The history of Kumamoto Castle dates back to 1467. Then, fortifications were built by
Ideta Hidenobu. After a series of successors who expanded the fortifications, Katō Kiyomasa
greatly expanded the castle between 1601 and 1607, converting the compound into a
castle complex with 49 turrets, 18 turret gates, and 29 smaller gates. One of the smaller
castle towers had a well and was used as a kitchen by the staff of the nobles residing in the castle.
