The Hida Great Limestone Cave is popular destination by tourists visiting Takayama. It is located 30 mins away by car from Takayama.
It is a fantastic place that opens up 800 meters underground below a waterfall. In all of Japan, this is the only place where one can see delicate finger-like helictite cave formations. Nearby, one can also see the Ohashi Museum’s regular display of about 1000 world-renowned works of art, handicrafts, and ornamentations.
If you had never explored inside caves, this will be a quite adventurous and exciting experience !
You can see beautifully and mysteriously lit-up colorful limestone.
Walking paths are well paved, so anyone can try to go down and enjoy this wonderful attraction.
The walking tour inside the caves would take 1 or 1.5 hour, depending on your walking speed, as well as how many courses you would cover.
If you are tired or a bit scared, you can get out from the cave after passing through 1st walking path, as shortest course.
On the way back to Takayama, we would stop at "Senkoji" Temple, which is one of the oldest temple in Takayama with 1,200 years history, and more than 60 wooden curved Buddha statues made by famous dedicated monk "Enku".
In Takayama town, we will also stop at "Zenkoji" temple for interesting "Kaidan" Tour.
This is another form of mysterious experiences you never forget in Buddhist temple's underground.
You need to walk through the complete darkness in the pass underground, and try to touch the special key to "Paradise",which is positioned right below the Buddha statue in the Main Hall. It could by a bit scary, but wonderful experience for sure !
junichi was patient and helpful. We were late in meeting him but he was very accommodating. Our tour of Shirakawa-go was great. There were 4 in our family group & his van was spacious. I would highly recommend Junichi.
Visit Shirakawago World heritage village by private van. Half day tour starting and ending in Takayama. Viewpoint Stop is included in the tour. Additional stops at restaurants, shops, hot springs, station, etc. can be flexibly arranged without extra fee.
In this tour, you can experience 3 types of different Japanese traditional musical instruments, "Shamisen" "Taiko" and "Fue".
