Overview

The attractions of this nostalgic port town named " Tomonoura" are within distances from the bus stop and it's comfortable walking. You may be surprised to see KUBIZUKA( the mound for severed head ) is among old houses where people live their every day life. In this small fishing town, life and death coexist naturally. Time is passing slowly in this town.

What to Expect

Have you seen enough of temples and shrines? How about spending a relaxing time in a small town that preserves a historic atmosphere? Tomonoura is a port town at the southern end of Fukuyama city, Hiroshima prefecture. Located at a bay facing the Seto Inland Sea , the picturesque fishing port town has a calm and laid-back atmosphere . Tomonoura is a part of the Setonaikai National Park, which has been picked as a filming location for movies such as " The Wolveine" starring Hugh Jackman and " Ponyo on the Cliff" by the popular Studio Ghibli. We visit there by bus which runs from Fukuyama Station every 20 minutes. Fukuyama Station is on the JR Sanyo Shinkansen. Direct Sakura and Nozomi shinkansen trains connect Hiroshima / Shin -Osaka to Fukuyama Station, costing about 4420/ 7340 JPY one way. The Japan Rail Pass fully covers the trip on Sakura trains but not on Nozomi trains.

“ Peace Park and Miyajima Island ”

Azusa is a great guide. We had la t minute changes to schedule which Azusa easily accommodated. Her knowledge of Hiroshima and sights was impressive, travel schedule was easy to do. Overall we had a lovely relaxed and informed day with Azusa. I cannot recommend her highly enough. Thank you Azusa. Peter

We got lucky with great weather. Maybe both of you have brought this lovely weather with you. Your journey has just begun and I hope this great weather will hold while you are in Japan. “ Wonderful half day tour of Hiroshima ”

Azusa helped us make the most of our short time in Hiroshima. She guided us through the ancient and modern history of Hiroshima, highlighting points of interest not in the travel brochures. Azusa found a wonderful authentic Okonomiyaki restaurant for lunch. Azusa is very friendly and helpful and communicates clearly in English. I would recommend Azusa to anyone visiting Hiroshima.

Azusa:

Dear Gary san I appreciate your great message so much. Both of you are really warm-hearted. You make me relaxed with the wonderful humor. During the tour I always feel comfortable being with you. And thank you so much for showing me your granddaughter's photo. She is as cute as a button. She must be the apple of your eyes. Unfortunately this autumn we have had many typhoons so I'm afraid you might not have fully enjoyed your stay in Japan. I would definitely like you and your family to come to Japan again once your granddaughter and the second grandchild get old enough. Wishing you good health, Azusa Arita

“ Engaging, helpful and impactful! ”

I took the Miyajima Half-Day Tour with Azusa. Her breadth of knowledge about the sight's history and religious importance alongside her understanding of Japanese culture more generally really brought my time in Miyajima to life! She provides considered and thoughtful guidance, ensuring that any questions you may have are not left unanswered. We started at the famous Tori Gate on Miyajima island, moved into the Tokokuni Shrine, ventured through the Daiganji Temple and eventually concluded our tour of the island through its shopping streets. Along with her extensive knowledge of the island, Azusa manages to take wonderful photos without fault! I have no hesitation in recommending Azusa for anyone who is looking for a personal and impactful tour through Miyajima. Her tour was certai... read more

Azusa:

Dear Andrew san Thank you so much for your kind message and recommending me. It was my pleasure to spend a really wonderful time with you in Miyajima. Your considerate attitude and a pleasant sense of humor must have been nurtured in your multiracial country. I learned a lot from speaking with you. It was inspiring for a tour guide from a racially homogeneous nation. Your job is very demanding and challenging. I hope you will enjoy your precious holidays to the fullest. Take care and good luck ! Sincerely, Azusa Arita

“ Amazing visit to Miyajim ”

Amazing guide! She made sure we understood the history and story behind what we saw and visited and made our day with her an amazing memory. Azusa san is, on top of that, an extremely nice person and spending the day with her was a pleasure!

Azusa:

Dear Mariona san Thank you so much for your kind words. You are sailing a boat. So I thought this calm inland sea was not just good enough for you. But I am really glad to know that you are satisfied with Hiroshima tour. Both of you are so polite and kindhearted persons and above all showed much interest in things Japanese, which made me so delighted. The hot days continue on. Please take care of yourselves.

“ Great half day introduction of Hiroshima and Miyajima ”

Ari san was friendly, funny and informative. We had a great time touring Miyajima and Hiroshima with her. Her knowledge was genuinely insightful, we left with a deeper understanding of Shinto customs and the history of the region. We would highly recommend booking a tour with her.

Azusa:

Dear Poh san I really appreciate your kind message. You are extremely humorous and wonderful couple. I was very glad to be with both of you. Fulfilling every day in your country seems to enrich your lives. I envy you. Someday I would love to go to your country . And your interest in Japanese art surprised me. Talking to you motivated me to study more about Japanese art. In Naoshima, please fully enjoy Japanese modern art. I wish you both happiness forever !
