Tip Custom in Japan

It is said that no people in Japan tip.

Who said?   It is not correct.

Surely it is unnecessary to tip to the person who is working in a restaurant, a taxi, a hotel, and some other big companies and governmental offices. Because they are an employee of the companies or the organizations and get enough monthly salary in a long life employment system.

However, there is a tipping custom in some trades like travel and golf.

It is a different way from the Western-style.

In Japan, it is common to tip to golf caddie before playing the golf.

The same way is in bus travel. People tip to the bus travel guide, usually female, and the bus driver before the bus starts.

It may encourage them to do their best in their job on the day.

In the case of the National Tour Guide and a tour leader, Tenjoin in Japanese, it is common that the tourists tip to them at the end of the tour.

The National Tour Guide is a freelancer and the tour leader is a part-time jobber with not enough fee.

So, it is natural that you tip to them if you are satisfied with their service.
