   Ronin, 浪人

The original meaning of ronin refers to a samurai who had no master to serve.

In the Edo period, feudal lords were under the control of the Tokugawa feudal government.

The shogunate was so powerful that when feudal lords violated the feudal code,  they were punished by being robbed of their castles and territories.

Each time confiscations occurred by the Tokugawa government, the feudal lord's subordinates were fired at the same time.

Ronin, 浪人

They became jobless people.

Unlike today, there were no social security system in those days.

The discharged samurai immediately had trouble in everyday living.

They were desperate to find a new lord to serve.

Until they were employed, they were in the state of ronin.

   Ronin, 浪人

Today's ronin refers to young people who work very hard after the failure in entrance examination or job hunting.

Masaki could not have worked harder. He took us to all of the places we wanted to see and tailored the itinerary perfectly. He is full of knowledge and good humour. We did not simply see the sights, we learned about the history of Zen Buddhism, meditation practice and breathing and Japanese philosophy. After the tour was over, he sent us over 70 excellent photos that he had taken during the day, w...

Masaki is an excellent guide. Being a previous history teacher, his knowledge allowed us to appreciated the sites much more. While English is his second language, he was understandable. We only had 10 hours during our cruise to see Osaka and the surrounding area, but he catered to the destinations and activities that we wanted in the short amount of time allowed. He also had good and prompt commun...

Masaki made our day in Kyoto very special. From the moment we met he was warm and engaging, and shared his obvious love for Japanese culture and history. He explained the itinerary clearly, and taught us to navigate the Kyoto train and bus system. During each part of his tour he shared his knowledge about not only the places but also the context in Japanese history and culture - particularly th...

I was eager to see lots of Kyoto in the limited time I had there. As a former History teacher, Masaki helped me work out a great itinerary to make the most of my time, prior to my trip. The day of my tour, Masaki arrived promptly and immediately began pointing out places of interest from steps from my Ryokan. Masaki never missed an opportunity to point out the things that were of importance to me,...

Masaki San was explaining very well with a clear and delicate voice: he makes you dive right into the stories as it was a movie ! With the homemade illustrated book that he carries around, you can picture it even more ! He is not only a good guide, but he is also an amazing human being ! Even if the day spent with Masaki San was rainy, he managed to make it sunny :) We recommend him 100% ! ...

Masaki was a wonderful and accommodating guide who was able to put together 2 days of off -the-beaten track adventures to Yuasa and Tsukigase. For us, traveling to a different country means meaningful interactions with locals and their way of life and this was encapsulated in our 2 days with Masaki. He was detailed oriented and meticulous. We couldn’t have asked for a better traveling compani...
