Overview

This tour covers Aizu-Wakamatsu city, a former feudal capital,and its surrounding. Through the tour you can surely appreciate the samurai culture, beautiful rural landscapes and delicious local cuisines.We use public transportation such as buses, taxi and local train of JR Ban'etsu West Line . You can make a day trip from Tokyo if taking Tohoku Shinkansen.

(Aizu-Wakamatsu City)
Aizu-Wakamatsu was once the capital of the Aizu clan and is the largest city in Aizu area.
It can be reached in 70 minutes from Koriyama by train or highway buses.

1 Tsuruga-joCastle( 410 yen )
The simbolic icon of this city which became a battle spot for Boshin civil war of 1868.

2 Iimori-yama
The mountain where the group of teenage samurai called the Byakko-tai(White Tigers) killed themselves during the Boshin civil war.
There are tombs of the Byakkotai.
Sazae-do, a rare 18th-century wooden hall of a Buddhist temple, is a famous spot , too(400 yen).

(Kitakata City)
Kitakata has prospered from its brewing industry since ancient times. You can visit the old distinctive storehouses and taste the famous local dish of Kitakata ramen.
Kitakata is 15 km north of Aizu-Wakamatsu.

2 Yamatogawa Sake Brewery(400 yen)

3 Kitakata Ramen Noodle
Over 100 shops serve Ramen within the town. Try the rich ramen flavourd with special soy sauce.

4 Shingu Kumano Shrine Nagatoko(Recommended)
The Nagatoko, the worship hall of Shingu Kumano shrine, was built in 1055. Its thatched roof is supported by 44 massive pillars.
In November, the Nagatoko makes a beautiful contrast with 800 year-old sacred ginko trees.


(Shimogo Town)
Located 20 km south of Aizu-wakamatsu, Shimogo is a lovely countryside with rich nature.
There are several hot springs along River Okawa. Yunokami Onsen and Ashinomaki Onsen are popular.

1 Ouchi-juku(Recommended)
A former post town along the route between Nikko and Aizu-Wakamatsu in 17th to 19th century.
You can feel as if you were in the Edo Period. Soba noodles and fish roasted on sticks are popular specialities.

2 To-no-Hetsuri
A Impressive rock valley naturally created by Okawa River. To-no- Hetsuri literally means the row of cliffs which are shaped like towers.

3 The buckwheat fields of Sarugaku Plateau(Recommended)
From late August to early September, you can see the stunning natural beauty of the while flower carpet at the huge flat fields.

Important

I do not recommend visiting Ouchi-juku on weekends very much because being very crowded.

I can guide you in Tokyo and Chiba area if you pay my transpotation fee.

*I strongly recommend that you should take out travel insurance before leaving your country.
*If you have much baggage, please tell me before the tour starts. There are some coin lockers at JR Koriyama Station and JR Aizu-Wakamatsu Station.
* I do reccommend to exchange money beforehand. There are some banks near JR Koriyama Station or JR Aizu-Wakamatsu station (Open 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.)
* It is very sensible to purchase Japan Rail Pass before leaving your country.
