Kiyosumi Garden in Koto Ward in Tokyo
Kiyosumi Garden is located in a lowland densely populated residential area of Koto Ward in Tokyo. It originated from a huge mansion of a famous wealthy merchant named Bunzaemon Kinokuniya in the Edo Period(1603-1867), and afterwards the founder of Mitsubishi conglomerates named Yataro Iwasaki bought the property and completed the present design. In 1923, the Great Kanto Earthquake hit the Kanto area including Tokyo. As a result, more than 100,000 people were killed mainly by the following fire. After the earthquake at that time, 20,000 lives of evacuees neighboring to the garden were saved thanks to 4,000 trees there. At a large empty lot 2 km north there, the current Yokoamicho Park where there were few trees, nearly 40,000 people were killed by a fierce firestorm. It is a teaching that a beautiful, wooded area functions not only as a garden but also as an important shelter. The story is to be carried with in my tour. Why don't you join me?
