Surround Yourself With Youngsters at the Annual 'Gakusai's

by Mieke - TripleLights travel specialist

All of Japan’s universities and some of its colleges hold gakusai, or students’ festivals, every year in autumn. Most of the after school circles and clubs do presentations (dance and singing performances, poetry recitals, live drawing etc) or have a stand and sell typical Japanese street food, such as ‘okonomiyaki’ (savoury pancake), crepes and much more. If it’s on offer, try my favourite: fried ice!

Some cool ones to visit, with their 2014 dates:

Keio University’s ‘Mita sai’
21-24 November 2014
Visited by some 200.000 people each year, one of the bigger festivals. Enjoy food stalls, recitals, dressed-up people watching, and their impressive dance performance (I participated in it once!).

Sofia University’s ‘Sofia Festival’
1-3 November 2014
This year’s theme: travel. Join Sofia’s students in the festival they’ve worked a year for to produce. With so many food stalls and performances, I’m sure you will not be bored!

Kyoto University Festival
21-24 November 2014
Also here you can find numerous festival food stalls, performances and club activities. If you’re lucky you might meet some cross dressing members of the anime club!

We covered everything that we needed and wanted to using cabs, walking and train. He was also very knowledgeab...

Ryoji was a knowledgable and fun guide. We got lost getting to the starting point but he patiently waited until we found him. Our teenagers were particularly interested in learning about geisha and maiko and Ryogi was able to adapt on the ...

Hiroshi was a thoughtful and experienced guide, with a teaching background, which made him very knowledgeable on the sites. His English was good and he was patient if we asked him to clarify something he said. He also kept us interested with pop quizzes about particular aspects of the sites and rewarded us with very good chocolate bars. Thank you Hiroshi for two fantastic days in Kyoto!

Our experience with Mitsuyuki-san was very good. He was early to pick us up. He new exactly how to get to the places we wanted to see. He found great places for us to have lunch. He ordered a meal that was in the price range that we ordered. When we took more time at the last visit of the day, he did not pressure us to leave, eventhough this meant that he would be working past his designated 8 hou...
