Sakuradamon Gate Incident

Who would become 14th shogun was the greatest concern in those days.

Mito domain (today's Ibaragi prefecture) recommended Yoshinobu so that they might take the intiative in the government.

But Ii Naosuke supported Iemochi of Ki domain (today's Wakayaa) as the 14th shogun.

In the end Iemochi became the 14th shogun of the Edo government.

Mito groups, completely defeated in the succession of shogun, blamed Ii Naosuke for his diplomatic policy instead. They tried to expel him from the position. They attacked him, saying the Treaty of Amity and Commerce would be invalid because it was not permitted by the emperor.

They made use of the emperor.

It  was a taboo in the Edo shogunate to involve emperors in political affairs.

One of the major families in the Edo shogun comitted such a crucial mistake which shook the base of the government.   In his eyes, Mito group's activities were equal to anti-government campaign to overthrow the Edo government.

Naosuke arrested anti-foreigner leaders across Japan and punished them to death.

Mito domain which lost leading figures was like a powder magazine.

In early morning in 1860 winter, 18 samurai members selected from the Mito groups attacked and assassinated Naosuke outside the Sakuradamon gate of Edo castle (today's Imperial Palace).

The Edo government lost the key person.

There was no talented person to deal with difficulties and lead the samurai government.

Masaki is an excellent guide. Being a previous history teacher, his knowledge allowed us to appreciated the sites much more. While English is his second language, he was understandable. We only had 10 hours during our cruise to see Osaka and the surrounding area, but he catered to the destinations and activities that we wanted in the short amount of time allowed. He also had good and prompt commun...

I was eager to see lots of Kyoto in the limited time I had there. As a former History teacher, Masaki helped me work out a great itinerary to make the most of my time, prior to my trip. The day of my tour, Masaki arrived promptly and immediately began pointing out places of interest from steps from my Ryokan. Masaki never missed an opportunity to point out the things that were of importance to me,...

Masaki San was explaining very well with a clear and delicate voice: he makes you dive right into the stories as it was a movie ! With the homemade illustrated book that he carries around, you can picture it even more ! He is not only a good guide, but he is also an amazing human being ! Even if the day spent with Masaki San was rainy, he managed to make it sunny :) We recommend him 100% ! ...

We can’t thank Masaki enough for his personalized tour. He was knowledgeable about the sites we visited and led us through some very cool zen exercises while at Ryoanji temple. He provided us with some spectacular photos after our tour and when we are concerned about emergency alerts regarding flood conditions, he reached out to us to provide helpful advice. In the end he was more than just a tour...

My family spent months planning to squeeze Kyoto, Nara and Osaka it to 2 days, with Misaki’s help we made that happen. He was kind, informative, organized and a pleasure to talk and walk with.
