This five hour itinerary takes you through some of the most traditional sights, including the area in and around the old entertainment streets of Gion. To Kennin-ji Temple, Yasaka Shrine, and finally Nishiki Ichiba Market.

1. Yasaka Shrine

Yasaka Shrine is not only beautiful, but the god of beauty resides here. Drinking sacred spring water is said to gain you beauty, which is why maiko and geisha come to Yasaka Shrine. Beauty water can also be applied to the skin, and praying here is said to grant you the power of a successful life.

One of the five most important temples of Kyoto, Kennin-ji also claims to be the oldest of Kyoto's Zen temples, and the impressive Zen garden reflects this fact. The most impressive sight within the temple buildings is the huge ceiling painting of the Twin Dragons, created in two years by Koizumi Junsaku to mark the 800th year anniversary of Kennin-ji's founding.

A huge market area selling a variety of traditional food, fish, and vegetables. You can try a vast array of unique foods local to Kyoto, along with famous sushi and tempura. The market is great to explore, and the atmosphere throughout the day can be enjoyed over the food itself. Search the market for some interesting examples of Kyoto cuisine, and stop off for a delicious lunch after a day of exploring the old Kyoto streets.

We had an amazing day with Mr. Yuki visiting Koyto with specific three locations listed on his guide. We told him what we wanted to see and he planned out the day out perfectly and seamlessLy. He was kind and patience with us since we only had one day to spend in Kyoto. We could not have asked for a better experience. He was very knowledgeable and thorough with the sights went to. I was fortunately able to book Ahmed at the last minute for a day around Kyoto. It really helped me find my directional sense of the city & it was great to just take everything in visually while he led the way. Otherwise I think I’d still be lost wandering around! We went to a few beautiful temples, window shopped, & finished with a lovely dinner near my hotel in the Gion. Ahmed let me set the...

As it was the first day of our first visit to Japan it was important that we had a guide who could set the scene for the rest of our short time in the country and Richard really fitted the bill. Our first experience was to negotiate the Shinkansen network as we had arranged to stay overnight in Kyoto, without Richards help we would have wasted precious time. As one of our goals was to understand t...

Toichi went above and beyond. He contacted me several times leading up to the days we spent with him. I have a food allergy. He went out to restaurants ahead of time to locate businesses that could accommodate my special needs. He even sent me pictures of some of the dishes offered. We had a change of heart on our first day, and decided to go to an entirely different part of Kyoto. He was tot...

3 days ago Traveler: James -   Tour Guide: Takatoshi

I had a great tour of the several temples and shrines of Kyoto. Takatoshi mostly customized the itinerary so the days were very well organized. He was energetic and knowledgable, with a very warm personality. He was so disarming that when taking my photo, he even got me to openly smile (with my teeth) which I don't usually do! Definitely recommended! Thanks, Takatoshi!
