Kamakura,

by Masaki

Kamakura is a small town on the coast, located about 50km southwest of Tokyo.

 Kamakura,

It was a natural fortress city surrounded by mountains. In the 12 century, the first samurai's government was established here. So it was the center of political power.

The samurai government lasted for 140 years.

Unfortunately, there are only a few famous temples and shrines with their original appearance.

Let's see some of the main attractions.

Tsurugaoka Hachiman Shrine, constructed in the 11th century, was dedicated to the guardian god for warriors. This is related to Minamoto no Yoritomo, the first shogun of the Kamakura shogunate.

Kamakura,

The horseback archery called yabusame is well known throughout Japan. It is held every spring and autumn three times a year.

 Kamakura,

Kotokuin Temple is famous for its great Buddha statue, along with the huge statue of Nara.

The tidal wave in the 15th century washed away almost all the temple buildings except the statue.

The great Buddha hall was completely destroyed. Ever since, the statue has been sitting, exposed to sunlight and cold wind.

Yuigahama beach is within a walking distance from the JR Kamakura station. Every summer the beach is crowded with swimmers such as families with children and young couples.

Masaki is a knowledgeable guide: he informed us a lot about the history of the visited monuments. Also, he is very helpful person: he gave a lot of suggestions how to use our JRpass the most efficient ways during our trip around Japan. He also is very patient with his terrible “guests “ like us because all we are “picturalcolic” persons... His calmness and passion touched our heart... Thank yo...

He invited us to be patient and take our time understanding what we were seeing! As Americans we tend to rush into our day (even on vacation) and try to cover as much as possible we can. This experience was different, looking back, we got a lot more out of our tour and time with him than expected! He was also very flexible with his time and what we wanted to do while in Kyoto!
