Makoto is a very well-organised guide who gave us an excellent insight into Kyoto. Having worked in the US and the UK he speaks excellent English and has a very easy-going manner which made his introduction to Japanese history through our visits to Nijo and the Imperial Palace very easy to follow. Unlike some guides who can give too much detail Makoto pitched it just right and left us with some excellent print-outs to study later. Before our trip I had expressed an interest in Samurai sword making and he would have been prepared to arrange a factory visit, although this proved impractical in the timescale of our visit. Nonetheless, on the day he gave us an superb print-out showing the production process which must have taken some considerable effort. Just one example of the efforts Mak is prepared to go to to ensure that we got as much out of our single day with him. We finished our tour in Nishiki Market having also appreciated that with Mak's guidance during the day and a little effort, the subway and bus system is actually easy to use. Makoto is highly recommended and we find it difficult to think how our day with him could have been improved.
