Mt. Mokoto is located in the eastern part of Hokkaido. It is not so high and you can enjoy walking on the trail well-maintained while listening to birds' singing and looking at the beautiful lake named Lake Kusharo, which is the largest crater lake in Japan. Mt. Mokoto is very famous for its view from the top and fresh underground water. Enjoy having some coffee or tea with this water at the top.

What to Expect

You can hear " Uguisu" or bush warblers chirping in summer (June - August) while walking and see some "Shima-risu" or chipmunks moving fast under the bush if you are lucky. On sunny days, you can enjoy viewing an amazingly beautiful lake, Lake Kusharo, all the way to the top.
The view of the top is incredibly beautiful and you can see a panoramic view of Shiretoko range of mountains, a part of World Natural Heritage Site and other mountains such as Mt.Oakan( male Akan), Mt.Meakan(female Akan),Mt.Mashu and Mt.Shari. Mt. Rausu, the highest mountain in the Shiretoko mountain range, Mt. Meakan and Mt. Shari are designated as one of the 100 best mountains in Japan.

I can help you visit the places around Abashiri, where I live and go hiking in our area. There isn't frequent transportation service here and I think you need to take a taxi or rent a car. We basically begin our tours from Abashiri and return to this city. If you plan to start your tour from different cities, let me know about your plan. In that case, you might need to pay for my transportation expenses and accomodation fees. There might be some cases that I have to drive a long way ( more than 3 or 4 hours for one way) and stay at a hotel on the day before meeting you.

There is no public transportation service to get to the hike starting spot, so you have to use a taxi or rent a car. Taking a taxi for both ways costs you about 20000 yen. Renting a car would be less expensive. It probably costs about 7000 yen a day ( fares vary depend on the size of the car you rent )The hike can be canceled due to the bad weather. The tour will be done in case of the slight rainfall with a little wind. Hike time is 1.5 hours up and 1 hour down not including rest and lunch time. You need rainware, warm clothes, cap, gloves, face towel, bottled water, hike foods and hiking boots ( the muddy trails could be slippery after the rainfall ). You can visit the local cheese factory and "onsen" or hot spring after the hike if you like. In case of canceling hike, we visit other tourist spots near the mountain instead. read more

“ Custom tour of Abashiri ”

Hiroshi is an excellent and knowledgeable guide around the Abashiri area. He’s very communicative and worked with me to research and schedule a tour to fit my interests so don’t feel limited by the tour description on Triplelights. He was a gracious host. We ate the best oysters I have ever tasted near Lake Saroma. His English is very good, both written and spoken

Thank you for your kind comments, Craig. I'm happy to know you really enjoyed your stay in Abashiri. December is not the best time to visit Abashiri, but we did have a great time visiting scenic spots, water birds observation and drift ice museum. Especially, having delicious oysters WAS a high-light for me, too. Please come and visit Abashiri again and have more memorable experiences with me. Thanks again for visiting Abashiri. Hiroshi.
