Sugamo - Grandma's Cool Shopping Street is Cool for Everyone

Strolling a Local Town Sugamo, Tokyo

One of the gate of Sugamo shoping street

Here is the Sugamo shopping street, nickname is "Grandma's Harajyuku".  Harajyuku is a one of the coolest shopping street for  teenagers.  But here, Sugamo's main target is Grandma & Grandpa.  Even if you are young, still Sugamo shopping street is interesting place.  Feels more local and more close to everyday life in Japan.  I love to visit here!

Sugamo shopping street's official character is call "Sugamon".  The area's name "Sugamo" literally means "nest of duck" or "duck's nest".  So the character is duck.  This photo is a post box with the character "Sugamon".  It's only in this area.

Tram and statin in Sugamo

Sugamo area has tram, small and warm atmosphere.  This tram station has Japanese cafe (Left side of the picture, 1st foor of wite building).  People can hop in the cafe only 3 steps from the tram.  We can enjoy unique scenery, trams running close from the table, with good Japanese sweets and tea.

If you are interested in strolling around here, I'll be happy to show you around!

“ Short but great ”

2 years ago Traveler: Joop -   Tour Guide: MARIKO

We planned Mariko for one day to guide us from out hotel in Tokyo to our Ryokan in Hakone and show us the highlights there. Upon our meeting in the hotel the first thing she had to tell us was the Ryokan in Hakone could not be reached due to the heavy snowfall. She helped us to make new plans for that day. She is very friendly, speaks good English and is a pleasant personality. Thanks Mariko!
