounds of Takkoku-no-Iwaya, you can see the Buddhist relief sculpture carved on the surface. We will also see the hall built in the cave along this same cliff.

What to Expect

As we will take local bus from Hiraizumi station, you can enjoy scenery of countryside, rice fields in Japan.

At Takkoku-no-Iwaya, you can see unique building called Bishamon-do. It stands in front of the cave. The construction style looks like Kiyomizu Temple in Kyoto.

Speaking of Genbi-Kei Gorge, one thing that cannot be left out is 'Flying Damplings'. Let's try the fun custom of buying it. First, put some money into a basket at the hut and hit a wooden mallet. A few minutes later, from the other side of the gorge, dumplings are carried through the rope. It looks like frying dumplings in the basket. It's fun!

There is a Michi-no-Eki, literally means Road Station near Gembi-Kei Gorge. You can buy local products such as vegetables and local food, mochi at the shop.

If you want to visit , there's the Ichinoseki City Museum next to Michi-no-Eki, where Mokusa-to, origin of the Japanese swords are displayed. At there you can learn about the history of this region and the development of Japanese sword.

“ A great afternoon sampling historic sites in Ichinoseki Town, including a sake and beer brewery ”

Ichinoseki is usually a transfer point for visiting the incredible culture and history of Hiraizumi, the nearby World Heritage Area. Within limited time, Yuko walked me around a few of the key sites of Ichinoseki Town, the first being a restored samurai house from those fairly recent days when Ichinoseki was a castle town. Yuko has a lot of interesting local knowledge. Together with a volunteer guide stationed at the House, we wandered around the many rooms of what effectively for entertaining guests. We then moved to the Sekino-Ichi Sake and Beer Brewery just up the road. Yuko had arranged for fantastic personal tour of the associated Sake Museum, and then the Brewery. Yuko is very knowledgeable and helpful. Yuko enthusiastically share the sites, history and culture of the ... read more
