Special tie between Tsuruga in Fukui and Sado

Japanese people cherish the idea of "ご縁”, literally means "tie, link or bond".

This is the Kehi Shrine in Tsuruga, Fukui Prefecture.

There is a small but special tie between this shrine and one of the branch shrines in Sado.

Special tie between Tsuruga in Fukui and Sado

The Kehi Shrine (気比神宮)is famous for this red torii gate, once registered as a National treasure and now an important cultual property.

Along with the Kasuga Taisha Shrine in Nara and the Itsukushima Shrine in Hiroshima,  this torii gate is regarded as one of the three greatest wooden torii gates in Japan.

Second torii and the main building of the Kehi Shrine. Mainly enshrined is the "Izasawake-no-mikoto" , the God of food.

Also another 6 gods are enshrined in this precinct.

This shrine was originally built in 702 as the chief guardian shrine of the Hokuriku region, more than 1300 years ago!

On this explanation board about the torii gate,  you can find kanji "佐渡 - Sado "   in the 10th line from the right.

This is the branch shrine in Sado, also the Kehi Shrine (気比神社).

Special tie between these two shrines

From the explanations of these two boards,  the pillars  of the main torii of  the Kehi Shrine in Tsuruga was brought from the precinct of this branch shrine in Sado about 400 years ago.  And coincidentally,  I am a parishioner of this branch shrine. I had been curious about this explanation and finally could confirm the fact from both sides.

This is trivial but gave me a fresh sense of connection to Tsuruga.

This is the sense of "ご縁” .

Sacred spring water!

In the precinct of the shrine, you can find this spring water, "長命水” or "water of longevity".

Of course, I had a ladle of water! Special tie between Tsuruga in Fukui and Sado

Truruga has a long history, prospered as an important trading port domestically and internationally for a long time.

It's a compact city with varieties of sightseeing spots scattered in it.

Tsuruga is also a gourmet city, offering famous Echizen crab, fresh seafood from the Sea of Japan, Tsuruga ramen and more.

Make sense because the guardian diety of the city is "God of food"!

Easily accessible from big cities like Osaka or Nagoya,  I  recommend you to visit this beautiful city while you are in Japan.

My husband and I are from Hawaii and we hired Fujiko as our guide to visit the ancestral home of our family from Niigata. She far exceeded our expectations and due to her efforts, we actually met a direct relative. Fujiko has a fun and friendly personality and we were immediately impressed by her expertise as a guide. She is very proficient in English and is knowledgeable about Sado Island, ...

Fujiko made our Niigata tour, though only for a day, very memorable. She took the extra mile to grant our request to visit a nearby place which was not included in the itinerary. She has good command of the English language and communicating was a breeze. I highly recommend her if you need a guide in Niigata.

A typhoon was approaching Niigata the day before we were meant to leave on the hydrofoil to Sado. Fujiko-san happened to be in Niigata and we meet and were comforted by her assessment. Took the ferry the next morning under calm conditions and spent a really nice day with Fujiko. Saw the Toki’s, ate great Soba and apples, picked persimmons and figs off a tree. Visited a famous sale brewery that mak...

We were so happy and fortunate to have had Fujiko-san as our guide and Kei-san as our driver in Sado - they truly made our trip special and memorable for our whole family. Typically we don't like guided tours because they are often canned and sterile, but the tour with Fujiko san was the complete opposite--very personalized, unique, and special throughout. Highlights are too numerous to list bu...

“ Tour of Murakami city (near Niigata) ”

Our visit to Murakami city would not have been as enjoyable or efficient without Fujiko's help. When I planned a day trip to Murakami city I knew having a language guide would be helpful, but I thought I could navigate through the small city by myself. After spending the day with Fujiko I learned that I would not have been able to do and see as much had I decided not to retain Fujiko's help. Es...

Fujiko is, quite simply, the best guide we have ever used -- anywhere. She grew up on the island -- and runs a small farm. She knows Sado Island like the back of her hand. She speaks very good English. But, the best part is that Fujiko avoided the tourist traps. She took us to unusual and interesting places - including an impromptu picnic high up in the mountains. That was the highlight of our ent...
