What colors can we see today?

That is the question often asked by most of the foreign guests we guide when approaching the crater of Lake Kelimutu. The answer is nobody knows! It all depends on the mood of the spirits who inhabit the lake.

Kelimutu Volcano with three crater lakes each with "boiling water" can be called Dark Green, Turquoise and Dark Brown if it does not change color to Rred, White and Blue. This color change makes the crater lake Kelimutu a world wonder.

Exploring Kelimutu Three Colored Crater Lakes At Sunrise!

Kelimutu lakes is located within the Kelimutu National Park on the island of Flores, precisely at Moni Village, 62 kilometers from the city of Ende.

Experts provide several explanations for discoloration; perhaps because of the smoke emanating from below and moving the highly nutritious water upwards or vice versa, others claim this is a mere chemical reaction. But the people around Kelimutu have the most unique version. They believed all of them were spirits of the dead who constantly changed the color of the three crater lakes - every time the spirits' moods shifted, the lakes changed color. Because it happens so often it means the spirit is somewhat restless after death.

Some mystical details that the lake which is located apart from the other two lakes in the west is usually white in color and is called Tiwu Ata Bupu, which means Lake of the Old People--considered as a gathering place for the spirits of people who live their lives well and properly. Two other lakes are divided by thin crater walls, namely Tiwu Nuwa Muri Ko'o Fai or Young Boys and Girls Lake, usually light green or turquoise which symbolizes a life filled with happiness. And the last is Dark Green and often changes to a Bloody Red as a gathering place for the spirits of those who have behaved badly or maliciously during their lifetime.

A walk around the edge of the lake is possible, but not at all recommended as the volcanic rock escapes, and the harsh steam emanating from the lake can give you a headache. It is best to see the lake through the fence.

The most convenient and comfortable season to climb Mount Kelimutu is the dry season between May and September, and the peak falls in July and August. If you arrive at the top 15 minutes before 06:00 am you will see the amazing sunrise.

Apart from enjoying the beauty of Lake Kelimutu, you can also see people from the surrounding villages selling hand-woven fabrics from Lio-Ende, coffee, tea and various kinds of breakfast made from local ingredients.
In quiet moments you can also see monkeys who come looking for food from crumbs of biscuits, bread or peanuts. And if you really stay still for a moment, you will hear the sound of the universe.
