The Arrival of Black Ships and Japan's diplomacy

(1-10)

In 1853, the black ships led by Commodore Perry appeared at Uraga.

Japanese people were stunned at the sight of the huge ships that they had never seen.

Perry handed  the samurai government a message from the President of the U.S. and left Japan.  But he didn't forget to tell that they would come back again after one year.

They wanted to secure stopping points in Japan for whaling ships.

Under the Tokugawa shogunate, Japan closed its door to the world and enjoyed peace and prosperity for 260 years without being disturbed by foreign countries.

The shogunate didn't know how to cope with their requirements made by Perry.

They no longer had the power to solve the matter on their own.

They were at a loss what to do. They reported it to the Imperial Court in Kyoto and asked for the opinions of powerful feudal lords,

The following year, Perry came back again.

There were no wars for 260 years. Nobody of the samurai government knew how to fight a war.

They had no intention to make war against the black ships.

The shogunate knew that China had suffered terrible damage caused by the Opium War.

In 1854, Japan made a treaty with the United States.

The Arrival of Black Ships and Japan's diplomacy

Japan was reluctantly agreed to open two ports for the whale ships of the U.S. and to supply food, water, and coal.

This is the treaty of Peace and Amity between Japan and the U.S.

Because of the seclusion policy there were few experts in the government who were well informed of foreign affairs.

To tell the truth, there was a person named John Manjiro, but unfortunately his  talent didnt't come to light.

There were no risk management system at least among the top officials of the samurai government.

I simply can not say enough about Masaki and his skill as a tour guide. Not in a million years would we had been able to see so many beautiful sights in Kyoto without his ability to move us from place to place, purchasing entry tickets without hassle but also knowing the fastest ways in & out plus the timing of our arrivals & exits were spot on. Masaki & Steve had quite a long conversation about...

Masaki was a very helpful guide. Even before we started the tour with him, he gave us directions to get to Kyoto (as we were coming in on train) and helped me source a wheelchair for my Mum who needed it after she had a fall the day after she landed. He made the whole thing easier. I am glad we had him. He also provided in depth info about Kyoto through information that he put together in a bookle...

We experienced a most relaxing yet educational day with Masaki, touring the sites of Uji, home of matcha. Because my husband’s mobility and energy was compromised, Masaki chose this outing for its length and flat terrain, plus he is very atuned to the history there. He was most patient with our challenges yet delivered a wonderful tour.

Excellent and easy communication with Masaki during preparation for the tour. Masaki speaks very good English. He answered all questions promptly and thoroughly and he made suggestions and sent photos of alternative sights to see when one of the places we wanted to go to was not open on the date of our tour. He went out of his way to book us additional services like the rickshaw and a van which wa...

Masaki could not have worked harder. He took us to all of the places we wanted to see and tailored the itinerary perfectly. He is full of knowledge and good humour. We did not simply see the sights, we learned about the history of Zen Buddhism, meditation practice and breathing and Japanese philosophy. After the tour was over, he sent us over 70 excellent photos that he had taken during the day, w...
