Sacred trees in Hikawa Shrine in Kawagoe

by Noriko

There are two zelkova trees in Hikawa Shrine in Kawagoe.  These two trees are approximately more than 600 years old.  They stand side by side, just like a good couple.  Japanese people worshiped the mother nature from ancient time, and put a rope to offer prayers to big rocks and trees.

Kawagoe is full of history and culture -- traditional kura-zukuri houses, Kawagoe castle, gorgeous portable shrines used at Kawagoe festival, Kita-in temple that was loved and taken care of by Ieyasu Tokugawa and Iemitsu Tokugawa, famous shoguns in Edo period (from 1603 to 1867).
