Nikko is full of stairs

Nikko is full of steep stairs.  This is a picture of Rinnoji Sanbutsudo, which is a temple with Buddhist statues showing the origin of Nikko's religion.   Because renovation is going on,  we can go up to the 7th floor, overlook the construction and have a view of Nikko city, but there is no elevator for it.  You have to climb up and down the stairs.

Taiyuin Mausoleum and Toshogu Shrine also have steep stairs before the gates.   Not barrier free at all.

There is a report of a wheelchair person with a help of a volunteer group visiting Nikko four years ago, which shows some more pictures of the stairs.

Even hiring a private car would be no solution.   The cars would be parked far away from the Shrines and Temples.

You can use the World Heritage Bus and get off at the first stop, Hotel Seikouen Mae and visit the museum, which shows a short movie of the creation and renovation of the Twilight Gate, but to see the actual one, there is no other way but climbing  the stairs.

Yoko was very timely, provided clear agenda for day and kept our family on time to ensure we achieved our tour objectives. She also gave us additional walking tours around neighborhoods after our tea ceremony experience, we enjoyed witnessing what locals do and best snacks to have on a busy walking tour day. Despite our family’s needs and questions for Yoko, she was very patient and tried her best...

“ You need a guide in Tokyo and Yoko is great ”

Excellent
2 weeks ago Traveler: Bill -   Tour Guide: Yoko

The 1st thing to Understand is that Tokyo is huge and you really maximize your time by having a guide taking you to the places you want to see in the most efficient manner. 2nd - English is a very distant 2nd language - so if you can’t speak Japanese you will get frustrated without a guide. 3rd - Japan is very formal and generally speaking reserved. I found Yoko via a search and spent a conside...

We were interested in a cultural and historical overview of Tokyo and Yoko delivered the most delightful day-long private tour. We not only visited temples, shrines, gardens, historical districts and architecture, but Yoko explained the tradition and meaning behind everything we saw. This was primarily a walking tour, but Yoko helped us cover a great deal of territory using the subways. An excepti...

Yoko is very knowledgeable and flexible in her schedule. We were a group of four and she was able to keep the tour interesting. One of the highlights was the tea ceremony, which none of us had experienced before. The night tour of the Rainbow Bridge was also a wonderful sight to see. Riding the metro train during the busiest time of the day was an interesting experience. With Yoko's help, we ...

Yoko was very helpful and informative throughout. She was detailed in how to get tickets ahead of time and where to meet for going to Nikko, she picked an excellent lunchspot and tailored the trip to exactly what I was interested in. She had the timing down perfectly to realistically say what could be seen and then keep us on schedule. In Kamakura she also tailored the trip well and organized t...

“ Kamakura 1 Day Trip ”

Very Good
2 months ago Traveler: Amanda -   Tour Guide: Yoko

My friend and I wanted to do some sightseeing outside of Tokyo during the last couple of days of our trip. After consulting with Yoko, we selected a day trip to Kamakura as Nikko would be too busy during the Kouyo (leaf changing) season. Neither of us had visited Kamakura before, so we were hoping to see some places that we couldn’t see by researching the city online prior to our visit. Yoko-...

4 months ago Traveler: SALIK -   Tour Guide: Yoko

I had a wonderful first full day because Yoko made everything less daunting. I highly recommend her as a private guide as she is fluent in English and knows how to balance visits to culturally enriching sites as well as commercial areas. I would advise everyone to be ready to walk a lot if you want to make the most of this tour.
