Shibuya 109: Shibuya's Fashion Paradise

by Yuri - TripleLights travel specialist

Shibuya 109, also popularly called "ichi-maru-kyuu" (or "marukyuu" for short) by the locals, is a known fashion shopping centre especially targeted to highly-fashionable and trendy teenagers in Japan. The fashion mall spans 10 floors of the hottest and latest trends for female fashion. Although Shibuya 109 might be considered less appealing to non-teenagers because of the fast changing trends of modern Japanese youth clothing, foreign tourists who want to experience the best of Japanese fashion can often sighted in this Japanese teens fashion hub.

A variety of fashionable clothes of different themes and styles can be found in Shibuya 109, from lolita to gyaru, punk, and more. Most items and clothes are made by Japanese brands, others by less known brands or indies. Top quality should not be much expected, but if you are after that youthful Japanese street look, then you are all good to shop in 109.

From tops, bottoms, dresses, shoes, accessories, make-up, and all the other fashion items you've been thinking about... you will never run out of choices from Shibuya 109.

Another interesting thing about 109 is the way the store clerks and staff members are dressed. Just looking at the sales personnel will give you an idea of what kind of clothes their boutique sells. Things might be a bit chaotic inside though due to the loud music streaming through the speakers of every store, each with a different playlist.

Shibuya 109 is one of those high-rise iconic buildings you will see upon stepping in Shibuya’s grounds, and is already considered as a major tourist attraction in metropolitan Tokyo.

We had an excellent day with Junichi. Despite the fact that it took him quite a few hours to get to us due to the weather conditions he was still on time to meet us at our hotel. Junichi was extremely polite and knowledgeable and we felt we saw and learnt more than we had expected. We shared an enjoyable lunch on Junichi recommendation and he even went out of his way to ensure we were heading in t...

I just finished five days of being guided by Yuko and it was wonderful. I connected with her months ago, letting her know I would be traveling single on my first trip to Japan and that I wanted a guide one on one for five consecutive days. I told her I planned to stay in Tokyo the entire time. I described generally the kinds of sights most interesting to me, including an interest in experiencing a...

Thank you Akira, I told him on many occasions- because I needed to tell him in person and not wait till this review. I could not have picked a better person. In all manners he was punctual. I was happy to have had two good days planned by Akira to include all the places I was interested in seeing around Tokyo. You could do Tokyo on your own but you will not see as much and you don’t need to worry ...

The sumo practice & the Edo museum tour with Mari was well organized, communicated, and executed. Mari & I had a few exchanges, and as we did not want to follow the advertised plan of Sumo practice and the fish market - Mari was flexible and accepted our requests. She provided useful information on the way to the sumo practice and was very helpful at the Edo museum, where English signs were s...

From the moment we met Yumi for our Shinjuku tour, we liked her right away. We found her to be warm, friendly and genuine. She is very approachable and very helpful.
