Are you a 桜前線(cherry-blossom front) chaser?

Excuse me of my bad handwriting, but this photo was taken by my friend a few years ago.

This is "法乗坊の種まき桜”(Hojobo cherry tree) in Osaki, Sado Island.  It is about 300 years old and when this cherry tree

blooms, local farmers used to seed rice in paddy fields.

Doyu split mountain in the distance...

This is Sado Gold Mine.  You can see the wedge-shaped mountain, the symbol of the Sado Gold Mine.

Lines of cherry trees complement that symbolic mountain in mid April.

This is Shiroyama Park in Ogi where "Kodo Earth Celebration" had been held in late August.

We are Hamochi ECC members with Nicole, our teacher.

 Hojobo cherry tree in daytime.

Freshly plowed paddy field becomes a mirror for the cherry tree!

You can see a small thatched cottage near the tree. Actually it's a small temple and local women sometimes gather

to chant Buddhist sutra.

Illuminated cherry trees in Mano Park.  It's a popular place for the islanders to enjoy cherry blossoms.

These lampshades are the reuse of tools used for applying glid lines in paddy fields to plant rice seedlings.

This is Mononobe Shrine in Ogura.

It has a history of more than 1000 years.  The founder of this shrine is said to be an exiled court noble.

On Apr.15,  many people gather to see "鬼太鼓”(demon dance ), a shinto ritual unique to Sado, with 8 demons dance in the community throughout the day accompanied by Japanese drums and flutes to pray for a bountiful harvest in autumn.

* These photos were mostly taken in 2014 and 2015.

Cherry trees are in full bloom in Kanto region including Tokyo now.  But if you are not satisfied with "花見”  in big cities with

skyscrapers, you can still make it in Sado. Cherry flowers started to bloom here and it will be in full bloom in a week!

I hope you enjoy authentic ”花見” somewhere in Japan!

“ Our Visit With Fujiko Was the Highlight of Our Trip! ”

Excellent

My husband and I are from Hawaii and we hired Fujiko as our guide to visit the ancestral home of our family from Niigata. She far exceeded our expectations and due to her efforts, we actually met a direct relative. Fujiko has a fun and friendly personality and we were immediately impressed by her expertise as a guide. She is very proficient in English and is knowledgeable about Sado Island, ...

Fujiko made our Niigata tour, though only for a day, very memorable. She took the extra mile to grant our request to visit a nearby place which was not included in the itinerary. She has good command of the English language and communicating was a breeze. I highly recommend her if you need a guide in Niigata.

A typhoon was approaching Niigata the day before we were meant to leave on the hydrofoil to Sado. Fujiko-san happened to be in Niigata and we meet and were comforted by her assessment. Took the ferry the next morning under calm conditions and spent a really nice day with Fujiko. Saw the Toki’s, ate great Soba and apples, picked persimmons and figs off a tree. Visited a famous sale brewery that mak...

“ Memorable Trip to Sado ”

We were so happy and fortunate to have had Fujiko-san as our guide and Kei-san as our driver in Sado - they truly made our trip special and memorable for our whole family. Typically we don't like guided tours because they are often canned and sterile, but the tour with Fujiko san was the complete opposite--very personalized, unique, and special throughout. Highlights are too numerous to list bu...

We spend amazing four weeks in Japan, but the two trips on Sado Island we did with Fujiko were definitely our highlight. Fujiko did a great job guiding us and spoke excellent English. Apart from being a caring and humorous person one could tell that she really likes being a guide.

“ Tour of Murakami city (near Niigata) ”

Excellent

Our visit to Murakami city would not have been as enjoyable or efficient without Fujiko's help. When I planned a day trip to Murakami city I knew having a language guide would be helpful, but I thought I could navigate through the small city by myself. After spending the day with Fujiko I learned that I would not have been able to do and see as much had I decided not to retain Fujiko's help. Es...

We recently had the pleasure of meeting Fujiko who gave us an awesome tour of Sado Island. Fujiko is, quite simply, the best guide we have ever used -- anywhere. She grew up on the island -- and runs a small farm. She knows Sado Island like the back of her hand. She speaks very good English. But, the best part is that Fujiko avoided the tourist traps. She took us to unusual and interesting places - including an impromptu picnic high up in the mountains. That was the highlight of our ent...
