Roan Kikunoi

Seasons play a large role in all of the details at restaurant Roan Kikunoi. Although it is common that most of the menus at kaiseki restaurants nationwide are modified according to the four seasons and availability of fresh ingredients during a particular season, Roan Kikunoi goes the extra mile and restyles the restaurant's interior each season to reflect the transition through renewed artwork, flower arrangements and other interior displays.

If you have any special dietary requirements for your meal, the restaurant indicates on their website that you can notify them beforehand and they will make arrangements to ensure that your needs are met.

The course menu is printed in advance (in English) and most staff are qualified to explain the dishes and ingredients utilized to you in English. Reviewers of the restaurant have indicated that the staff even prepare photos of the ingredients from their Encyclopedia, so you can fully be one with the dish presented before you.

The dishes at all of the Kikunoi restaurants throughout Kyoto aim to incorporate modern gastronomic elements with traditional Kaiseki food preparation. Many diners have commented on the non-pretentious atmosphere of Roan Kikunoi but by no means does this compromise the quality of the food served.

Some current items on the Winter menu are as follows:

Sea eal with rice
Kumquat sorbet with fruit jelly
Squid and scallions with miso dressing
Steamed turnips
Steamed sea cucumber and red rice
Nanban style grilled pompano

We visited Kyoto from the port of Kobe while on a cruise of Japan. Kaori met us at the port, and helped us navigate the trains to Kyoto. She was an excellent guide and we wouldn't have been able to see as much without her knowledge of the transportation system. She took us to see the temples and shrines we requested, and was very helpful all day. Lunch was excellent, and our day in Kyoto was a...

Fuhito was able to add tremendous value by sharing the whole story of the many sights we visited. We felt like we were getting the inside scoop as he toured us around.

it is the best decision I have made so far to hire a local guide in Kyoto. We have seen so much in 6 hours with Toshiyo. The private tour is informative and Toshiyo is very patient and answered all our questions. It is a must if you are in Kyoto for a limited time. We went to places via bus and I cannot imagine doing this effectively by ourselves. Thank you Toshiyo!
