What to Expect

Private tour to Shirakawago world heritage villages, starting and ending in Takayama. The tour includes land transport by hired van, highway tolls, parking fee, quick stop at viewpoints. (Walking guide in Shirakawago village, not included)

Shirakawa-go is situated in northwestern Gifu Prefecture, 50 mins away from Takayama, at the foot of Mt.Hakusan, sacred mountain.
It is the region of one of the heaviest snowfalls in Japan, and yet one of the most popular destinations for tourists visiting Central Japan,
since the registration as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995.
More than 2 millions people from all over the world annually visit this small village with the local population of less than 2,000 people.

These villages are well known for their houses constructed in the architectural style known as "gassho-style", meaning "prayer-hands" style. It is characterized by a thatched and steep roof resembling two hands joined in prayer. The design is exceptionally strong and, in combination with the unique properties of the thatching, allow the houses to withstand and shed the weight of the region's heavy snowfalls in winter.
More than 100 thatched-roof "Gassyo-style" Houses still remains and stand together in the village.
Local people are still living in those houses, and most of residents have tourism business such as guest house, restaurant, cafe, souvenir shops, etc.

By this tour, you can explore this small and lovely village by walking, and enjoy the unique and beautiful rural landscape with traditional Japanese sentiments.
We stop at viewpoint to see the whole village from top of the hill.
(Usually you need to either walk 20-25 mins or take a shuttle bus with extra charge, but this tour includes the trip to the wonderful viewpoint.)

After the walking tour in the village, if the guests want to try natural ONSEN (Hot Spring), we can take you to nearby ONSEN (Optional).
If requested, we can take guests to recommended restaurant (either for lunch or dinner, depending on the time schedule).
Before dropping you at your hotel, we can also take you to some shopping (Optional, such as local shopping mall, used items shop, drug store, super-markets, etc.).

Hi, I'm Junichi, a Japanese business owner, based in Takayama, Gifu prefecture, JAPAN. My hometown is Ogaki, Gifu Prefecture, and not too far from Takayama. After working in Africa for 10 years for Japanese Government as development aid worker, I moved to this small but lovely town, Takayama in 2015 with my family, and opened Thai restaurant and Guest House.

My wife is Thai and she cooks great Thai food, I believe. We run two properties to rent as guesthouse in Takayama, both a few mins walk from Takayama station.

I am a government-licensed English tour guide(No.EN00086), and sometimes conduct local guided tours nearby Takayama. I drive my own vans for private customized tours. I am preparing some trekking and natural trail tours in near future. The most popular tour is for Shirakawago world heritage village, Shinhotaka Mountain view, Kamikochi Mountain Resort. Guiding can be done in English, French or Thai. read more

“ Karuizawa and snow monkeys ”

Mr Junichi was very patient and informative. He brought my family to some very interesting places in Karuizawa where we are staying - The stone church, Shiraito falls and the Magma stone park at Mt Asama. The sites were very beautiful and interesting. My family had a nice time. Lunch in old town Karuizawa was great - very good recommendation and the afternoon was spent visiting the snow monkey park. All in all a very good day trip, thanks to Mr Junichi and our van driver Mr Shimizu ( old but steady hands )
