Overview

Takayama is a small city in a mountainous area which many tourists visit throughout the year. This tour will give you more satisfaction than others. Because the tour includes some healing spots in addition to popular tourist spots. The tour includes Miyagawa Morning Market, Higashiyama Walking, Old Town and Hida-Furukawa. I'm sure you’ll be able to see why Takayama mesmerizes tourists so much.

What to Expect

Takayama is a small city surrounded by mountains. It takes about two hours by train from Nagoya. However, it has a variety of tourist attractions throughout the year that is difficult for you to find in big cities. You will be able to visit the best spots in the Takayama area in a one-day tour.

First, you will be strolling through Miyagawa Morning Market, where many stalls stand on the riverside, selling fresh farm-products, foods and local crafts etc.You will enjoy not only tasting or buying them but also chatting with local people.

Next, you will visit Kusakabe Heritage House, which is one of the traditional merchant houses featuring many characteristic designs and materials of the Edo period. Walking around the house freely, you will feel and realize the atmosphere of life in those days.

Then, I will lead you to Higashiyama Temple Area which includes many temples and shrines. Since this area is located at the foothills looking down on the center of the city, you can enjoy scenic hiking while visiting all the historical sites.

After lunch, you will stroll around the Old Town Area to your heart's content. Many shops and museums are located along the street, including 'Takayama Museum of History and Art' and Takayama Jinya. You can also enjoy tasting Sake in some breweries, if you like.

Finally, If you aren't tired, you will move to the cozy town Hida-Furukawa and become relaxed by strolling through the town and watching carp in the river

“ Interesting trip to Takayama Spirng Festival and Inuyama & Gifu Castles ”

Tetsuji was our guide for 2 consecutive days. He is very friendly and flexible with his itineraries; and he went the extra mile to ensure our needs are met. Instead of meeting at the JR station as per his iitineray, he came all the way to the hotel to meet us. He is also very honest. When I wanted him to do a tour to view sakuar near his hometown on 14 April, he did not want to commit as he wanted to check with the meteorological station nearer the date to make sure that there were flowers on the particular day. A few days before 14April he emailed to say that there will be flowers in Takayama which coincided with the first day of the spring festival. He rushed to get us train tickets on the wide Hida train and paid with his own money first. We had tickets for the first class cabin and the experience was fabulous. He also took us around the shopping streets in Takayama and the old town too. The next day after we toured the castles, he arranged for us (at my request) to visit a traditional umbrella making artisan. This was not part of the itinerary but Tetsuji obliged me and went out of his way to do it. Despite being a Sunday and the shop was not opened, he managed to arrange for us to visit the shop. He used his personal car to drive us to the shop to save time and dropped us back at the train station in Gifu. Such is friendly, obliging, knowledgeable and flexible with the itinerary. Oh before I forget, he took us to the traditional Japanese dessert shop in Aichi for my favorite Sakura mochi. A trip to Japan is not complete without getting my fix of the Sakura mochi. Thank you Tetsuji for being our guide. Wishing you every success.

“ Flexible and friendly ”

Tetsuji prepared special itineraries for me in smaller towns, one of which became problematic but not through any fault of his. I was impressed by the care and planning he had undertaken and how quickly he grasped what I wanted to see and made arrangements for lots of tea breaks so that we went at my pace. I very much enjoyed our time together and would recommend anyone visiting Japan to go out of the big cities to see different aspects of Japan with Tetsuji.

“ Highlight of our Trip to Japan ”

We were fortunate to have Tetsuji as our guide. He provided a wonderful experience for us as we got to see Gifu Castle, Cormorant Fishing, and Kawara-machi... we also enjoyed Squirrel Village & shopping. In addition, we relaxed in the open air Onsen at Hotel Park, under the beautiful moonlight with a view of Gifu Castle. Tetsuji was very flexible, personable & easy to understand. Highly recommended.

“ Gifu/Cormorant Fishing ”

Tetsuji was an amazing, excellent and very personable guide to beautiful sights of Gifu. Highlights were visit with cormorant fishing master, viewing boat spectacle of cormorant fishing (with delicious dinner box) on Nagara river, giant Buddha viewing, trip to Gifu Park with Ropeway ride then short hike to Gifu Castle, and panoramic night view from observation floor at top of skyscraper near Gifu station. It was a great day!!! One that my husband and I will always remember thanks to Tetsuji.
