The Dog Days' Custom in Japan, Doyo No Ushi NO Hi, 土用の丑の日 

Autumn starts around August 8th according the lunar calendar. 

The term doyo refers to 18-day period before autumn starts. 

 

立秋は8月8日頃から始まります。土用とは立秋前の18日間のことを言います。

Therefore, doyo starts around July 20 and ends on August 7.

土用は7月下旬にはじまり立秋で終わると考えればいいです。

Usi-no-hi(day-of-ox) is one of the 12 signs of the Chinese zodiac.

According to the lunar calendar, every day has its own zodiac sign.

丑の日とは、12支に出てくる「丑」の日のことです。一日ごとに12支が割りふられています。

"Doyo No Ushi No Hi" falls on the ox day during the 18 days before the start of autumn.

土用の丑の日とは、18日間で丑の日に該当する日のことをいいます。

On this day, since the old times, people have eaten the food which name starts with "u."  Eel is unagi in Japanese.

古来、この日に、「う」のつく食べ物を食べる習慣がありました。

 People enjoyed eating unagi in the Edo period. 

江戸時代、うなぎは食用にされていました。

They got over the dog days of summer by eating eel.

人々はうなぎを食べて熱い夏を乗り切りました。

 

Even today, people eat eel on this day.

その習慣は今でもつづいています。
