Look Prettier Than Ever With Purikura

by Mieke - TripleLights travel specialist

Purikura, usually only 400 yen, takes your picture and the machine does the rest. You can choose if you want extra white or extra tanned (although the extra tanned option is seen less and less frequently due to changing trends), the size of your eyes (super mega large or just super large) the backgrounds and various frames (horizontal or vertical etc). After your pictures are taken, you head on down to the side of the booth where you can start drawing! This requires some practice (or a Japanese speaker), but just pressing buttons randomly also does the trick. Here you can add strange hats, stickers, background images, texts and dates and my personal favourite: lots and lots of shimmer! Groups of boys only are usually not allowed, but when escorted by at least one girl they are fine. Guess that’s the purikura maker’s way of fixing Japanese boys up with a date: “Would you come with me to purikura? I’d go alone but it’s not allowed…” Now who would say no to that?

If you don’t care for a booth, or you want to ‘purikurize’ pictures that you already have, try this Purikura app.

We are very glad we booked our tour with Junko, she was an excellent guide on our first day in Tokyo. She created a customized itinerary based on our interests, and her recommendations turned out to be great. She helped us pack a lot into our day, but not “too much” – really the perfect pace for us. She clearly knew her stuff and had done her research on the sites we visited. The extra informa...

We are a family of three, and we are spending a two-week vacation in Japan. On our first day, Shizuko gave us a perfect introductory tour to Tokyo and Japan. We started at Hamarikyu garden, continued with Asakusa and the Senso-Ji temple, saw the Shibuya crossing, experienced Harajuku, and finished the day at the Meiji Jingu shrine. We had a wonderful tea ceremony in a tea house at Hamarikyu and en...

My family has just completed a whole day’s amazing tour in Tokyo thanks to Arnold. He is punctual, courteous, and knows a lot about local attractions and all sorts of different restaurants. He took us to Tsukiji Outer Market and to the very unique and cute Cat Cafe that kids liked so much! When we had to change our itinerary later in the day as my wife and kids wanted to try kimonos, Arnold waited...
