Strolling around the most famous traditional post town takes you back to nostalgic Japan. The moment visitors enter the towns on the highway Nakasendo, they will feel as if they are in a time warp of Edo period, where local people spend daily lives and welcome tourists preserving buildings and landscape. You will find authentic Japan walking through a cozy town in a one-day tour from Nagoya.

What to Expect

Tsumago-juku is one of the traditional post-towns of the Nakasendo highway. In the 1960s, this small town was on the verge of deterioration and about to lose its unique figure because of development in the wake of modernization. However, it revived through citizen’s preservation movement and was designated as one of the Important Traditional Buildings Preservation Areas by the government.

Visitors stroll around an authentic traditional town and see a nostalgic townscape which consists of traditional wooden houses. Wakihonjin-Okuya(National Important Cultural Property) is one of the typical buildings in which the Meiji emperor stayed. It is open for everyone to visit and enjoy walking through most rooms and seeing valuable antique goods, while hearing an exquisite explanation by a local guide.

When you feel hungry or thirsty, some cozy restaurants and sweet shops will satisfy your appetite. My recommendations are Gohei-mochi with green tea or handmade buckwheat noodles, Soba, with Sake. Gohei-mochi is a soft rise-cake with sweet soy-bean paste. You might get hooked on its simple and delicious taste that you’ve never experienced before.

If you want, you could walk from the next town Magome to Tsumago, or the either way. It only takes 90 minutes. On the way, you can enjoy serene landscapes and nature including a waterfall. Moderately maintained pavements and signboards lead you in the right direction on the mountain. I am sure you will feel like being an ancient traveler.

Magome is also a post town similar to Tsumago which is known for the birthplace of a famous novelist Toson Shimazaki. In Magome most houses were rebuilt after a big fire at the end of 19th century, but a variety of shops and museums, such as Toson’s Museum and Shimizuya Museum, attracts many tourists thorough the year.

“ Trip to Takayama ”

Tetsuji was very nice and enjoyable to be with. He was flexible in terms of our adding places we wanted to see in Takayama. His English is very good. When we asked questions he couldn't answer, he worked hard to find someone who could answer them. We know that Tesuji is fairly new to this, and expect that he will gain more knowledge of Takayama as he takes more clients there.

“ Interesting trip to Takayama Spirng Festival and Inuyama & Gifu Castles ”

Tetsuji was our guide for 2 consecutive days. He is very friendly and flexible with his itineraries; and he went the extra mile to ensure our needs are met. Instead of meeting at the JR station as per his iitineray, he came all the way to the hotel to meet us. He is also very honest. When I wanted him to do a tour to view sakuar near his hometown on 14 April, he did not want to commit as he wanted to check with the meteorological station nearer the date to make sure that there were flowers on the particular day. A few days before 14April he emailed to say that there will be flowers in Takayama which coincided with the first day of the spring festival. He rushed to get us train tickets on the wide Hida train and paid with his own money first. We had tickets for the first class cabin and the experience was fabulous. He also took us around the shopping streets in Takayama and the old town too. The next day after we toured the castles, he arranged for us (at my request) to visit a traditional umbrella making artisan. This was not part of the itinerary but Tetsuji obliged me and went out of his way to do it. Despite being a Sunday and the shop was not opened, he managed to arrange for us to visit the shop. He used his personal car to drive us to the shop to save time and dropped us back at the train station in Gifu. Such is friendly, obliging, knowledgeable and flexible with the itinerary. Oh before I forget, he took us to the traditional Japanese dessert shop in Aichi for my favorite Sakura mochi. A trip to Japan is not complete without getting my fix of the Sakura mochi. Thank you Tetsuji for being our guide. Wishing you every success.

“ Flexible and friendly ”

Tetsuji prepared special itineraries for me in smaller towns, one of which became problematic but not through any fault of his. I was impressed by the care and planning he had undertaken and how quickly he grasped what I wanted to see and made arrangements for lots of tea breaks so that we went at my pace. I very much enjoyed our time together and would recommend anyone visiting Japan to go out of the big cities to see different aspects of Japan with Tetsuji.

“ Highlight of our Trip to Japan ”

We were fortunate to have Tetsuji as our guide. He provided a wonderful experience for us as we got to see Gifu Castle, Cormorant Fishing, and Kawara-machi... we also enjoyed Squirrel Village & shopping. In addition, we relaxed in the open air Onsen at Hotel Park, under the beautiful moonlight with a view of Gifu Castle. Tetsuji was very flexible, personable & easy to understand. Highly recommended.
