Just 10 minutes from Hakata station, you can find Gokusho district, a condensed area of old temples.
Many people expect Fukuoka new things such as shopping, culinary experiences and modern buildings. It's very exciting though, Fukuoka has another aspect, too. Let's look at old traditional atmosphere of Gokusho district.
Start with Jotenji temple. It is a zen temple built more than 800 years ago by priest called Shoichi. He was like a hero for local people because he originated Yamakasa festival, one of the great festival in Fukuoka. The temple ground is divided into two parts by an approach with a newly built gate called Senenmon. Along with a beautifully-maintained sand garden, you can feel the tranquility you never imagine in the business district nearby.
