Surround Yourself With Youngsters at the Annual 'Gakusai's

by Mieke - TripleLights travel specialist

All of Japan’s universities and some of its colleges hold gakusai, or students’ festivals, every year in autumn. Most of the after school circles and clubs do presentations (dance and singing performances, poetry recitals, live drawing etc) or have a stand and sell typical Japanese street food, such as ‘okonomiyaki’ (savoury pancake), crepes and much more. If it’s on offer, try my favourite: fried ice!

Some cool ones to visit, with their 2014 dates:

Keio University’s ‘Mita sai’
21-24 November 2014
Visited by some 200.000 people each year, one of the bigger festivals. Enjoy food stalls, recitals, dressed-up people watching, and their impressive dance performance (I participated in it once!).

Sofia University’s ‘Sofia Festival’
1-3 November 2014
This year’s theme: travel. Join Sofia’s students in the festival they’ve worked a year for to produce. With so many food stalls and performances, I’m sure you will not be bored!

Kyoto University Festival
21-24 November 2014
Also here you can find numerous festival food stalls, performances and club activities. If you’re lucky you might meet some cross dressing members of the anime club!

“ Great day in Kyoto ”

Excellent
1 hour ago Traveler: Deborah -   Tour Guide: Toshi

We thoroughly enjoyed our day with Toshi in Kyoto. I sent him a list of the places we were hoping to visit and he arranged an itinerary to fit. He was able to also fit in some places we would not have thought to visit, like the Okochi Sanso garden, which was one of the highlights of the day.

11 hours ago Traveler: Maria -   Tour Guide: Toshiyo

Toshiyo was patient, very knowledgeable, kind, friendly, and considerate. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! We had about 8 main must see places on our list and we saw all, but 1 because of the time constraint (we arrived late from Tokyo). With the complex and multiple modes of transportation between the places we wanted to see, we would’ve never been able to accomplish this without her! It was a particularl...

17 hours ago Traveler: Linda -   Tour Guide: Hiroko

Hiroko and I had been communicating through Triple Lights for a few months before my trip. I took the Shinkansen from Kobe to Kyoto, and recognized Hiroko right away. It was like seeing a long-lost friend! She is warm, generous, speaks perfect English and loves to smile and share her love for Japan. We went to the Torii Gates, to the Kennin-ji temple, the oldest Zen Buddhist temple in Kyoto, w...

“ One day tour of Kyoto ”

Very Good
21 hours ago Traveler: Reenu -   Tour Guide: Mari

Mari was excellent! She was timely and organized and did her best to show us all the sites in Kyoto in one day (9 hours). She was excellent with her communication and provided insight into the sites we were visiting. I really liked the fact that she wanted to make sure everyone was having a good time. The only thing I would recommend for anyone traveling is perhaps limit the number of sites you ar...

2 days ago Traveler: Jean -   Tour Guide: Yuki

We had an amazing day with Mr. Yuki visiting Koyto with specific three locations listed on his guide. We told him what we wanted to see and he planned out the day out perfectly and seamlessLy. He was kind and patience with us since we only had one day to spend in Kyoto. We could not have asked for a better experience. He was very knowledgeable and thorough with the sights went to. Cannot wait to c...

“ Quick Kyoto! ”

Excellent
2 days ago Traveler: CHRISTIE -   Tour Guide: Ahmed

I was fortunately able to book Ahmed at the last minute for a day around Kyoto. It really helped me find my directional sense of the city & it was great to just take everything in visually while he led the way. Otherwise I think I’d still be lost wandering around! We went to a few beautiful temples, window shopped, & finished with a lovely dinner near my hotel in the Gion. Ahmed let me set the...

“ Kyoto Highlights ”

Excellent
2 days ago Traveler: Andrew -   Tour Guide: Richard

As it was the first day of our first visit to Japan it was important that we had a guide who could set the scene for the rest of our short time in the country and Richard really fitted the bill. Our first experience was to negotiate the Shinkansen network as we had arranged to stay overnight in Kyoto, without Richards help we would have wasted precious time. As one of our goals was to understand t...

2 days ago Traveler: Helen -   Tour Guide: Toichi

Toichi went above and beyond. He contacted me several times leading up to the days we spent with him. I have a food allergy. He went out to restaurants ahead of time to locate businesses that could accommodate my special needs. He even sent me pictures of some of the dishes offered. We had a change of heart on our first day, and decided to go to an entirely different part of Kyoto. He was tot...
