Surround Yourself With Youngsters at the Annual 'Gakusai's

by Mieke - TripleLights travel specialist

All of Japan’s universities and some of its colleges hold gakusai, or students’ festivals, every year in autumn. Most of the after school circles and clubs do presentations (dance and singing performances, poetry recitals, live drawing etc) or have a stand and sell typical Japanese street food, such as ‘okonomiyaki’ (savoury pancake), crepes and much more. If it’s on offer, try my favourite: fried ice!

Some cool ones to visit, with their 2014 dates:

Keio University’s ‘Mita sai’
21-24 November 2014
Visited by some 200.000 people each year, one of the bigger festivals. Enjoy food stalls, recitals, dressed-up people watching, and their impressive dance performance (I participated in it once!).

Sofia University’s ‘Sofia Festival’
1-3 November 2014
This year’s theme: travel. Join Sofia’s students in the festival they’ve worked a year for to produce. With so many food stalls and performances, I’m sure you will not be bored!

Kyoto University Festival
21-24 November 2014
Also here you can find numerous festival food stalls, performances and club activities. If you’re lucky you might meet some cross dressing members of the anime club!

My husband who was first skeptical about traveling to Japan now wants to come back. Thanks to Richard! Richard was professional, knowledgeable, but more important- FUN!!! We visited all my wish list excursions but Richard manages to include off the beaten path experiences which ended up being our favorite. We can’t thank him enough for making our trip so memorable. My husband and I spent our first day in Kyoto with Mari. She was awesome (and her English was excellent) and showed us so much in our one day together. She helped us navigate the subway system as well as understand the Japanese culture and way of living. The local yakitori restaurant she took us to was awesome and authentic too. She will customize your tour based on what you want to see and wi...

1 day ago Traveler: Senthil -   Tour Guide: Hiroshi

Our family of 4 had a great time touring Kyoto. Hiroshi was simply great. He explained all the details and history of all the spots he took us in Kyoto. Without him, I am sure we couldn't even seen half of the places we would intended to see. He knows Kyoto in and out as he was a native of this town. His knowledge about all the tourist spot and attractions was very evident - he knows this stuff fo...

2 days ago Traveler: Richard -   Tour Guide: Koichi

I traveled to Kyoto with 2 of my children ages 20 and 19. We hired Koichi as our guide and could not have been happier. He spoke excellent English. He took us to see many interesting sites in Kyoto. He had a strong knowledge of the history of the places we visited. We also wanted an authentic Japanese restaurant that was not a tourist trap and could accommodate my vegan daughter and son with ...

We had only 1,5 days in Kyoto and wanted to see a lot! We had a very big list of things to see. With excellent time management skills and knowledge of the area he guided us with ease! We were able to see not only main attraction but also some hidden gems of Kyoto. We would not be able to see all of it on our one! Thank you! Kindly, Jurgita

5 days ago Traveler: Hanna -   Tour Guide: Kosuke

We really enjoyed our day with Kosuke. He took us to many temples, shrines, parks and unique places where tourists don't typically wonder, which provided much more insight into the culture and life in Kyoto. He also took us to Nara even though it was not scheduled because he said it would be a fun place for the girls and he was absolutely right! The extra drive was very worthwhile. Later in the ...

We spent a full day in Kyoto with Yoshie and he was an absolutely pleasure...extremely knowledgeable and consideration. We covered more ground this day than any other in our trip and he didn't just walk us to the spots for good picture taking but gave us the full background and significance of each site which was what we were looking for. Yoshie was a great conversationalist and highly sensit...
