Soma-Nomaoi is one of the most traditional festivals in Fukushima prefecture, which has a history of over 1,000 years. Through this tour, you can appriciate the ancient battle scenes of the samurai warriors including a heroic horse race and more. We use public transportation such as buses or local train . You can make a day trip from Tokyo if taking express train "Hitachi" or Tohoku-Shinkansen.

What to Expect

This traditional event is said to have begun in the 10th century as part of militaly exercises secretly held by the city's samurai warriors.
Now this three-day festival is held by three local shrines of Soma area every year and it is resignated as a national important intangible folk curtural property.

This tour focuses on the second day which is said to be the main highlight of the entire festival.
On the second day, there are main ceremonies which are held in central area of Minami-Soma City.
Have fun viewing the valiant horserace and samurai culture.

1 O-gyoretsu (Procession) Start 9:30 a.m.
All the samurai horsemen who have gatherd from different regions with portable shrines march to the Hibarigaoka Battle Field.

2 Kacchu-Keiba(Horse race) Start 12:00 p.m.

3 Shinki-Sodatsusen( Battle in which hundreds of mounted samurai compete for sacred flags that are shot into the air with canons)
Start 1:00 p.m.

On this tour , basically I will guide you #2 & #3.
But,of course I can guide you #1 if you pay me extra guide fee (2,000 yen). In that case, you should stay at a hotel near Iwaki station or Fukushima sation on July 28.
And The meeting time would be 7:30 a.m.at Fukushima station or 6:00 a.m. at Iwaki Station.
To find accommodations in Minami-Soma city , the place where the festival is held, seems to be extremely difficult during the festival.

Of course I can arrange your itinerary on your request.
