Overview

This tour covers Mito, the capital city of Ibaraki and its surroundings. Kairaku-en is very famous for plum blossoms from Feb to Mid Mar. Also you can see various flowers such as Nemophilas and Tulips in Hitachi seaside park. It is a good idea to try local cuisine in Oarai or Nakaminato. Anyway,this tour will surely satisfy anyone who love to see flowers.

What to Expect

You can choose a few places to visit from the following sights.

(Central Mito )
Mito city, located 100 km northeast of Tokyo, can be reached in 70 minutes by express train from Tokyo station.

1 Kairaku-en Garden(Highly recommended, Free)
Built in 1841 by the local lord, Tokugawa Nariaki, Kairaku-en is one of Japan's three finest landscape gardens where you can see various kinds of flowers throughout the year. The garden is most famous for its over 3,000 plum trees and popular during the blossom season(Late Feb to Mid - March).
Besides the plum trees Kairakuen also features a bamboo grove, cedar woods and the Kobuntei(200yen), a traditional Japanese style building.
From the Kobuntei,you can enjoy a great view of Kairakuen and nearby Lake Senba.
It takes 15 minutes by bus from Mito station.

2 Kodo-kan Hall (200yen)
Built in 1841 by Tokugawa Nariaki, it was one of the largest domain schools in Japan, where the sons of samurai were educated.
Kodokan is also famous for its over 800 plum trees as well as Kairaku-en Garden.
It is a 10-minute walk from Mito Station.

3 Howa-en garden & Hachiman-gu shrine(Free)
This area is called "Mito Romantic Zone" by locals and you can appreciate over 6,000 lovery hydrangea in June.
It takes 15 minutes by bus from Mito station.

4 Meiri Sake brewery
Try tasting not only sake but also Ume-shu,or Japanese Plum Wine. Umeshu in Mito is very popular and has a good reptation. .
It takes 10 minutes by bus from Mito station.

(Hitachi-naka Area) Katsuta is 5 minutes by train from Mito.

5 Hitachi Seaside Park(450yen, Highly Recommended. Closed on Mondays)
A wide variety of seasonal flower gardens and the most popular spot in Ibaraki prefecture.
Taking "Seaside train"(One day pass 500yen) is recommended if you are not good at walking for a long time.
(Blooming seasons of main flowers)
Narcissuse:Late Mar to mid-Apr, Tulip:Early to late Apr,Nemophila:Mid to Late April,Poppy:Early May to early Jun,Zinnia:Late Jul to mid Sep,Kochia (autumn red tint):Early to mid Oct.
It takes 15 minutes by bus from Katsuta Station.

6 Saza Coffee Main
You can taste delicious coffee in stylish space with foliage.
It is a 10 minute walk from Katsuta Station.

(Oarai & Nakaminato, Seaside area)
Oarai town is 30 minutes by bus or 15 minutes by train from Mito.
Nakaminato town is 15 minutes by train from Katsuta and just 10 minutes by bus from Oarai.

'7 Nakaminato Fish Market
Enjoy fresh seafood and shopping

8 Oarai Isosaki shrine
You can see the great view of the torii gate standing on the shore.

9 Aqua world Oarai(1850yen)
One of the largest aquarium in Japan. You can meet about 68,000 sea creatures of about 580 species.

10 Oarai Maiwai Market
Located in Oarai seaside station. You can find various souvenirs there.

(Naka area) 20 minutes by train from Mito
11 Kiuchi sake brewery
The craft beer here is very popular almost as same as sake.
Let's taste it with delicious soba lunch.

12 Weeping cherry tree at Amida-dera temple.
The old weeping cherry tree here harmonizes with a bell tower wonderfully.
The bloom time may change due to weather conditions(Bloom time is Early April)

13 Shizumine Park
Very popular spot to view Dobble cherry bloosoms(Bloom time is Mid to late April)

(Kasama area) 30 minutes by train from Mito.
Popular old city for ceramics.
14 Kasama Azalea Festival
You can see 8,000 lovely flowers . Bloom time is from late April to early May.(Entry 500yen)

Tell me the recommended itineraries?

From mid Feb to mid March, I recommend Kodo-kan and Kairaku-en park to see plum blossoms.
In early April, I recommend, Kairakuen park , Hitachi seaside park, and Amida-do temple.
Especially viewing the old weeping cherry blossoms at Amidado temple is so beautiful.
In mid April, you must visit Hitachi seaside park to see nemophillas.
